SUMMARY:35th Alzheimer Europe Conference
DESCRIPTION:We are very happy to invite you to the 35th Alzheimer Europe Conference (35AEC)\, which will be organised in Bologna from 6 to 8 October 2025\, in collaboration between Alzheimer Europe\, Federazione Alzheimer Italia and Alzheimer Uniti Italia. \nAfter our successful Conference in Milan in 1995\, this will be the second time that an Alzheimer Europe Conference is organised in Italy and the conference motto this year will be “Connecting science and communities: The future of dementia care”. \nThese are exciting and interesting times for the European dementia movement with research on new treatments and improved diagnostics making progress. In parallel\, we see a greater focus on making our societies more dementia-inclusive and ensuring that the views and voices of people with dementia are fully included in care\, policy and research. \nWe therefore hope that 35AEC will be another great networking opportunity\, bringing together people living with dementia and their families\, carers and supporters\, but also volunteers and staff of Alzheimer associations\, policy makers\, health and social care professionals\, researchers\, academics and industry representatives from all over Europe and beyond. Alzheimer Europe conferences are truly unique\, attracting representatives with hugely varied backgrounds and nationalities and we are sure that our Bologna conference will continue this trend. \nTogether with our colleagues from Alzheimer Uniti Italia and Federazione Alzheimer Italia\, we will make sure to also develop a particularly interesting programme for our Italian colleagues. All plenary sessions\, as well as all sessions organised in the main conference hall will be translated into Italian. An additional two parallel session slots have been reserved for the sessions\, workshops and symposia organised by our two Italian co-hosts. SUMMARY:The Lived Experience and Researcher Network (LEARN)
DESCRIPTION:MND Scotland is once again hosting free\, interactive\, and educational local events focused on motor neuron disease research. The Lived Experience and Researcher Network (LEARN)\, organised by Scotland’s MND charity\, brings together people affected by motor neuron disease (MND) and local MND researchers. \nLEARN launched in 2023 when people with MND were invited to take tours of researchers’ laboratories and provide useful feedback to improve engagement events for people with MND and researchers. \nIn 2024\, 102 people attended four LEARN events in Aberdeen\, Dundee\, Edinburgh and Glasgow. \nThis year\, MND Scotland’s research team will be returning to Glasgow\, Aberdeen\, Edinburgh\, Dundee\, and an additional new location in Dingwall\, Scottish Highlands\, to help build relationships between researchers and people affected by MND and allow them to share knowledge and experiences. \nThe events will take place in football stadiums across the country thanks to the support from: Celtic FC\, Aberdeen FC\, Ross County Football Club\, Dundee United F.C.\, and Heart of Midlothian. \nOn the day\, attendees can expect to hear presentations from MND researchers; take part in open discussions with MND researchers and people affected by MND; participate in sessions facilitated to build relationships between attendees and researchers; and have opportunities to learn about current MND research. \nMotor neuron disease (MND) is a rapidly progressing terminal neurological illness\, which stops signals from the brain reaching the muscles. MND Scotland is the only charity in Scotland dedicated to directly supporting people living with motor neuron disease and their families and friends. \nThere are around 480 people in Scotland currently living with MND. SUMMARY:New Challenges to Research Integrity
DESCRIPTION:A BGS webinar on what you should know about research integrity in the current landscape. The seminar will be relevant to anyone who reads medical journal articles\, either as a researcher or clinician.  \n8 October 2025\, 12:30 – 14:00 \n\n\n\n\nThis webinar will cover clinical trials\, and other types of studies relevant to medicine. It will cover hot topics and new issues such as the use of generative AI in research and the proliferation of ‘paper mills’\, predatory journals and companies offering ‘authorship for sale’. During the 90 minutes it will give examples of how to spot issues with research integrity in published papers and what Age & Ageing Journal does to try to ensure we only publish research that is genuine and valid. \nWhy attend?\nAround 2% of researchers admit to having previously falsified or fabricated data\, though this is widely believed to be an underestimate. Some estimate as much as a third of the published literature may be tainted by questionable research practices. This represents an existential threat to evidence-based medicine\, with the potential to cause real harm to patients. It is important clinicians and researchers are aware of new and old threats to research integrity so we can make better informed decisions on the evidence base for our everyday practice. \nWho should join:\n\nAll professionals providing healthcare to older people and all medical researchers conducting and publishing of research of clinical trials\n\nAims:\n\nImprove attendees’ knowledge  of the current research landscape and challenges\nDevelop skills to identify research of concern\nShare focused best practice and the latest in research integrity\n\nProf Alison Avenell is an Honorary Consultant in Clinical Biochemistry\, NHS Grampian. Her research at the University of Aberdeen involves undertaking large randomised controlled trials and systematic reviews relevant to clinical care. DESCRIPTION:Centre for