SUMMARY:Imaging Alzheimer's Before Symptoms Emerge
DESCRIPTION:We find ourselves in an exciting time in Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) research. As a result of longitudinal studies revealing amyloid and tau dynamics\, we now have disease-modifying treatments demonstrating cognitive benefit in early symptomatic individuals. There may be even more benefit if these therapies could be administered earlier\, before cognitive impairment.  \nMedical imaging plays a pivotal role in understanding the disease during this presymptomatic period when cognitive changes are subtle and difficult to detect. It’s important to stay current on the latest research about how these biomarkers are changing: both in terms of when (stage of the disease) and where (affected areas in the brain) and how these findings could impact your clinical development programs. \nIn this webinar\, Perceptive’s Professor David Cash will present how novel imaging and trial designs are improving accessibility and precision in presymptomatic AD research\, including: \n– How changes in amyloid burden\, tau deposition and atrophy can be detected during the presymptomatic phase of AD\n– How ultra low-field MRI and rapid MRI techniques can increase accessibility to imaging both in clinical research and in clinical trials\n– How new trial designs are needed to define relevant treatment effects in presymptomatic AD \nJoin us to learn how imaging biomarkers can detect Alzheimer’s decades before symptoms\, supporting earlier intervention and innovative trial designs. \n\nRegister to Attend

DESCRIPTION:We are very happy to invite you to the 35th Alzheimer Europe Conference (35AEC)\, which will be organised in Bologna from 6 to 8 October 2025\, in collaboration between Alzheimer Europe\, Federazione Alzheimer Italia and Alzheimer Uniti Italia. \nAfter our successful Conference in Milan in 1995\, this will be the second time that an Alzheimer Europe Conference is organised in Italy and the conference motto this year will be “Connecting science and communities: The future of dementia care”. \nThese are exciting and interesting times for the European dementia movement with research on new treatments and improved diagnostics making progress. In parallel\, we see a greater focus on making our societies more dementia-inclusive and ensuring that the views and voices of people with dementia are fully included in care\, policy and research. \nWe therefore hope that 35AEC will be another great networking opportunity\, bringing together people living with dementia and their families\, carers and supporters\, but also volunteers and staff of Alzheimer associations\, policy makers\, health and social care professionals\, researchers\, academics and industry representatives from all over Europe and beyond. Alzheimer Europe conferences are truly unique\, attracting representatives with hugely varied backgrounds and nationalities and we are sure that our Bologna conference will continue this trend. \nTogether with our colleagues from Alzheimer Uniti Italia and Federazione Alzheimer Italia\, we will make sure to also develop a particularly interesting programme for our Italian colleagues. All plenary sessions\, as well as all sessions organised in the main conference hall will be translated into Italian. An additional two parallel session slots have been reserved for the sessions\, workshops and symposia organised by our two Italian co-hosts. This year’s programme should therefore be particularly appealing to both English and Italian speakers. \nWe invite you to share your research\, projects\, activities and experience via our call for abstracts\, so that we can develop an exciting\, interesting and varied programme for all participants wishing to learn more about the latest developments and opportunities in dementia care\, treatment\, management\, research and policy. \nWe hope that your participation in this year’s Alzheimer Europe Conference will be a fantastic experience and that you will get the most out of our exciting and innovative programme and range of networking opportunities\, whilst also discovering the amazing city of Bologna. \nAs organisers\, we are deeply grateful to all our sponsors\, for supporting the activities of Alzheimer Europe and this Annual Conference in particular. SUMMARY:The Lived Experience and Researcher Network (LEARN)
DESCRIPTION:MND Scotland is once again hosting free\, interactive\, and educational local events focused on motor neuron disease research. The Lived Experience and Researcher Network (LEARN)\, organised by Scotland’s MND charity\, brings together people affected by motor neuron disease (MND) and local MND researchers. \nLEARN launched in 2023 when people with MND were invited to take tours of researchers’ laboratories and provide useful feedback to improve engagement events for people with MND and researchers. \nIn 2024\, 102 people attended four LEARN events in Aberdeen\, Dundee\, Edinburgh and Glasgow. \nThis year\, MND Scotland’s research team will be returning to Glasgow\, Aberdeen\, Edinburgh\, Dundee\, and an additional new location in Dingwall\, Scottish Highlands\, to help build relationships between researchers and people affected by MND and allow them to share knowledge and experiences. \nThe events will take place in football stadiums across the country thanks to the support from: Celtic FC\, Aberdeen FC\, Ross County Football Club\, Dundee United F.C.\, and Heart of Midlothian. \nOn the day\, attendees can expect to hear presentations from MND researchers; take part in open discussions with MND researchers and people affected by MND; participate in sessions facilitated to build relationships between attendees and researchers; and have opportunities to learn about current MND research. \nMotor neuron disease (MND) is a rapidly progressing terminal neurological illness\, which stops signals from the brain reaching the muscles. MND Scotland is the only charity in Scotland dedicated to directly supporting people living with motor neuron disease and their families and friends. \nThere are around 480 people in Scotland currently living with MND. There is no cure or meaningful treatments. \nMND Scotland supports the idea that the input and viewpoints of those with lived experience are vital to help guide research. \nKen McEwen and his wife Lesley attended the LEARN Aberdeen event in 2024: \nThe informative and engaging events will explore the latest developments in MND research for those affected by motor neuron disease and hopes to build relationships between those with lived experience and researchers to make sure that research reflects the needs of people with or affected by MND. \nMND Scotland invites those interested in this research learning event to hear more about their contribution in the fight against MND. \nEvent details (including information about parking\, accessibility\, and how to register) can be found here: \n\nThursday 11 September 2025\, 2pm-5pm\, Celtic Park\, Glasgow https://mndscotland.org.uk/events/learn-glasgow/\nTuesday 23 September 2025\, 2pm-5pm\, Pittodrie Stadium\, Aberdeen https://mndscotland.org.uk/events/learn-aberdeen\nTuesday 7 October 2025\, 2pm-5pm\, Tynecastle Park\, Edinburgh https://mndscotland.org.uk/events/learn-edinburgh\nWednesday 22 October 2025\, 2pm-5pm\, Tannadice Park\, Dundee https://mndscotland.org.uk/events/learn-dundee\nThursday 30 October 2025\, 2pm-5pm\, Ross County\, Dingwall: https://mndscotland.org.uk/events/learn-dingwall\n\nThe online registration link can also be access here: https://forms.office.com/e/WS8VUJLYFz \nFor more information about MND Scotland\, please visit: www.mndscotland.org.uk\, email: info@mndscotland.org.uk\, or call: 0141 332 3903.

