SUMMARY:Transforming neuropsychological assessments with AI
DESCRIPTION:Neuropsychological tests are a cornerstone of the assessment of cognitive impairment in dementia and related neurodegenerative disorders\, yet their administration and scoring are often time-consuming and susceptible to subjectivity.  \n\nProf. Nicolas Langer’s research group develops AI-based solutions for the automated analysis of established neuropsychological instruments\, including the Rey–Osterrieth Complex Figure\, the Five-Point Test\, verbal fluency tasks\, and related measures that are highly sensitive to early cognitive decline. By combining state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms with digital acquisition methods—such as speech recordings and digital pen technologies—the group enables objective\, reliable\, and time-efficient quantification of cognitive performance. \nIn this presentation\,  \n\nProf. Nicolas Langer illustrates how clinically relevant needs in dementia diagnostics are identified and translated into data-driven models that capture subtle deviations from normative cognitive functioning. SUMMARY:Masterclasses and Spring School: Large-scale Data Analysis
DESCRIPTION:This series of short courses will explore the process of analysing complex large-scale survey data using traditional statistical methods and AI-supported approaches. It will be delivered in a hybrid format – offering participants the chance to join online or in person – between 2 and 5 March 2026. \nParticipants can choose between four courses on a variety of topics. A discount is available for participants attending all four courses. \nSummary\nIn the era of big data and rapidly advancing AI technologies\, the real challenge is no longer whether data exist\, but how to extract credible\, interpretable\, and policy-relevant evidence from massive and complex datasets. This four-course series uses International Large-Scale Assessment (ILSA) data as its central example to guide participants – from beginners to those with prior analytical experience – through the process of analysing complex large-scale survey data in the social sciences. \nConfronting the challenges inherent in complex secondary datasets – such as multilevel structures\, cross-national sampling\, complex weighting schemes and latent constructs – the series moves from foundational concepts to advanced applications. SUMMARY:Qualitative Methods for Understanding Diverse Lives
DESCRIPTION:In this one-day online training workshop you will be introduced to four qualitative research methods to better understand diverse lives – Photo Go-Alongs\, Collage\, Life History Interviews and Participant Packs. When researching social groups\, researchers may focus on categories such as age\, gender\, sexuality and so on. These categories can turn catch-all terms into catch-all agendas. \nTreating groups of people with one shared characteristic as homogenous risks a cookie-cutter approach which overlooks diverse lives and needs. Given the complexity of what it means to be a person\, a one-size fits all approach to engagement cannot suffice. The methods introduced in this training workshop are beneficial in exploring diverse lives and can be used when researching with any group. \nThe session is aimed at PhD students and academics of all career stages across the UK who want to better understand: \n\nThe specific place-based needs of people\nThe everyday practices of people\nThe world from participants’ perspectives\nHow to work with people in an inclusive and accessible way\n\nThis online training workshop will be structured as follows:   \n\nIntroductions\nOrigins and Approach\nMethods deep dive:\nPhoto Go-Alongs\nParticipant packs\nCollage\nLife Histories\nWorkshops\nLearnings and close\n\nBy the end of the course participants will: \n\nBe able to think critically about how creative\, participatory methods might be incorporated into their research and/ or teaching.\nHave broadened their understanding of research methods from tools of data collection to techniques for capacity building.\nHave workshopped four qualitative methods for creatively engaging with people (Photo Go-Alongs\, Collage\, Life Histories and Participant packs).