SUMMARY:Essential Guide to Grant Applications
DESCRIPTION:The EGGA 2026 masterclass will take place on Tuesday 19th\, Wednesday 20th and Thursday 21st May 2026. \nEGGA will be held on Zoom. Register for EGGA on our Zoom portal here. \nOur Essential Guide to Grant Applications (EGGA) is a free-to-attend\, online\, three-day masterclass\, funded and hosted by NIHR RSS USP\, on how to write a grant application for applied health or social care research that is strong from a methodological point of view\, reads well and presents a convincing case for funding. The event will cover important writing tips\, along with guidance on what reviewers will be looking for in an application. Attendees will learn how to make their research idea clear and compelling to reviewers\, how to write a good methods section and how to demonstrate credible support. \nThe online masterclass focuses on how to sell your research idea by: \n\nwriting a convincing application with a good structure\, flow and argument;\npresenting a strong methods section\, including statistical\, qualitative\, health economics and Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) elements;\nhaving a good project plan;\nengaging with sources of external support for your research.\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat’s the format?\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEGGA is held online. Content is delivered through: \n\nPresentations\nPanel discussions\nQ&A sessions\nOptional homework\, worksheets and exercises\n\n\n\n\n\nWho should attend?\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEGGA is open to all healthcare professionals\, social care and public health practitioners\, health researchers and SMEs who intend to apply to an open\, competitive\, peer-reviewed funding programme in the 12 months following the masterclass. Attendees are welcome internationally\, but the content will be geared towards UK-based funding systems. The Research Support Service is part of the NIHR; although the content of EGGA is relevant for anyone applying for health or social care funding\, it will be most relevant for those submitting to NIHR funding streams. \n\n\n\n\nWhat topics are covered?\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresentations and practical sessions will cover the following topics (and more): \n\nGetting your message across to reviewers quickly and clearly\nSales pitch and writing style\nCommunicating the importance of your work\nWhat do funding panels love and hate to see in applications?\nThe importance of the research question\, title\, aims and objectives\nThe importance of Plain English summaries\nShowing reviewers you can deliver: the importance of a good case for support\nExpectations and common mistakes in the case for support\nHow to present statistics sections\nHow to present health economics sections\nHow to present qualitative sections\nReassuring reviewers\nShowing reviewers you can deliver: demonstrating credible support\nThe importance of good Patient and Public Involvement\nThe importance of good project management\nDemonstrating the potential for tangible outputs\nThe importance of a good pre-submission review\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen does EGGA take place?\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEGGA takes place annually\, usually in the Spring Term. The event will run across three consecutive days from 9am to 4pm on each day. SUMMARY:Webinar - Autism and young onset dementia
DESCRIPTION:The Young Dementia Network webinar on Tuesday 19th May 2026 at 12.30-1.30pm will explore the experiences of autistic people when accessing dementia healthcare\, highlighting some of the barriers they may encounter and the importance of making services more accessible and inclusive. \nIt will outline the work being undertaken at Dementia UK to develop clear\, accessible information and resources for both the autistic community and healthcare professionals\, with the aim of improving understanding\, communication and support. \nIt will also examine the complex relationship between autism and young onset dementia. In particular\, it will consider how certain characteristics commonly associated with autism\, such as differences in communication\, behaviour and sensory processing\, may sometimes be misunderstood or misattributed as signs of young onset dementia. We will discuss how these overlaps can contribute to confusion in assessment and diagnosis\, and why greater awareness among healthcare professionals is essential. \nPresenters at the webinar include Ryan Gray\, Research Assistant at Dementia UK\, who leads on the young onset dementia strand of its 2023-2026 strategy and Gavin Stewart PhD\, a senior postdoctoral research fellow at King’s College London. Gavin is an expert in autism and ageing and his research takes a multifaceted approach to explore the life experiences of autistic people across adulthood and as they age. \nLou shares her lived experience as an autistic carer for her mum with dementia\, her difficulties in navigating services and her Mum’s transition into a care home. \n\nRegister