Dementia Seminar: “Connecting Psychosis and Dementia: Shared Brain Signatures”: Presented by Lisa Hahn via Teams\, Postdoctoral Researcher\, Precision Psychiatry Lab\, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) Hospital\, Munich\, Germany. \nLisa Hahn completed her PhD at the Research Centre Jülich under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Jürgen Dukart\, focusing on neuroimaging and behavioural biomarkers in neuropsychiatric disorders\, including postpartum depression and behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia. Since 2022\, she has been a postdoctoral researcher in the Precision Psychiatry Lab led by Prof. Nikolaos Koutsouleris\, where her work focuses on mechanism-informed machine learning for neuropsychiatric diseases. \nLisa will present work from Professor Nikolaos Koutsouleris examining links between frontotemporal dementia and psychosis. DESCRIPTION:This Young Dementia Network webinar will introduce a resource that has been co-produced to improve social workers’ understanding of young onset dementia\, so that they are in a better position to respond effectively to those living with or supporting someone with the condition. \nSocial care includes support to help someone to live their life as fully as possible and maintain independence\, dignity and control. Social workers are a key group\, with a role in carrying out assessments of what people living with dementia and their carers need and advising on care plans to meet those needs. However\, most social workers have little experience with young onset dementia and may not be aware of the way it affects people’s lives. One carer told us she had to advise the social worker\, rather than the social worker being able to advise her. \nIn this webinar\, Julie\, a former social worker who lives with young onset dementia\, will talk about her experiences of social care and the potential for improvement. DESCRIPTION:Join us at the House of Lords for an in-person launch of the APPLE-TREE* dementia prevention study. \nHosted by Baroness Ritchie of Downpatrick\, the event will share the study’s results and feature an expert panel discussing why dementia prevention matters more than ever. \nPanelists include: \n\nProfessor Fiona Carragher\, Chief Policy and Research Officer\, Alzheimer’s Society\nProfessor Mark Caulfield\, Professor of Clinical Pharmacology and Precision Medicine at Queen Mary University.\nDr Jeremy Isaacs\, National Clinical Director for Dementia at the NHS\n\nAs the UK ages\, it is vital to invest in prevention for age-related diseases such as dementia. SUMMARY:Continuity of care in UK general practice
DESCRIPTION:Continuity of care means patients seeing the same GP over time to develop a personal and trusting relationship. Good continuity of care is known to be better for patients’ health\, but has been declining in the UK. \nWhen someone wants to see a GP\, they contact their practice and ask for an appointment. This can be done in different ways\, and these are called the ‘access systems’ in a general practice. \nRecently\, there have been lots of changes to access systems\, due to the high demand for appointments. However\, patients say it is still very difficult to book an appointment with a GP they know. There has been very little research on how these different access systems have affected continuity of care. \nIn this research conversation\, Hannah Mahoney will talk about her study to find out how continuity of care and access systems are linked. \nIn her study\, staff working in General Practice will measure the level of continuity of care being delivered in their practice. They will also complete a questionnaire about the access systems used in their practice. We will review the data and describe any links we find and will then interview some staff members to get more detailed information. \nWe hope this information will help us understand how we can improve continuity of care in the UK. All participants will get feedback on how their data compares to other practices\, which they can use to improve their care. \nOur speaker\nHannah Mahoney is an Academic Clinical Fellow in General Practice\, in the Centre for Academic Primary Care at the University of Bristol. This means she spends half of her time training to be a GP and half of her time doing research. \nShe is interested in continuity of care because she thinks it is one of the most important and valuable things about being a GP. DESCRIPTION:White matter in focus: exploring the role of myelin and oligodendrocytes in neurodegeneration \nThere is increasing interest in the role of cells of the oligodendrocyte lineage in neurodegenerative conditions. While oligodendrocytes have been primarily studied in the context of demyelinating disorders such as multiple sclerosis\, this is changing with an increasing awareness of their roles in metabolic support\, immune response and synaptic function. Concurrently\, our understanding of the importance of oligodendrocyte dysfunction in a range of neurodegenerative disorders including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease has also matured. \nThe goal of this meeting is to connect researchers and industry stakeholders with interests in multiple sclerosis\, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases with a focus on the function and dysfunction of the oligodendrocyte lineage in neurodegeneration. By facilitating networking\, sharing of knowledge\, resources and methods we hope to accelerate translation in the field. \nSupporting organisations:\nThis symposium is being organized jointly by members of the Cambridge Dementia Research Institute\, the ALBORADA Drug Discovery Institute and the Cambridge Centre for Myelin repair \nSymposium structure \nThis symposium will include two keynote speakers with outstanding contributions to oligodendrocyte research and neurodegeneration\, namely Klaus Nave\, director of the Max Planck institute for Multidisciplinary Sciences\, and Siddharthan Chandran\, director of the UK Dementia Research Institute. SUMMARY:The Lived Experience and Researcher Network (LEARN)