\n\nThis online training workshop will take place over the course of 1 day on Wednesday 11th March 2026 between 10:00 and 16:00\, with 1 hour for lunch between 12:30 and 13:30. \nCost: \nThe fee per teaching day is: £60 per day for registered students. £150 per day for staff at academic institutions\, Research Councils researchers\, public sector staff\, staff at registered charity organisations and recognised research institutions. £350 per day for all other participants. \nIn the event of cancellation by the delegate a full refund of the course fee is available up to two weeks prior to the course. DESCRIPTION:Why do some people with genetic risk go on to experience cognitive decline while others remain resilient. How does genetic vulnerability shape pathways to later life cognitive impairment and dementia. \nThis livestream is part of the Dementia Researcher weekly Showcase series. Each week we host a 45 minute online session bringing researchers together to share their work\, methods\, and ideas. \nIn this session\, Dr Donald Lyall\, Senior Lecturer in Population Brain Health at the University of Glasgow\, will present research on the role of APOE genotype in later life cognitive impairment and dementia. Donald’s work uses population health and epidemiological approaches to understand how genetic risk interacts with lifestyle and environmental factors to influence brain health and cognitive outcomes. He has extensive experience analysing large cohort datasets to uncover mediators and modifiers of cognitive decline\, with a particular focus on how APOE affects vulnerability in ageing populations. \nDonald will explore whether possession of specific APOE variants increases susceptibility to cognitive impairment\, and what intermediate phenotypes may mediate these associations\, shedding light on mechanisms that link genetic risk with cognitive health outcomes. \nAttendees can expect a clear and research focused talk followed by time for questions and discussion. \n\n\n\n\nWatch the Recording

DESCRIPTION:Turn back the clock and encounter 200 years of chemistry at UCL\, live at the Bloomsbury Theatre. \nAs well as talks and short films\, moments from key Victorian-era experiments will be re-created using original apparatus as well as modern tools. \nUniversity College London was founded in 1826 with chemistry being chosen as one of the first subjects to be offered at England’s first new university for more than 500 years. UCL Chemistry opened its doors for teaching and research in 1828 and has been the home of an astonishing array of scientific discoveries\, minds\, collaborations\, and community. \nKey moments narrated in the event include: \n\nThe discovery of the noble gases – a whole new section of the periodic table. For this achievement Sir William Ramsay\, UCL professor of chemistry\, was awarded the Nobel prize\nThe work of Dame Kathleen Lonsdale. UCL’s first female professor lay the foundations of the field of crystallography – the study of the atomic structure of crystals.\nStudents known as the “Chōshū Five”. These five young men had left Japan in secret to learn about the customs and technology of the west. They studied analytical chemistry under Professor Alexander Williamson\, who also served as their guardian. After returning home they played a role in Japan’s modernisation.\n\nWe’ll be travelling from Victorian London to World War 2\, to the 1970s to present day\, commemorating four truly remarkable periods across centuries of scientific discovery and innovation. \nThis event celebrates those achievements and highlights the values and ideas that grew across the UCL Chemistry’s rich and dynamic history to shape the department that is celebrated today. \nAll profit from ticket sales will go towards UCL Chemistry’s Student Hardship Fund. \n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Cancer-Alzheimer's Disease Inverse Correlation
DESCRIPTION:Epidemiological studies consistently report an inverse correlation between cancer and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). \nThe risk of AD in patients with cancer is reduced by 25-35%. Conversely\, the risk of cancer is halved in patients with AD. A cancer history is associated with a measurable delay in AD onset in a dose-dependent manner\, as individuals who previously had two cancers of different origins showed a later mean age of AD onset compared to individuals who previously had one or no prior cancer. The inverse correlation between cancer and AD is further corroborated by neuropathological findings. For example\, a prior cancer diagnosis was associated with a reduced burden of AD pathology. Studies of postmortem brain tissues collected from patients with glioblastoma showed that regions with amyloid beta and phosphorylated tau deposits were associated with little to no cortical tumor cell infiltration. Currently\, a critical gap exists between the repeatedly observed inverse association of the two diseases in epidemiological studies and a mechanistic understanding of this compelling phenomenon. To address this knowledge gap\, this NIA/NCI workshop will convene experts in AD\, cancer biology\, statistics\, epidemiology\, and translational/clinical research to discuss this topic and the challenges faced by this nascent field. \nUltimately\, by connecting these distinct disciplines\, the hope is to elucidate the complex mechanisms that underly the inverse correlation and uncover insights into novel therapeutic interventions for these devasting diseases. \nRegister to Attend \n  \nFor more information\, contact Rebekah Feng at rebekah.feng@nih.gov or Malgorzata Klauzinska at malgorzata.klauzinska@nih.gov.
