Consent & Ethics in Dementia Research

27/03/2024 @ 2:00 am - 4:00 am

the university of melbourne logo

This webinar aims to demystify steps involved in the ethics application process for conducting research studies involving people living with dementia as participants.

Our speakers will share helpful knowledge and experience about adaptations to research participant documentation, recruitment and consent processes, and examples of how people with lived and living experience of dementia can be involved in ethics review processes. This can help increase opportunities for people with living experience of dementia to participate in research, should they wish to do so. This webinar is not focused on co-design principles, it is about preparing an ethics application that supports participation of people living with dementia, through involvement of people with lived experience.

A broad range of topics are covered, such as navigating informed consent processes (including alternative approaches), involving people with living/lived experience of dementia or dementia care in the ethics review application process (e.g. reviewing protocol/proposal, communication materials with participants, interview guides, questionnaires), and using platforms such as StepUp for Dementia Research for recruitment.

Speakers

Dr Marianne Coleman and Natalie Ive – Case study: Involving people with dementia and carers in your ethics review application
Prof Yun-Hee Jeon – Top tips when using the StepUp for Dementia Research database
A/Prof Margaret MacAndrew – Modified consent and ethics in dementia research
Mr Chris Rose’Meyer – HREC review of applications to conduct research involving people with dementia as participants