DESCRIPTION:MND Scotland is once again hosting free\, interactive\, and educational local events focused on motor neuron disease research. The Lived Experience and Researcher Network (LEARN)\, organised by Scotland’s MND charity\, brings together people affected by motor neuron disease (MND) and local MND researchers. \nLEARN launched in 2023 when people with MND were invited to take tours of researchers’ laboratories and provide useful feedback to improve engagement events for people with MND and researchers. \nIn 2024\, 102 people attended four LEARN events in Aberdeen\, Dundee\, Edinburgh and Glasgow. \nThis year\, MND Scotland’s research team will be returning to Glasgow\, Aberdeen\, Edinburgh\, Dundee\, and an additional new location in Dingwall\, Scottish Highlands\, to help build relationships between researchers and people affected by MND and allow them to share knowledge and experiences. \nThe events will take place in football stadiums across the country thanks to the support from: Celtic FC\, Aberdeen FC\, Ross County Football Club\, Dundee United F.C.\, and Heart of Midlothian. \nOn the day\, attendees can expect to hear presentations from MND researchers; take part in open discussions with MND researchers and people affected by MND; participate in sessions facilitated to build relationships between attendees and researchers; and have opportunities to learn about current MND research. \nMotor neuron disease (MND) is a rapidly progressing terminal neurological illness\, which stops signals from the brain reaching the muscles. MND Scotland is the only charity in Scotland dedicated to directly supporting people living with motor neuron disease and their families and friends. \nThere are around 480 people in Scotland currently living with MND. DESCRIPTION:The Research Methods Rendezvous (RMR) is a unique opportunity to explore puzzles\, ideas and questions\, and begin to transform them into research that is important\, feasible and impactful. \nThe RMR is a free\, innovative\, online initiative designed to be a source of inspiration\, a research incubator and a networking opportunity. Based on two half-day intensive sessions in autumn 2025\, the RMR explores two parts of the research process: \n\nI wonder: the curiosity that sparks our research (10 September)\nHow can we: the process of shaping those sparks into tangible projects (29 October)\n\nBetween the sessions\, a seven-week collaboration period enables participants to co-shape the development of ideas. Applications to participate are open until Wednesday\, 2 July 2025. \nRead more about the event below or download a PDF of the full call for participation. \nStructure of the rendezvous\nRendezvous One: I wonder…\n10 September 2025 \nRendezvous One concerns ideation\, the ideas we have as we start to generate our research projects. These come from unfinished questions\, empirical observations\, theoretical intrigues or methodological curiosities. Attendees will get the chance to hear lightning talks from researchers outlining these early-stage ideas. \nView the programme for Rendezvous One \nThe researchers presenting their ideas were selected by NCRM following a contributor application process earlier in 2025. All speakers are active researchers sharing their own early-stage work. \nThe interregnum\n11 September to 28 October 2025 \nDuring this period\, the ideas from Rendezvous One will be developed into sessions for Rendezvous Two. Discussion boards will be hosted on the RMR online platform for each idea presented. \nParticipants will be invited to contribute thoughts\, resources and suggestions. With the contributor’s approval\, you may also have the opportunity to take a more active role\, potentially joining a team developing a Rendezvous Two session. \nRendezvous Two: how can we…\n29 October 2025 \nRendezvous Two concerns how we turn our wonderings into researchable questions. Through 80-minute parallel workshops\, contributors and participants will discuss or co-develop ideas\, exploring methods and next steps\, whether that be developing bid applications\, forming networks or submitting paper proposals. \nFormat for Rendezvous Two\nSessions will typically follow one of the formats below. However\, alternative format suggestions are welcomed. \n\nSpeakers’ corner: Where an individual presenter may want to outline the possibilities of how they can develop their research curiosity into something workable.\nOn the sofa with: Where a session has more than one presenter and aims to generate possibilities through discussion\, with space for audience participation or a Q and A at the end.\nKitchen table: Open to variation in format but a standard approach would be a talk by one or more people and then the chair opens a discussion.\nIn the studio: This can be more creative in design\, but may involve several participants who co-design an event (perhaps using creative methods) to get attendees to join in.\n\nAll sessions in Rendezvous Two will be 80 minutes in length. Sessions will be developed during the interregnum and will be listed on the programme page when details are confirmed. \nLogistics\nThis is a free\, online event. \nWe will be using Whova to host the rendezvous. This is a dedicated online event platform that allows for networking\, polls\, gamification and one-to-one meetings.
