SUMMARY:Annual Canadian Conference on Epigenetics
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the 11th Annual Canadian Conference on Epigenetics!  \nThe Canadian Epigenetics\, Environment and Health Research Consortium (CEEHRC) is pleased to host the 11th Canadian Conference on Epigenetics from November 12 to 15\, 2025. The meeting will take place at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity in the spectacular Canadian Rockies\, approximately 1.5 hours from Calgary. This conference is intended to bring together a critical mass of epigenetics researchers\, along with key international leaders in the field\, to engage in cross-disciplinary dialogue on recent advancements in the field of epigenomics. \nThis year\, we will welcome over 200 national and international epigenetics researchers to share their research and to engage in dialogue on the current state of epigenetics research. Our scientific program includes distinguished invited speakers in the fields of epigenetics and epigenomics covering topics including epigenomic measurements at both the bulk and single cell level\, mechanisms of epigenetic regulation\, chromatin organization and epigenetic dysfunction in disease. These topics will be covered over 11 sessions that include keynote and plenary lectures and 2 poster sessions. We encourage interaction and networking between epigenetic researchers across career stages while providing a respectful environment that stimulates scientific debate and catalyzes new collaborations. \nRegister to Attend

SUMMARY:Coping styles & help seeking in dementia research: DETERMIND
DESCRIPTION:“What can coping styles tell us about help seeking in dementia? Findings from DETERMIND” Presented by Isaac Duncan-Cross \nIsaac Duncan-Cross is nearing the end of his PhD at the University of Sussex under the supervision of Dr Eleanor Miles and Dr Ben Hicks\, focussed on affect regulation and help seeking in people with dementia. His research takes place in collaboration with the DETERMIND Project\, a national research initiative focussed on tackling dementia care inequalities in the UK. \nIsaac will present the mixed-method findings of his PhD research\, looking at the relationship between coping and formal service use in dementia. He will present coping styles as a novel predictor of diagnostic timing in dementia\, performing above and beyond pre-established sociodemographic predictors. He will also discuss both coping and help seeking post-diagnosis\, as experienced by people with dementia themselves. \nRegister to Attend

DESCRIPTION:Is Artificial Intelligence (AI) widening inequalities in research and care or helping to reduce them? Join Dr Isabel Castanho & Dr Eleanor Conole for a live debate on 12 Nov at 8pm and vote on the motion. \n\nDebate Motion: \nThis House believes that AI is furthering disparities in research and care.\n\nAs artificial intelligence becomes more integrated into healthcare and research\, it brings opportunities for innovation in diagnosis\, treatment\, and data management. At the same time\, its use raises important questions about fairness\, representation\, and access. This debate will explore whether AI is helping to reduce disparities\, or whether it risks reinforcing existing ones. \n\nSpeaker For the Motion:\nDr Isabel Castanho is an Instructor at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center\, Harvard Medical School. Her research investigates protective mechanisms in Alzheimer’s and related neurodegenerative diseases\, using single‑cell and spatial transcriptomics to explore cognitive resilience. She completed her PhD in epigenomics of Alzheimer’s disease at the University of Exeter\, and transitioned from bench lab work to computational biology\, leading to promoted role in 2024. \nSpeaker Against the Motion:\nDr Eleanor Conole is a Junior Research Fellow in Applied AI at the University of Oxford\, affiliated with the Department of Biochemistry. Her research explores the links between inflammation\, brain ageing\, and cognitive decline\, building on her previous work with the Lothian Birth Cohorts at the University of Edinburgh. She holds a PhD in Neuroscience funded by the Wellcome Trust. \n\nWhat to Expect\nJoin us for a live online debate where our speakers will present opposing views on the continued relevance of animal models in dementia research.
