SUMMARY:EFAR Conference on the Biology of Aging
DESCRIPTION:The first Conference of the European Federation for Aging Research will bring together researchers from across Europe and beyond to discuss the biological processes that shape ageing\, longevity and age-related disease. \nTaking place in Cologne\, the conference aims to encourage scientific exchange\, strengthen collaboration between Europe’s ageing research communities and support early career researchers entering the field. \nAbout the conference\nThe European Federation for Aging Research was established by the German Society for Aging Research\, the Dutch Society for Research on Ageing\, Nordic Aging and the British Society for Research on Ageing. \nEFAR aims to connect researchers across Europe\, promote ageing research\, support the development of younger scientists and encourage policies that strengthen the field. Further national ageing research societies are also expected to join the federation. \nFor dementia and neurodegeneration researchers\, the meeting may be particularly relevant to those investigating the biological mechanisms that connect ageing with cognitive decline\, cellular dysfunction and age-related disease. \nProgramme\nThe scientific programme will include six main conference sessions featuring invited speakers and presentations selected from submitted abstracts. \nThe conference will open on Wednesday 14 October\, followed by two scientific sessions and an evening poster session with food and refreshments. Thursday will include three further scientific sessions and an EFAR members’ meeting. The final session will take place on Friday morning\, followed by concluding remarks and the presentation of poster prizes. \nEarly career researchers were particularly encouraged to submit abstracts for talks and posters. Each week we host a 45 minute online session bringing researchers together to share their work\, methods\, and ideas. \nIn this session\, Dr Lily Cheng will present her research using computational modelling\, multimodal neuroimaging\, and biomarkers to investigate the biological diversity of brain ageing and Alzheimer’s disease. She will introduce SuperBigFLICA\, a semi-supervised multimodal data fusion framework that integrates amyloid PET\, tau PET\, grey matter density\, cortical thickness\, and pial surface area to identify patterns shared across imaging modalities. \nThe session will explore how these multimodal brain imaging patterns relate to cognition and neuropsychiatric symptoms\, while also discussing the opportunities and challenges of interpreting complex data fusion approaches in dementia research. \nLily Cheng is a Research Fellow at McLean Hospital in Belmont\, Massachusetts. DESCRIPTION:What can studying the brain after death reveal that conventional brain scans cannot? And could connecting highly detailed imaging directly with neuropathology help us develop better biomarkers for dementia? \nThis livestream is part of the Dementia Researcher weekly Showcase series. Each week we host a 45 minute online session bringing researchers together to share their work\, methods\, and ideas. \nIn this session\, Dr Pulkit Khandelwal will present his research using high-resolution multimodal postmortem imaging to investigate structural changes across Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. His work uses ultra-high-resolution MRI of human brain tissue alongside computational methods to examine features including cortical thickness\, regional brain volume\, and structural change. \nBy linking these imaging measurements directly with neuropathological markers including tau\, TDP-43\, α-synuclein\, neuronal loss\, and gliosis\, Pulkit’s research aims to identify structural signatures associated with specific disease processes. This approach could help bridge the gap between conventional neuroimaging and gold-standard histopathology and support the development of more precise imaging biomarkers. \nPulkit is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. DESCRIPTION:The Methodologies Workstream of the Multiple Long-Term Conditions (MLTC) Cross-NIHR Collaboration is running a day of online training on improving equity and inclusion in health research\, on Friday 16 October 2026 from 0915 to 1500. \nThe training will consider inequities in the design and conduct of health research\, with examples of involving people living with multiple long-term conditions (MLTC). DESCRIPTION:The Medical Research Council (MRC) is running a free online webinar on Tuesday 20 October 2026\, 2:00pm to 3:15pm (UK time)\, looking at how public partnerships shape strong research and what that looks like inside a funded application. \nMRC encourages its research community to involve people in helping to inform and improve research wherever that brings benefit to the research and to society. If you are thinking about applying for funding and want to get patient and public involvement right from the start\, this session offers a view from both the funder and a successful team. \nWhat the webinar covers\nThe session opens with an introduction to the MRC Centre of Research Excellence (MRC CoRE) model\, and why MRC uses maturity levels to assess public partnerships. \nPanel perspective: the vital role of public partnerships\nProfessor Marcus Munafò\, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost\, University of Bath \nCase study: inside a successful MRC CoRE application\nProfessor Peter Magill\, Director\, and team from the MRC Centre of Research Excellence in Restorative Neural Dynamics\, which is developing device-based treatments for brain conditions including Parkinson’s and dementia. \nPresentations are followed by questions to the panel. \nWho should attend\nThe webinar is aimed at researchers and at public involvement and engagement professionals. DESCRIPTION:What can wearable technology tell us about the everyday experiences of older people living with depression or dementia? Could continuously collected data reveal changes that conventional clinical assessments miss? \nThis livestream is part of the Dementia Researcher weekly Showcase series. Each week we host a 45 minute online session bringing researchers together to share their work\, methods\, and ideas. \nIn this session\, Dr Ta-Wei Guu will explore how wearable technologies can be used to better understand behavioural patterns\, sleep disturbances\, and responses to treatment in older people experiencing depression and dementia. \nThe session will consider how data collected outside traditional clinical settings could provide a more continuous picture of changes in behaviour and health over time. Ta-Wei will also discuss plans to develop a technology-enabled longitudinal cohort\, using wearable technology to study ageing populations and investigate how patterns observed over months and years might inform future research and clinical practice. \nDr Ta-Wei Guu is a Consultant Psychiatrist and Assistant Professor based at CMUBH in Taiwan\, with an affiliation to the Institute of Psychiatry\, Psychology & Neuroscience at King’s College London. SUMMARY:Young onset dementia care within mental health wards
