SUMMARY:Cancer-Alzheimer's Disease Inverse Correlation
DESCRIPTION:Epidemiological studies consistently report an inverse correlation between cancer and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). \nThe risk of AD in patients with cancer is reduced by 25-35%. Conversely\, the risk of cancer is halved in patients with AD. A cancer history is associated with a measurable delay in AD onset in a dose-dependent manner\, as individuals who previously had two cancers of different origins showed a later mean age of AD onset compared to individuals who previously had one or no prior cancer. The inverse correlation between cancer and AD is further corroborated by neuropathological findings. For example\, a prior cancer diagnosis was associated with a reduced burden of AD pathology. Studies of postmortem brain tissues collected from patients with glioblastoma showed that regions with amyloid beta and phosphorylated tau deposits were associated with little to no cortical tumor cell infiltration. Currently\, a critical gap exists between the repeatedly observed inverse association of the two diseases in epidemiological studies and a mechanistic understanding of this compelling phenomenon. To address this knowledge gap\, this NIA/NCI workshop will convene experts in AD\, cancer biology\, statistics\, epidemiology\, and translational/clinical research to discuss this topic and the challenges faced by this nascent field. \nUltimately\, by connecting these distinct disciplines\, the hope is to elucidate the complex mechanisms that underly the inverse correlation and uncover insights into novel therapeutic interventions for these devasting diseases. \nRegister to Attend \n  \nFor more information\, contact Rebekah Feng at rebekah.feng@nih.gov or Malgorzata Klauzinska at malgorzata.klauzinska@nih.gov.

SUMMARY:Catchup - Research Showcase - Imaging Alzheimer’s Disease in Down Syndrome
DESCRIPTION:Why are people with Down syndrome at increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease and how can brain imaging help us understand this process. What role do cerebrovascular changes play in the development of cognitive decline. \nThis livestream is part of the Dementia Researcher weekly Showcase series. Each week we host a 45 minute online session bringing researchers together to share their work\, methods\, and ideas. \nIn this session\, Sara Zsadanyi will present her research exploring neuroimaging markers in Down syndrome related Alzheimer’s disease\, with a particular focus on cerebrovascular lesions observed through brain imaging. Her work aims to improve understanding of how vascular changes may contribute to dementia risk and disease progression in this population. \nSara is a PhD student at the Sant Pau Memory Unit and Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona\, specialising in biomarkers and neuroimaging. Her research focuses on improving early detection and understanding of Alzheimer’s disease in people with Down syndrome\, combining imaging approaches with clinical research to better characterise disease pathways. \nAttendees can expect a clear and research focused talk followed by time for questions and discussion. \n\n\n\n\nWatch the Recording

SUMMARY:Catchup - Research Showcase - Sex Differences and Molecular Pathways in Vascular Dementia
DESCRIPTION:How do small vessel changes in the brain contribute to vascular dementia. And why might disease pathways differ between males and females. \nThis livestream is part of the Dementia Researcher weekly Showcase series. Each week we host a 45 minute online session bringing researchers together to share their work\, methods\, and ideas. \nIn this session\, Dr Daniel Ruiz Gabarre will present his research on vascular dementia using a preclinical rat model of small vessel disease. His work focuses on the Atp11b gene\, which encodes a phospholipid flippase involved in transporting phosphatidylserine and phosphatidylethanolamine\, and how disruption of this pathway contributes to vascular pathology and cognitive impairment. \nUsing transcriptomics and proteomics approaches\, Daniel investigates the molecular mechanisms underlying disease progression\, with a particular focus on sex differences and how these may shape vulnerability and outcomes in vascular dementia. \nDaniel is a researcher at the University of Edinburgh specialising in vascular contributions to cognitive impairment and dementia. His work combines experimental models with molecular profiling techniques to better understand mechanisms driving small vessel disease. \nAttendees can expect a research focused session with time for questions and discussion. \n\n\n\n\nWatch the Recording

SUMMARY:Innovation Forum: Place-based health and wellness
DESCRIPTION:This year we’re inviting you to roll-up your sleeves and help us define a place-based approach to healthy ageing. \n\n\n\n\nLast year our first ever Healthy Ageing & Care Innovation Forum brought together pioneers from industry\, academia\, care\, and community sectors to re-examine how we understand healthy ageing\, identity and social connection. This year\, we’re raising the ambition. \nWe’re inviting leading thinkers\, creators\, and partners from across the health tech\, built environment\, and innovation ecosystems to help shape the future of one of the most exciting living labs for healthy ageing in the UK\, situated within The Chocolate Quarter; already a flagship model of intergenerational\, open retirement living. \nOur goal is to explore how we can combine people\, place\, nature\, technology\, and data to prototype new models of healthy ageing and care innovation that can scale regionally\, nationally and globally. \nTogether\, we’ll investigate: \n\nHow people of all ages move through and use these spaces; and how design\, technology and community activation can promote healthier choices and more connected lives\, whilst respecting people’s individual choices.\nThe role of emerging technologies\, smart environments\, and data-driven insights in improving well-being\, resilience and independence.\nHow we create environments that support people living with dementia\, frailty or long-term conditions\, while celebrating movement\, purpose and contribution.\nWhat Somerdale Pavilion\, The Chocolate Quarter and St Monica Trust itself could become over the next 5\, 10\, 15 years; and what interventions\, partnerships and prototypes we should initiate now.\n\nThis is an opportunity to help shape a real world test bed for healthy ageing and care innovation\, rooted in the community but connected to cutting edge research\, innovation and industry. \n\n\n\n\nTake a look at what we got up to at our Innovation Forum last March. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAgenda\n\n\n\n09:30 AM – 10:00 AM \nWelcome and sign in\nWelcome to our innovation forum 2026. Please sign in on arrival\, settle in and help yourself to refreshments \n\n\n10:00 AM – 10:20 AM \nOpening Remarks\nOpening remarks from David Williams\, CEO of St Monica Trust\, Paul Tisdale\, Director of Villages and Sara Naylor-Wild\, Director of Care \n\n\n10:30 AM – 11:15 AM \nPanel: Integrating Care Into the Wider Research & Innovation Ecosystem\nPanel discussion featuring contributions from: Health Innovation West — regional innovation pipelines and adoption/scale-up pathways. ARCO — sector‑wide insights on integrated retirement communities. NIHR — opportunities for place‑based\, longitudinal and participatory research. National Care Forum — the role of care providers in unlocking social innovation. \n\n\n11:20 AM – 12:00 PM \nRapid Prototyping Workshop: Reimagining Healthy Ageing\nA fast‑paced\, hands‑on session inspired by St Monica Trust’s four pillars: Sleep better\, move more\, stay connected\, live healthy. \n\n\n12:00 PM – 01:00 PM \nLunch\n01:00 PM – 03:00 PM \n\n\nWalking Workshop\nJoin for an immersive activity to think about how people move through our spaces\, how we can enhance and future proof them\, and how we can create a spring board for health focused innovation \n\n\n03:00 PM – 04:00 PM \nFinal reflections and closing remarks\nWe will conclude the day by reflecting on our key insights and sharing recommendations and ideas for St Monica Trust and all attendees. \n\nRegister
