Translational dementia research from epidemiology to public health

Dr Sebastian Köhler, Associate Professor of Neuroepidemiology, School for Mental Health and Neuroscience, Maastricht University, NL.
Dr. Köhler leads the research line ‘Risk and Prevention’ of the Alzheimer Centre Limburg at Maastricht University. Seb studies risk and preventive factors for cognitive decline and dementia in the general and clinical populations in order to inform universal as well as selected and indicated prevention programs. His group conducts observational, experimental and implementation studies, and collaborates within national and international consortia, and with private and societal partners. Seb and his group developed the LIBRA score, the MijnBreincoach app, and the awareness campaign ‘We zijn zelf het medicijn’ (We are the medicine ourselves), which have all been successfully implemented in other national and international initiatives to improve brain health. He is also the co-PI of FINGER-NL, the Dutch version of the Finish FINGER trial.

Preventing or delaying dementia onset is a public health priority, but it requires definition of target groups and tailored strategies for prevention. In this seminar, Seb will talk about the development of the “LIfestyle for BRAin Health” (LIBRA) index and the “MyBraincoach” app, both aimed at capturing lifestyle-related dementia risk and identifying individual room-for-improvement. A public health campaign in the Netherlands called “We are the medicine ourselves” implementing these measures is currently adopted across the country. In addition, Seb will present the outline of the FINGER-NL randomized controlled trial, which was launched earlier this year as part of the World Wide Fingers initiative.
