DESCRIPTION:Turn back the clock and encounter 200 years of chemistry at UCL\, live at the Bloomsbury Theatre. \nAs well as talks and short films\, moments from key Victorian-era experiments will be re-created using original apparatus as well as modern tools. \nUniversity College London was founded in 1826 with chemistry being chosen as one of the first subjects to be offered at England’s first new university for more than 500 years. UCL Chemistry opened its doors for teaching and research in 1828 and has been the home of an astonishing array of scientific discoveries\, minds\, collaborations\, and community. \nKey moments narrated in the event include: \n\nThe discovery of the noble gases – a whole new section of the periodic table. For this achievement Sir William Ramsay\, UCL professor of chemistry\, was awarded the Nobel prize\nThe work of Dame Kathleen Lonsdale. UCL’s first female professor lay the foundations of the field of crystallography – the study of the atomic structure of crystals.\nStudents known as the “Chōshū Five”. These five young men had left Japan in secret to learn about the customs and technology of the west. They studied analytical chemistry under Professor Alexander Williamson\, who also served as their guardian. After returning home they played a role in Japan’s modernisation.\n\nWe’ll be travelling from Victorian London to World War 2\, to the 1970s to present day\, commemorating four truly remarkable periods across centuries of scientific discovery and innovation. \nThis event celebrates those achievements and highlights the values and ideas that grew across the UCL Chemistry’s rich and dynamic history to shape the department that is celebrated today. \nAll profit from ticket sales will go towards UCL Chemistry’s Student Hardship Fund. \n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Cancer-Alzheimer's Disease Inverse Correlation
DESCRIPTION:Epidemiological studies consistently report an inverse correlation between cancer and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). \nThe risk of AD in patients with cancer is reduced by 25-35%. Conversely\, the risk of cancer is halved in patients with AD. A cancer history is associated with a measurable delay in AD onset in a dose-dependent manner\, as individuals who previously had two cancers of different origins showed a later mean age of AD onset compared to individuals who previously had one or no prior cancer. The inverse correlation between cancer and AD is further corroborated by neuropathological findings. For example\, a prior cancer diagnosis was associated with a reduced burden of AD pathology. Studies of postmortem brain tissues collected from patients with glioblastoma showed that regions with amyloid beta and phosphorylated tau deposits were associated with little to no cortical tumor cell infiltration. Currently\, a critical gap exists between the repeatedly observed inverse association of the two diseases in epidemiological studies and a mechanistic understanding of this compelling phenomenon. To address this knowledge gap\, this NIA/NCI workshop will convene experts in AD\, cancer biology\, statistics\, epidemiology\, and translational/clinical research to discuss this topic and the challenges faced by this nascent field. \nUltimately\, by connecting these distinct disciplines\, the hope is to elucidate the complex mechanisms that underly the inverse correlation and uncover insights into novel therapeutic interventions for these devasting diseases. \nRegister to Attend \n  \nFor more information\, contact Rebekah Feng at rebekah.feng@nih.gov or Malgorzata Klauzinska at malgorzata.klauzinska@nih.gov.

Each week we host a 45 minute online session bringing researchers together to share their work\, methods\, and ideas. \nIn this session\, Sara Zsadanyi will present her research exploring neuroimaging markers in Down syndrome related Alzheimer’s disease\, with a particular focus on cerebrovascular lesions observed through brain imaging. Her work aims to improve understanding of how vascular changes may contribute to dementia risk and disease progression in this population. \nSara is a PhD student at the Sant Pau Memory Unit and Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona\, specialising in biomarkers and neuroimaging. His work focuses on the Atp11b gene\, which encodes a phospholipid flippase involved in transporting phosphatidylserine and phosphatidylethanolamine\, and how disruption of this pathway contributes to vascular pathology and cognitive impairment. \nUsing transcriptomics and proteomics approaches\, Daniel investigates the molecular mechanisms underlying disease progression\, with a particular focus on sex differences and how these may shape vulnerability and outcomes in vascular dementia. \nDaniel is a researcher at the University of Edinburgh specialising in vascular contributions to cognitive impairment and dementia. DESCRIPTION:This is the third edition of this groundbreaking conference\, which aims to foster collaboration and knowledge exchange between the fields of Down Syndrome associated Alzheimer disease (DSAD) and autosomal dominant AD (ADAD). \nThe event will feature research findings\, clinical trials\, and more\, with an inclusive approach to diversity\, representation\, and accessibility. \n\n\n\n\nThis conference will be a seminal event in advancing the understanding and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease (AD)\, particularly by bridging the fields of Down Syndrome Alzheimer’s disease (DSAD) and Autosomal Dominant Alzheimer’s disease (ADAD). It emphasizes collaboration\, ethical considerations\, and inclusivity\, fostering a unified approach to tackling both conditions. \nA key focus of the conference will be creating lasting networks and collaborations\, ensuring that the dialogue and progress continue well beyond the event itself. Building on the success of the previous conferences\, which attracted close to 200 in-person attendees and many more online from over 20 countries\, this third conference aims to expand on that momentum. In addition to the strong support from the DSAD research community\, we have renowned international ADAD speakers\, with outreach through the DIAN network. The event will promote cross-fertilization of ideas\, highlighting the potential for shared insights between these genetically determined forms of AD. This is particularly timely as we now have several ongoing drug development projects in both DSAD and ADAD\, with more planned. The exchange of ideas between researchers in these areas is crucial for maximizing the impact of therapeutic strategies. \nIn conclusion\, the conference will cultivate a collaborative\, diverse\, and inclusive environment to advance research in DSAD and ADAD. The collective expertise of the organizing and scientific committee\, combined with support from key stakeholders in Alzheimer’s research\, will ensure a successful and impactful event. SUMMARY:PPA Awareness Day 2026 Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA) is a rare language led dementia. People with PPA have told us that it can be difficult to get an accurate diagnosis and to get the right support. \nThe 2026 awareness campaign aims to increase knowledge about PPA and what the right supports might be\, and this year is delivered is a collaboration with the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists\, Rare Dementia Support and the Memory Services National Accreditation Programme (MSNAP). MSNAP is a quality improvement network under the Royal College of Psychiatrists that accredits UK dementia services. \nThe campaign will run for 10-weeks. Each Friday we will share news\, personal anecdotes from people with lived experience or updates on research via social media. \nThe campaign will culminate in a webinar at midday on PPA Awareness Day – Friday 10th April. \nThe webinar is for everyone and will include short presentations from: \n\na world leading neurologist\nspeech and language therapists\nrepresentatives from Rare Dementia Support and MSNAP\npeople with lived experience\n\nRegister to Attend
