Introduction to CRISPR

11/07/2022 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Generic Events Image

This talk will introduce the audience to CRISPR-Cas proteins, focusing on their application in the fight against diseases and why they are now indispensable as a researching tool. It will specifically explore how we use these proteins, covering experimental models of diseases, control of gene expression and diagnosis of viruses and other pathogens. The advantages and disadvantages of the different Cas proteins will also be discussed as well as the things to consider before starting working with CRISPR as a practical ‘how to’ guide.

Dr Elisa Aguilar-Martinez

Dr Elisa Aguilar-Martinez, University of Manchester

Dr Elisa Aguilar-Martinez earned her Ph.D. in Molecular Biology at the University of Sheffield. After completing her Ph.D., Elisa worked with Professor Andrew Sharrocks studying the role of post-translational modifications in gene expression. Currently, she is working at the Genome Editing Unit at the University of Manchester. Elisa routinely uses CRISPR to generate knock-out and knock-in cell lines as well as regulate gene expression at the transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels. Elisa has also applied CRISPR proteins for diagnose of pathogens and genetic diseases.