SUMMARY:New Challenges to Research Integrity
DESCRIPTION:A BGS webinar on what you should know about research integrity in the current landscape. The seminar will be relevant to anyone who reads medical journal articles\, either as a researcher or clinician.  \n8 October 2025\, 12:30 – 14:00 \n\n\n\n\nThis webinar will cover clinical trials\, and other types of studies relevant to medicine. It will cover hot topics and new issues such as the use of generative AI in research and the proliferation of ‘paper mills’\, predatory journals and companies offering ‘authorship for sale’. During the 90 minutes it will give examples of how to spot issues with research integrity in published papers and what Age & Ageing Journal does to try to ensure we only publish research that is genuine and valid. \nWhy attend?\nAround 2% of researchers admit to having previously falsified or fabricated data\, though this is widely believed to be an underestimate. Some estimate as much as a third of the published literature may be tainted by questionable research practices. This represents an existential threat to evidence-based medicine\, with the potential to cause real harm to patients. It is important clinicians and researchers are aware of new and old threats to research integrity so we can make better informed decisions on the evidence base for our everyday practice. \nWho should join:\n\nAll professionals providing healthcare to older people and all medical researchers conducting and publishing of research of clinical trials\n\nAims:\n\nImprove attendees’ knowledge  of the current research landscape and challenges\nDevelop skills to identify research of concern\nShare focused best practice and the latest in research integrity\n\nProf Alison Avenell is an Honorary Consultant in Clinical Biochemistry\, NHS Grampian. Her research at the University of Aberdeen involves undertaking large randomised controlled trials and systematic reviews relevant to clinical care. Alison has helped develop statistical methods and a checklist to assess publication research integrity\, because fraudulent trials are rapidly increasing: \nCheck for publication integrity before misconduct \nMedicine is plagued by untrustworthy clinical trials. How many studies are faked or flawed? \n\nRegister to Attend

