EquaDem research internships are a unique opportunity for Health and Social Care Professionals, Third Sector staff, and Local Authority Representatives to develop their research skills and capacity. These internships support individuals to carry out a supervised research project over a period of up to 12 months, with release from their usual work duties for up to one day per week.
Who Can Apply?
Applicants do not need to have formal research training. The programme welcomes individuals at all levels, including those with no prior experience. However, successful applicants will demonstrate:
- A strong interest in research
- Commitment to the full programme, including delivering a presentation at the end of the internship
- Full managerial support from their employer
- Availability to attend supervisory meetings and training sessions
Applications are also welcome from joint applicants working collaboratively on a shared project.
About the Internship
Each intern will work with experienced researchers from one of the participating EquaDem Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and receive support throughout their project. Interns are required to develop and submit their own research idea, which should align with the priorities of their employing organisation.
All internship projects must reflect EquaDem’s key principles:
- Co-production with people with lived experience or service users
- A clear focus on addressing inequalities
When shaping the health inequality aspects of their project, applicants should refer to the Focus On Research and Equity (FOR EQUITY) web-based platform.
What’s Included
Interns will receive:
- Supervision from two EquaDem core members
- Access to online training modules to build research skills
- Opportunities to attend EquaDem events and workshops
- Support to share research outcomes via blogs, webpages, or other platforms
- A chance to present at the annual EquaDem Conference
Funding Support
To enable participation, salary backfill will be provided to the intern’s employing organisation. This includes:
- Up to £5,000 for salary backfill (80% funded by EquaDem, 20% by the host organisation)
- Up to £500 for research-related costs (e.g., public involvement, transcription, co-production), also on an 80/20 funding basis
