SUMMARY:Human Amyloid Imaging Conference 2027
DESCRIPTION:The Human Amyloid Imaging Conference (HAI) returns\, this year it comes to the Puerto Rico Convention Center in San Juan from 13 to 15 January 2027 for its 19th meeting\, and abstract submission is open until Friday 23 October 2026. \nHAI is the leading meeting for researchers working on amyloid and tau PET imaging\, fluid biomarkers\, neuropathology and the computational methods that link them. It runs as a single-track\, in-person meeting\, with posters displayed centrally so everyone sees the same science\, which makes it a friendlier conference than most for early career researchers to be seen. \nThis year’s keynote speakers are Peter Nelson (University of Kentucky)\, Rema Raman (University of Southern California) and Mattia Veronese (University of Padova). \nWhat’s covered\nThe programme is organised around three themes: \n\nTechnical and methods\, covering how imaging is measured\nClinical\, covering what imaging reveals about people\, disease progression and treatment\nNeuropathology\n\nCross-cutting areas include fluid biomarkers\, AI and computational approaches\, and clinical trials and therapeutic development. With blood tests for p-tau217 moving into practice and biomarkers now central to dementia trials\, the meeting sits right where much of the field’s attention is. \nSubmit an abstract\nAbstracts close on Friday 23 October 2026. Investigators at all career stages can submit\, and trainees and early career researchers are especially encouraged. Work must be original and not previously presented at HAI\, and preliminary or in-progress work is welcome as long as the scientific question is clear. \nAbstracts are limited to 300 words\, excluding title and authors\, and should be structured as background\, methods\, results and conclusion. You choose a primary theme (technical/methods\, clinical or neuropathology) and can flag cross-cutting areas. Each abstract is scored independently by five Program Committee members on scientific merit alone. Decisions are due in late November\, and presenters must confirm by 2 December 2026. \nShort on time? Our guide on how to write a powerful conference abstract will help. \nTravel scholarships and awards\nGraduate students and postdocs who submit an abstract can apply for an HAI Travel Scholarship\, which can cover flights\, hotel and/or registration. The application is part of the abstract form\, there are no geographic restrictions\, and women and minorities are strongly encouraged to apply. \nHigh-scoring presenters are also in the running for two $500 Young Investigator Awards (one podium\, one poster)\, and for AAIC/ISTAART Fellowships for one graduate student and one postdoc\, which include full AAIC registration\, return airfare and five nights’ hotel. \nRegistration\nHAI 2027 is in person only. Early rates run until 2 December 2026: $175 for postdocs and students\, $400 for academic\, government and non-profit delegates\, and $800 for non-sponsor industry and private practice. Prices rise in December and again in January\, and registration may close once the meeting reaches capacity. \nSubmit your abstract by Friday 23 October 2026. \n\nSubmit an Abstract

SUMMARY:Rethinking Neurodegeneration
DESCRIPTION:This conference focuses on new perspectives on neurodegeneration and dementia\, including the question of whether diseases such as Alzheimer’s may represent interconnected pathological processes rather than clearly distinct disorders. Researchers from across the field will meet in Hanover to discuss current research. \nNeurodegenerative diseases and dementia are a dramatic burden for our aging societies. While the age-associated demise of neurons leading to dementia has been intensively studied for decades\, the individual causes of degeneration are not fully understood. Consequently\, causative therapies or a cure are still missing. \n\n\nAlthough dementia-associated diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and Frontotemporal Dementia exhibit substantial heterogeneity at multiple levels – including genetics and affected brain regions – an increasing number of shared mechanistic pathways are being identified. These findings raise the possibility that “dementia” may represent a continuum of pathological processes rather than a collection of distinct disease entities. For instance\, most Alzheimer’s disease cases are currently described as mixed pathologies\, as they involve the deposition of several proteins that are found in various types of neurodegenerative disorders; examples are the deposition of amyloid beta\, tau\, alpha-synuclein\, or TDP-43. \nThe Herrenhausen Conference “Rethinking Neurodegeneration – Challenging established paradigms and exploring new paths” aims to address these complexities from a broad and interdisciplinary perspective. It will provide an unbiased perspective on neurodegeneration\, the multifactorial risk factors\, and aging from the standpoint of molecular and cellular biology as well as human genetics\, epidemiology\, and clinical research. It will bring together experts in neurodegeneration\, dementia and aging research to present their perspectives\, creating a unique opportunity for new and unprecedented synergies. Moreover\, this conference aims to move beyond the beaten paths encouraging broader perspectives and outside-the-box thinking\, potentially driving a paradigm shift. Given that neurodegeneration and dementia are multifactorial and age-associated conditions\, they need to be explored accordingly. \nThe conference also includes