A weekly webinar to discuss careers and research topics. These sessions combine livestreams, guest speakers and group online chat to exchange ideas, challenge, influence, inspire and educate.

In this session we talk about Dealing with Perfectionism.

Dealing with perfectionism is a critical issue for early career researchers, in this session, we will explore the underlying causes of perfectionist tendencies and their implications for research. How can you differentiate between striving for excellence and setting unattainable standards? What strategies can you adopt to mitigate the negative effects of perfectionism on your work and personal life? We will discuss practical approaches to fostering a healthier mindset, prioritising progress over perfection, and embracing the iterative nature of research. This session aims to facilitate an open dialogue with our expert speakers, and allowing participants to share their experiences and strategies for managing perfectionism in their academic journeys.

Speakers

Dr Jodi Barnard completed her PhD in 2024 at King’s College London, and she is now a Senior Scientific Content Writer for Supereme Optimization. With a background in neuroscience research, and experience in both the healthcare and IoT industry, she has experienced neurodegeneration through nursing, researching and project managing collaborative projects across academia and industry partners. Through her PhD perfectionism was a hot topic, and somthing she has experiened and can share her insights on.

Rebecca Williams is PhD student at the University of Cambridge. Rebecca completed her undergraduate and masters at the University of Oxford before joining University of Cambridge for her doctorate researching Frontotemporal dementia and Apathy.

Programme

The format of the event is a 30 minute livestream where the speakers will each present their thoughts on this topic for 10 minutes each, the host will then ask questions and the livestream will end. The speakers will then join the online chat and interact with the audience, answering questions and giving those who attended a chance to share their thoughts on the topic.
