Various funding sources exist in the lab including NIH, NIA, Cure Alzheimer’s fund, Alzheimer’s association, BrightFocus Foundation. I’ve also successful applied to the Illinois Department of Public Health for early career researcher funding.
Tell us a little about yourself:
I am a post-doctoral scholar at the University of Chicago with 7 years of research experience in the molecular, cellular and biochemical study of human disease including Alzheimer’s disease and hypercholesterolemia. I completed undergraduate and post-graduate degrees at Newcastle University, Leeds University and the University of Manchester. My research goal is to use my experience of basic scientific research to contribute towards the advancement of potential disease modifying therapeutics. In spare time I enjoy travelling to the many US National Parks, competing in triathlons and playing guitar.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself:
I finished 24th in the North-Central US (15 states) regional triathlon championships in 2018.
Why did you choose to work in dementia?
My grandfather was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease as I was finishing my undergraduate degree. At the time it seemed like there was very little interest from industry in tackling the problem and I thought going into Alzheimer’s disease research in academia was a great way to contribute to the understanding of this terrible disease.