contributions from early career researchers and encourages young scientists to broaden their perspectives on long-standing medical challenges. \nIn many ways\, “Rethinking Neurodegeneration – Challenging established paradigms and exploring new paths” reflects the spirit of the famous quote attributed to Max Planck: “When you change the way you look at things\, the things you look at change”. \n\n\n\n\n\nTravel grants for early career researchers\nWe award up to 10 travel grants to PhD-/MD-students and postdoctoral researchers. The grants are intended to support early career researchers whose work relates to the scientific themes of the conference and who wish to actively contribute to the interdisciplinary exchange on neurodegeneration and dementia research. Applications will be evaluated based on scientific quality\, originality\, relevance to the conference topics\, and the potential contribution to interdisciplinary discussion. \n\nThe deadline for applications is September 30\, 2026. All applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application mid October 2026. \nFor details\, please see the document Call HK Neurodegeneration Travel Grants (PDF) \n\nTravel Grants Application \n\nConfirmed Speakers\n\nYou can find all confirmed speakers in the downloadable document. \n\nConfirmed Speakers \n\nRegistration\n\nThere is no attendance fee\, but prior registration is mandatory. \nRegistration will open at the end of July 2026. The number of participants is strictly limited and attendance is subject to selection by the organisers. The registration deadline is November 1\, 2026. Your attendance will be confirmed by mid November 2026. \n\nRegistration link for participants

SUMMARY:Mouse models for human disease workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Mouse models for human disease workshop addresses one of the key challenges in modern biomedical research: ensuring genetically altered (GA) mouse models are used appropriately\, rigorously\, and reproducibly. \nDesigned for researchers with a basic understanding of mouse genetics\, it provides practical guidance on experimental design\, model selection\, breeding strategies\, and troubleshooting to help maximise the scientific value of GA mouse studies. \nMaking the Most of Genetically Altered Mouse Models\nGenetically altered mouse models are powerful tools for investigating gene function and disease mechanisms\, but their successful use requires careful planning and a clear understanding of the factors that can influence experimental outcomes. This workshop explores the critical variables to consider when designing studies\, including the selection of appropriate experimental and control groups\, the importance of genetic background\, and how strain choice can affect the interpretation and reproducibility of results. \nParticipants will gain an overview of the methods used to generate genetically altered mouse lines and learn which aspects of model generation are most important to understand when planning experiments or developing breeding strategies. The workshop also covers the essential quality control checks that should be completed before a new line is introduced into a research programme. \nA significant focus of the workshop is conditional mouse models and the technologies that underpin them\, including the Cre-Lox system and alternative recombinase platforms such as Flp\, Dre\, and Vika. These sophisticated systems allow researchers to manipulate gene expression in specific tissues or at defined time points\, enabling biological questions to be addressed that cannot be investigated using conventional constitutive knockout models. However\, their complexity also introduces opportunities for error and misinterpretation. Drawing on real-world examples\, we will examine common pitfalls associated with conditional models\, discuss how they arise\, and identify practical strategies to minimise their impact on experimental outcomes. \nThe workshop also provides guidance on sourcing and importing mouse models from repositories and collaborators. Participants will learn how to identify suitable strains\, assess available quality control information\, and avoid common issues that can arise when introducing new lines into an existing colony. \nAs genetic research becomes increasingly sophisticated\, the use of multiple alleles and complex breeding schemes is becoming routine. We will discuss how to design efficient breeding programmes\, generate appropriate controls\, minimise animal use where possible\, and ensure that important breeding-related variables are not overlooked. Particular attention will be given to factors that can affect reproducibility long before animals enter an experimental cohort. \nIn addition\, the workshop addresses common challenges encountered when managing genetically altered colonies\, including troubleshooting breeding problems and determining the next steps when a model does not behave as anticipated. Participants are encouraged to bring examples from their own research\, creating opportunities for discussion and collaborative problem-solving. \nLearning Outcomes\nBy the end of the workshop\, participants will be able to: \n\nIdentify the critical variables that influence experiments using genetically altered mice.\nSelect appropriate strains\, experimental groups\, and controls.\nUnderstand how genetically altered mouse lines are generated and validated.\nRecognise the strengths and limitations of conditional genetic systems.\nAssess the quality and suitability of mouse models obtained from repositories.