SUMMARY:Catch-up - Salon Debate - Animal Models in Dementia Research
DESCRIPTION:Are animal models still useful in dementia research? Join Professor Michael Coleman and Dr Loukia Katsouri for a live debate on 15 Oct at 12pm and have your say in the vote. \n\nDebate Motion: \nThis House believes that animal models have outlived their usefulness in dementia research.\n\nFor decades\, animal models\, particularly genetically modified mice\, have been central to dementia research. But with growing concerns around translational failures\, ethics\, and advances in human-based models\, is it time to move on? Or do animal models still hold essential value in understanding disease mechanisms and testing treatments? \n\nSpeaker For the Motion:\nProfessor Michael Coleman is the van Geest Professor of Neuroscience in the Department of Clinical Neurosciences\, University of Cambridge. Michael leads a team that comprises exceptional researchers from around the world\, who work across a variety of disciplines in a highly collaborative environment. His research sits at the interface between basic and clinical neuroscience\, translating advances in axon and synapse protection to treat and prevent neurodegenerative diseases. \nSpeaker Against the Motion:\nDr Loukia Katsouri is a Senior Research Fellow at University College London’s Sainsbury Wellcome Centre. Her research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of tau propagation in Alzheimer’s disease\, combining molecular\, pharmacological and behavioural approaches to understand how tau drives disease spread\, neuronal death and cognitive decline. \n\nWhat to Expect\nJoin us for a live online debate where our speakers will present opposing views on the continued relevance of animal models in dementia research. The session will include: \n\n10-minute opening statements from each speaker\nModerated discussion\nAudience Q&A\nLive vote before and after the debate to see if opinions shift\n\nWhether you’re firmly for\, firmly against\, or somewhere in between\, come along and be part of the conversation. \n\n\nWatch the Recording

SUMMARY:Webinar - Social care for young onset dementia: raising social workers’ awareness
DESCRIPTION:This Young Dementia Network webinar will introduce a resource that has been co-produced to improve social workers’ understanding of young onset dementia\, so that they are in a better position to respond effectively to those living with or supporting someone with the condition. \nSocial care includes support to help someone to live their life as fully as possible and maintain independence\, dignity and control. Social workers are a key group\, with a role in carrying out assessments of what people living with dementia and their carers need and advising on care plans to meet those needs. However\, most social workers have little experience with young onset dementia and may not be aware of the way it affects people’s lives. One carer told us she had to advise the social worker\, rather than the social worker being able to advise her. \nIn this webinar\, Julie\, a former social worker who lives with young onset dementia\, will talk about her experiences of social care and the potential for improvement. Professor Jan Oyebode from the University of Bradford will provide findings from the DYNAMIC project on social workers’ awareness and experiences with young onset dementia. \nThe webinar will cover the process of co-production and the resulting co-produced resource\, designed to help raise social workers’ awareness of the needs of people living with young onset dementia. \nRegister to Attend

SUMMARY:Introduction to Wellcome Open Research
DESCRIPTION:This session will introduce the open publishing and peer review model used by Wellcome Open Research\, including advice for first-time authors.  \nWellcome Open Research is a fully Open Access publishing platform that can be used by all Wellcome Trust funded projects and researchers to openly disseminate research outputs. Submissions to Wellcome Open Research are subject to editorial checks that ensure the robustness\, quality\, and transparency of the underlying research. Following these checks\, articles are published Open Access before peer review\, so that they can be viewed and cited as quickly as possible. Expert reviewers are then selected and invited\, and their reports and names are published alongside the article\, post-publication. \nThis webinar will include a presentation on the publication requirements for Wellcome Open Research\, and the submission\, revision\, and post-publication open peer review workflows. We will provide advice for authors on how to ensure that submissions meet the requirements for open publishing\, and how to engage with the revision and peer review process that follows. You will also have the opportunity to hear from a Wellcome Open Research author about their experience of using the platform to publish their research. There will be a Q&A and the session will be recorded for registrants who are unable to attend live. \n\nRegister
