SUMMARY:Improving Equity and Inclusion in Health Research
DESCRIPTION:The Methodologies Workstream of the Multiple Long-Term Conditions (MLTC) Cross-NIHR Collaboration is running a day of online training on improving equity and inclusion in health research\, on Friday 16 October 2026 from 0915 to 1500. \nThe training will consider inequities in the design and conduct of health research\, with examples of involving people living with multiple long-term conditions (MLTC). Sessions will examine the inclusion and recruitment of under-served groups\, including people who lack capacity to consent and those experiencing socioeconomic disadvantage\, alongside intersectionality and the potential for AI to widen existing inequities. \nDrawing on methodological expertise\, community perspectives and the NIHR INCLUDE framework\, the day will give participants the chance to reflect on challenges within their own research and consider practical approaches to improving inclusion and equity in MLTC research. \nRegister your interest using the form below. Confirmation of your place will be sent in due course. \nRegister your interest \nIf research inclusion is on your agenda\, you may also want to join Research inclusion as a condition of funding – 2 years on earlier the same week\, on Wednesday 14 October. \n\nPlease contact James Finney (james.finney@leicester.ac.uk) with any questions. \nMethodologies Workstream\, Multiple Long-Term Conditions (MLTC) Cross-NIHR Collaboration (CNC)

SUMMARY:Research Showcase - Wearable Technology in Depression and Dementia
DESCRIPTION:What can wearable technology tell us about the everyday experiences of older people living with depression or dementia? Could continuously collected data reveal changes that conventional clinical assessments miss? \nThis livestream is part of the Dementia Researcher weekly Showcase series. Each week we host a 45 minute online session bringing researchers together to share their work\, methods\, and ideas. \nIn this session\, Dr Ta-Wei Guu will explore how wearable technologies can be used to better understand behavioural patterns\, sleep disturbances\, and responses to treatment in older people experiencing depression and dementia. \nThe session will consider how data collected outside traditional clinical settings could provide a more continuous picture of changes in behaviour and health over time. Ta-Wei will also discuss plans to develop a technology-enabled longitudinal cohort\, using wearable technology to study ageing populations and investigate how patterns observed over months and years might inform future research and clinical practice. \nDr Ta-Wei Guu is a Consultant Psychiatrist and Assistant Professor based at CMUBH in Taiwan\, with an affiliation to the Institute of Psychiatry\, Psychology & Neuroscience at King’s College London. His work brings together psychiatry\, ageing research\, and digital technologies to explore new approaches to understanding mental health and dementia in later life. \nAttendees can expect a practical and research focused session with time for questions and discussion. \n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Alzheimer’s Disease Atlas: Mapping global preparedness for dementia
DESCRIPTION:The Alzheimer’s Disease Atlas is the first of its kind platform highlighting how countries diagnose\, treat and support people living with dementia. \nThe platform brings together the key indicators needed to assess a country’s preparedness for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias\, helping advocates\, policymakers and healthcare leaders identify where people are being left behind. \nProviding a country-by-country insight into dementia policies\, diagnosis\, treatment and care\, research and support available the AD Atlas exposes stark inequalities around the world. Demonstrating that people living with dementia can face very different experiences of diagnosis\, care and support depending on where they live. \nDespite over 55 million people living with dementia globally and significant advances in treatment\, governments and healthcare systems are failing to keep pace. While the burden of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias continues to increase\, only 24.2 percent of countries that adopted the WHO Global Action Plan on Dementia have a fully funded national dementia plan. \nThe AD Atlas reveals\, not only the scale of the global disparity\, but the systemic gaps that continue to fail people living with dementia and their families. \nThe webinar will highlight key findings and show how comparative country data can inform policy dialogue\, prioritisation\, and resource allocation. \nWe are pleased to offer AI translation for this webinar in over 60 languages\, including: Arabic\, Bengali\, Cantonese\, Chinese (Simplified)\, Chinese (Traditional)\, Croatian\, Czech\, Danish\, Dutch\, English\, Estonian\, Finnish\, French\, German\, Greek\, Gujarati\, Hebrew\, Hindi\, Indonesian (Bahasa)\, Italian\, Japanese\, Korean\, Malay\, Persian\, Polish\, Portuguese\, Serbian\, Slovak\, Spanish\, Swahili\, Swedish\, Tagalog\, Tamil\, Thai\, Turkish\, Urdu\, Vietnamese. \nThe webinar will be available for viewing on ADI’s YouTube channel after the event. \nDate & Time\nYou can choose to attend one or more of the following webinars (times shown are London time): \n\nThursday 22 October 2026\, 10:00 AM\nThursday 22 October 2026\, 4:00 PM\n\nSpeakers\nDr Stéphane Epelbaum – International Therapy Area Lead Medical Affairs Neurology and Pain\, Eli Lilly \nStéphane Epelbaum\, MD\, PhD is a neurologist who took part in helping shift the concept of Alzheimer’s disease from that of an unspecific dementia to a precise clinico-biological entity. Held four times a year\, the Hub offers free talks\, practical information\, and opportunities to connect and network with others. \nTwo presentations\nDr Shadreck Mwale (GIAM/UWL) – Why people living with dementia from African and Caribbean communities in the UK do not always get the care they need. \nPeople living with dementia from African and Caribbean communities in the UK often face unfair problems when trying to get health and social care. Research and policy sometimes explain this by focusing too much on culture\, stigma\, or family caregiving\, rather than looking closely at racism\, unfair systems\, and wider social factors. This presentation argues that services and policies need to change so responsibility is placed on the system\, not on the communities already facing disadvantage. \nDr Laura Cole (GIAM/UWL) – Living with meaning\, purpose and influence after a dementia diagnosis. How a national network of people living with young onset dementia is shaping dementia research. \nA national network of people living with young onset dementia (diagnosed before the age of 65 years) meets monthly online to advise researchers\, academics and PhD students on the development and delivery of dementia research. This presentation will showcase the important contribution network members make to shaping dementia research and explore the positive impact that involvement in the network has had on their own lives\, providing opportunities for meaning\, purpose and influence after a dementia diagnosis. \nAttendance is free and everyone is welcome. Book your place via Eventbrite\, or contact laura.cole@uwl.ac.uk or 020 8231 2161. \n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Barcelona Blood-Brain Barrier Conference – B4 2026
DESCRIPTION:The blood-brain barrier (BBB) separates the blood circulation from the brain tissue. However\, despite its name\, the BBB is far from a static\, impenetrable barrier. Instead\, this highly dynamic structure responds to and regulates the complex requirements of brain function. \nTo advance our knowledge of how the BBB impacts health and disease\, the 3rd edition of the Barcelona Blood-Brain Barrier Conference will bring together scientists from across the globe to discuss emerging topics in BBB physiology\, pathology and translational research. This interdisciplinary event will incorporate neuroscience\, vascular biology\, protein engineering\, bioengineering\, and nanomedicine to provide a unique platform to foster collaboration and address challenges shaping the future of this field. \nIn the name of the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) and the Institut Químic de Sarrià (IQS)\, we look forward to welcoming you to the vibrant and historic city of Barcelona to take part in these lively discussions\, make lasting connections\, and push the boundaries of the field forward. \nEvent Details

SUMMARY:Research Showcase - Why Communities Matter in Digital Health Research
DESCRIPTION:How do we make sure digital health research reflects the people it is intended to support? And what happens when communities are involved in research rather than simply being studied? \nThis livestream is part of the Dementia Researcher weekly Showcase series. Each week we host a 45 minute online session bringing researchers together to share their work\, methods and ideas. \nIn this session\, Anisha Ramjuttun will explore the importance of public engagement and community involvement in digital health research. Drawing on their work within an NHS research study using technologies including sensors\, wearable devices and sleep mats to monitor people’s health in their own homes\, Anisha will consider how researchers can communicate this work and involve a wider range of communities in shaping it. \nThe session will draw on Anisha’s experience of community outreach across Surrey and working with lived experience