Profile – Dr Alys Griffiths, The University of Sheffield

Dr Alys Griffiths

Name:

Dr Alys Griffiths

Job Title:

Senior Research Fellow

Place of work / study:

The University of Sheffield

Area of Research:

Care and support for people with dementia, MND or other long-term health conditions.

How is your work funded:

NIHR and Alzheimer’s Society

Tell us a little about yourself:

I’ve been working in dementia research for over a decade, and have recently started also working in MND research. I live in Leeds and have a rescue dog called Bronwen.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself:

I once accidentally ordered a meal that was just an entire plate of green peppers in somebody’s back yard restaurant in North Macedonia.

Why did you choose to work in dementia:

I have a grandmother living with dementia and wanted to understand more about what her life might be like, as I saw my family having to adapt to a situation we really knew nothing about. The majority of my family worked in healthcare when I grew up and I knew I wanted to work in that sector somehow! When I was doing my PhD and enjoyed being in care homes so much, that narrowed my search slightly.

What single piece of advice would you give to an early career researcher?

Celebrate the highs and lows with coffee & cake – grant submissions, paper rejections, conference presentations and everything in between!

What book are you reading right now? Would you recommend it?

Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros, the second Fourth Wing book – everyone should read it immediately!