\nDesign effective breeding strategies for complex genetic models.\nIdentify factors that influence reproducibility and experimental interpretation.\nTroubleshoot common colony management and experimental challenges.\n\nWho Should Attend?\nThis workshop is intended for researchers\, PhD students\, technical staff\, and colony managers who are using – or planning to use – genetically altered mouse models and who already have a foundational understanding of mouse genetics. It will be particularly valuable for those seeking to improve the robustness\, reproducibility\, and efficiency of their in vivo research programmes. \nPricing\nThere is a range of pricing options available to suit your needs: \n\n£2\,325 includes four nights’ accommodation (Monday to Thursday)\, transport to the Advance Training Centre\, lunch and refreshments throughout the week and a workshop evening meal\n£2\,420 includes five nights’ accommodation (Sunday to Thursday)\, transport to the Advance Training Centre\, lunch and refreshments throughout the week and a workshop evening meal\n£1\,355 lunch and refreshments throughout the week and a workshop evening meal (no accommodation or transport)\n\nCorporate sponsorship\nCorporate Sponsorship of the Mouse Models for Human Disease Workshop is available. SUMMARY:Nanopore London Calling 2027
DESCRIPTION:Oxford Nanopore’s annual conference\, London Calling\, returns to Old Billingsgate in London from 18 to 20 May 2027\, and abstract submission is now open. \nLondon Calling brings together researchers using Oxford Nanopore sequencing to share new methods\, data analysis and real-world applications across science and healthcare. The programme mixes keynotes\, community talks\, interactive and discussion-led sessions\, masterclasses and posters. Tuesday 18 May is a virtual-only day\, while Wednesday 19 and Thursday 20 May run live at Old Billingsgate with online participation too. \nIt is worth a look for dementia and neurodegeneration researchers. Long-read sequencing is increasingly used to pick up repeat expansions\, structural variants\, RNA isoforms and DNA methylation that short-read approaches can miss\, and to explore brain gene activity in Alzheimer’s. \nWhat’s on\nAlongside the main programme\, breakout sessions are organised around real application areas\, with small\, focused discussions. Last year’s Tech Hub covered data analysis\, clinical research applications\, high-throughput sequencing\, experimental design\, and sample and library preparation\, and drop-in Technical Zones focused on adaptive sampling\, transcriptomics and whole-genome sequencing. In person\, the Live Lounge offers hands-on time with the devices and one-to-one conversations with Oxford Nanopore’s experts. \nSubmit an abstract\nAbstract submission for London Calling 2027 is open until Friday 15 January 2027 at 23:59 UK time. Decisions will be sent to all applicants by the end of March 2027\, and details on how to take part\, including any available travel support\, will be shared with successful applicants. \nIf you are pulling one together\, our guide on how to write a powerful conference abstract is a good place to start\, and if you end up with a poster\, here’s how to sell your conference poster on the day. \nQuestions about abstracts go to the events team at events@nanoporetech.com. \nTickets\nVirtual tickets are free. In-person and online tickets for 2027 are due to go on sale soon. For reference\, in-person tickets for 2026 started at £499 on early bird\, with a student rate of £349\, and sold out. \nSubmit your abstract by Friday 15 January 2027 (23:59 UK time). \n\nSubmit an Abstract

SUMMARY:SCMND 2027: Stem Cell Models of Neurodegeneration
DESCRIPTION:The UK Dementia Research Institute hosts the second SCMND symposium\, bringing together the international community using stem cell models to understand and treat neurodegenerative disease. \nSCMND was created to fill a gap. Researchers working with iPSC and stem cell-derived models of neurodegeneration had no dedicated forum in which to compare approaches\, troubleshoot methods or find collaborators. This is the second meeting\, delivered as part of the Cure-ND network\, and it runs over three days in Edinburgh. \nThe programme includes three keynote speakers\, 32 session speakers\, three early career researcher talks\, 10 flash talks and four poster sessions\, with poster prizes awarded on the final day. Confirmed plenary speakers are Valentina Fossati (JAX-NYSCF)\, Steven Finkbeiner (Gladstone Institute) and Su-Chun Zhang (Sanford Burnham Prebys). \nWorth a look if you work with iPSC-derived neurons\, organoids or any stem cell-based model of neurodegeneration. Speakers and poster presenters are selected from submitted abstracts\, so the ECR talks\, flash talks and poster prizes are genuinely open rather than invitation-only. \nAbstract submission is open until 31 December 2026. Abstracts will be selected for posters\, three oral presentations and 10 flash talks\, and everyone who submits will hear whether they have a poster or a talk by 28 February 2027 at the latest. Posters can be up to A0 and must be in portrait orientation. Full details are on the SCMND poster information page. \nRegistration closes 5 May 2027. UK DRI members attend free. Registration is £300 for all other academic researchers\, £450 for non-academic attendees without a poster\, and £550 for non-academic attendees presenting a poster. An optional conference dinner on 19 May is a further £48. \nRegister via the University of Edinburgh\, or find out more on the SCMND website.
