SUMMARY:Research Showcase - Wearable Technology in Depression and Dementia
DESCRIPTION:What can wearable technology tell us about the everyday experiences of older people living with depression or dementia? Could continuously collected data reveal changes that conventional clinical assessments miss? \nThis livestream is part of the Dementia Researcher weekly Showcase series. Each week we host a 45 minute online session bringing researchers together to share their work\, methods\, and ideas. \nIn this session\, Dr Ta-Wei Guu will explore how wearable technologies can be used to better understand behavioural patterns\, sleep disturbances\, and responses to treatment in older people experiencing depression and dementia. \nThe session will consider how data collected outside traditional clinical settings could provide a more continuous picture of changes in behaviour and health over time. Ta-Wei will also discuss plans to develop a technology-enabled longitudinal cohort\, using wearable technology to study ageing populations and investigate how patterns observed over months and years might inform future research and clinical practice. \nDr Ta-Wei Guu is a Consultant Psychiatrist and Assistant Professor based at CMUBH in Taiwan\, with an affiliation to the Institute of Psychiatry\, Psychology & Neuroscience at King’s College London. His work brings together psychiatry\, ageing research\, and digital technologies to explore new approaches to understanding mental health and dementia in later life. \nAttendees can expect a practical and research focused session with time for questions and discussion. \n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Young onset dementia care within mental health wards
DESCRIPTION:People with young onset dementia are disproportionately represented within mental health inpatient services\, yet support for these people on mental health wards remains one of the least understood areas of dementia care. \nThe Young Dementia Network webinar on Wednesday 21st October 2026 at 12.30-1.30pm will be led by Emma Wolverson\, Professor of Ageing and Dementia at the Geller Institute of Ageing and Memory\, University of West London. She will provide a unique insight into who is admitted into mental health wards\, what leads up to their admission\, the aims of admission\, how long younger people with dementia typically stay\, and what happens when they leave. \nDrawing on findings from the FIND ME study\, the presenters will introduce practical co-produced resources designed to support people living with dementia and family members when admission is being considered. \nThe webinar will also feature first-hand accounts from a family carer and a member of ward staff\, offering honest reflections on the challenges\, opportunities and realities of care within these settings for people with young onset dementia. \nTo register\, please visit the website: The care of people with young onset dementia within mental health wards – Young Dementia Network \n\nRegister