DESCRIPTION:People with young onset dementia are disproportionately represented within mental health inpatient services\, yet support for these people on mental health wards remains one of the least understood areas of dementia care. \nThe Young Dementia Network webinar on Wednesday 21st October 2026 at 12.30-1.30pm will be led by Emma Wolverson\, Professor of Ageing and Dementia at the Geller Institute of Ageing and Memory\, University of West London. Each week we host a 45 minute online session bringing researchers together to share their work\, methods and ideas. \nIn this session\, Dr Maria Drummond will present work from Embedding Technology in Care Homes: Progress towards Digital Maturity (ETECH-DM)\, a 30-month mixed-methods study examining digital maturity in care homes across the UK. \nMaria will explore how technology is currently being used in everyday care home life\, the barriers and enablers influencing digital development\, and how technology could support person-centred care\, staff wellbeing and service delivery. Each week we host a 45 minute online session bringing researchers together to share their work\, methods and ideas. \nIn this session\, Mason McLeod will present their PhD research exploring how engagement with organised outdoor activities shapes perceptions of wellbeing among people living with dementia in the Scottish Highlands. \nUsing Participatory Action Research (PAR)\, Mason places people living with dementia at the heart of their research. They work with a Lived Experience Advisory Panel to guide the project\, ensuring that the voices\, experiences and priorities of people with dementia inform how the research is designed and conducted. \nMason will also discuss their work with two organisations providing structured outdoor activities for people living with dementia. Through in-depth qualitative research\, these settings will form comparative case studies examining how participation in outdoor activities can influence wellbeing and the experience of living with dementia within rural communities. \nMason is a PhD student at the Centre for Rural Health Sciences at the University of the Highlands and Islands. Their research brings together dementia\, rural health\, outdoor activity and participatory approaches to explore wellbeing while championing the right of people living with dementia to be actively involved in research. \nAttendees can expect a practical and research focused session with time for questions and discussion. \n\nRegister

The day runs from 10:00 to 16:45 and is followed by a reception. \nIt is hosted by the Genetic Therapy Accelerator Centre\, set up in 2022 as a joint initiative between UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology and the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health\, and directed by Professor Francesco Muntoni. The centre develops RNA\, AAV and cellular myology therapies for neurological and neuromuscular disorders\, with Professor Jo Ng leading the AAV team. \nFor anyone working on the genetics of neurodegeneration\, this is a chance to see how vector work moves from bench to clinic inside one institution. Join us in-person 9:30-17:00 on Monday 23rd November 2026 at the Health Foundation\, Central London. This is a unique opportunity to explore the latest advancements in ageing-related research and connect with fellow researchers within the UKARFF community. This event co-organised by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC)\, Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)\, Health Foundation and Vivensa Foundation. \nPlease note: By completing this registration process you are registering your interest to attend. SUMMARY:Qualitative Methods for Understanding Diverse Lives
DESCRIPTION:In this one-day online training workshop you will be introduced to four qualitative research methods to better understand diverse lives – Photo Go-Alongs\, Collage\, Life History Interviews and Participant Packs. When researching social groups\, researchers may focus on categories such as age\, gender\, sexuality and so on. These categories can turn catch-all terms into catch-all agendas. \nTreating groups of people with one shared characteristic as homogenous risks a cookie-cutter approach which overlooks diverse lives and needs. Given the complexity of what it means to be a person\, a one-size fits all approach to engagement cannot suffice. The methods introduced in this training workshop are beneficial in exploring diverse lives and can be used when researching with any group. \nThe session is aimed at PhD students and academics of all career stages across the UK who want to better understand: \n\nThe specific place-based needs of people\nThe everyday practices of people\nThe world from participants’ perspectives\nHow to work with people in an inclusive and accessible way\n\nThis online training workshop will be structured as follows:   \n\nIntroductions\nOrigins and Approach\nMethods deep dive:\n\nPhoto Go-Alongs\nParticipant packs\nCollage\nLife Histories\nWorkshops\n\n\nLearnings and close\n\nBy the end of the course participants will: \n\nBe able to think critically about how creative\, participatory methods might be incorporated into their research and/ or teaching.\nHave broadened their understanding of research methods from tools of data collection to techniques for capacity building.\nHave workshopped four qualitative methods for creatively engaging with people (Photo Go-Alongs\, Collage\, Life Histories and Participant packs).\n\nThis online training workshop will take place over the course of 1 day on Wednesday 11th March 2026 between 10:00 and 16:00\, with 1 hour for lunch between 12:30 and 13:30. \nCost: \nThe fee per teaching day is: £60 per day for registered students. £150 per day for staff at academic institutions\, Research Councils researchers\, public sector staff\, staff at registered charity organisations and recognised research institutions. £350 per day for all other participants. \nIn the event of cancellation by the delegate a full refund of the course fee is available up to two weeks prior to the course. No refunds are available after this date. \nIf it is no longer possible to run a course due to circumstances beyond its control\, NCRM reserves the right to cancel the course at its sole discretion at any time prior to the event. DESCRIPTION:In this one-day online training workshop you will be introduced to four qualitative research methods to better understand diverse lives – Photo Go-Alongs\, Collage\, Life History Interviews and Participant Packs. When researching social groups\, researchers may focus on categories such as age\, gender\, sexuality and so on. These categories can turn catch-all terms into catch-all agendas. Treating groups of people with one shared characteristic as homogenous risks a cookie-cutter approach which overlooks diverse lives and needs. Given the complexity of what it means to be a person\, a one-size fits all approach to engagement cannot suffice.