groups. They will discuss the importance of making research understandable and relevant to different audiences\, building relationships beyond traditional research settings\, and creating opportunities for people to contribute their knowledge and experiences. \nAnisha is a Research Assistant at Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. Their work combines digital health research with public engagement\, with a particular interest in ensuring different communities have opportunities to understand\, participate in and influence research. \nAttendees can expect a practical and research focused session with time for questions and discussion. \n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Research Showcase - Outdoor Activities and Wellbeing in Dementia
DESCRIPTION:How can organised outdoor activities support the wellbeing of people living with dementia? And how does research change when people with dementia are collaborators rather than simply participants? \nThis livestream is part of the Dementia Researcher weekly Showcase series. Each week we host a 45 minute online session bringing researchers together to share their work\, methods and ideas. \nIn this session\, Mason McLeod will present their PhD research exploring how engagement with organised outdoor activities shapes perceptions of wellbeing among people living with dementia in the Scottish Highlands. \nUsing Participatory Action Research (PAR)\, Mason places people living with dementia at the heart of their research. They work with a Lived Experience Advisory Panel to guide the project\, ensuring that the voices\, experiences and priorities of people with dementia inform how the research is designed and conducted. \nMason will also discuss their work with two organisations providing structured outdoor activities for people living with dementia. Through in-depth qualitative research\, these settings will form comparative case studies examining how participation in outdoor activities can influence wellbeing and the experience of living with dementia within rural communities. \nMason is a PhD student at the Centre for Rural Health Sciences at the University of the Highlands and Islands. Their research brings together dementia\, rural health\, outdoor activity and participatory approaches to explore wellbeing while championing the right of people living with dementia to be actively involved in research. \nAttendees can expect a practical and research focused session with time for questions and discussion. \n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Caribbean Brain Health Summit 2026
DESCRIPTION:Amagi Health is launching the Caribbean Brain Health Summit\, a week-long regional convening on brain health\, dementia and ageing\, based in Kingston\, Jamaica\, with activities across the Caribbean and its diaspora. \nThe summit marks the first year of a new regional initiative to put dementia\, ageing and brain health at the centre of Caribbean policy and practice. Rather than importing a model from elsewhere\, the aim is to surface and connect the work Caribbean people and organisations are already doing\, then build shared regional infrastructure to support it. \nIt’s deliberately broad. Alongside researchers and clinicians\, it brings in voices from business\, technology\, the creative sector\, civil society and communities\, including people living with dementia and carers managing care across islands and continents. Anchor activities will run in host countries and diaspora hubs\, supported by local organisations. \nWhy it matters for researchers\nThe Caribbean is ageing fast\, and it’s under-represented in global conversations about brain health and dementia. If your work touches on African Caribbean populations\, health inequalities or dementia risk reduction\, this is a chance to connect with the people building the region’s research and policy agenda from the ground up. \nThe summit is the public-facing start of the programme. A scientific meeting follows in Kingston in February 2027: the Population-Level Approaches to Dementia Risk Reduction (PLADRR) Meeting\, bringing together researchers\, clinicians and policymakers. It builds on the PLADRR meeting in Auckland in February 2025 and on the NIA and University of Michigan HCAP infrastructure\, with a focus on Caribbean and Caribbean diaspora researchers and early career researchers. There are opportunities there for UK-based researchers with existing Caribbean collaborations or diaspora-relevant work. \nGet involved\nRegister your interest on the summit website. Organisations that want to partner can complete the partner sign-up form and send their logo and digital assets to info@amagibrainhealth.org. \nFor the thinking behind the initiative\, Dr Ishtar Govia sets out the case in Caribbean360. \n\nClick Here
