SUMMARY:Families for the Treatment of Hereditary MND (FaTHoM)
DESCRIPTION:Families for the Treatment of Hereditary MND (FaTHoM) is an initiative to bring together the community of families affected by inherited (genetic) forms of MND. \nWith meetings and events consisting of expert talks on key issues affecting such families\, FaTHoM is open to any person living with an inherited form of MND\, and the close relatives of those affected by inherited forms of the disease. \nA dedicated day for those affected by genetic forms of MND and their wider families. An opportunity to learn about current and future trials and research from leading neurologists and researchers\, and to meet with other families from around the country living with hereditary MND in a friendly and supportive educational environment. \nFaTHoM Day\, 2026 will take place on Thursday\, April 30th 2026 at the Milton Hill House Hotel\, Abingdon\, Oxfordshire.  \nThis event is free of charge\, and a maximum of four people per family may attend (aged over 18). DESCRIPTION:Dementia Update – Virtual Series #14 – Event by Swiss Network for Dementia Research \nEvelina Voloviceva is a PhD student in the group of Dr. Jérôme Robert\, where she studies how genetic variation in apolipoprotein E (APOE) shapes the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Although APOE4 is known as the strongest genetic risk factor\, how APOE influences brain function is still not fully understood. \nIn this webinar\, Evelina Voloviceva presents a new perspective on apolipoprotein E (APOE)\, moving beyond its traditional view as a single lipid transport protein. In the brain\, APOE is produced by different cell types including astrocytes\, pericytes\, and microglia which generate distinct lipoprotein particles. DESCRIPTION:EquaDem\, one of four national dementia plus networks hosts its 2nd annual conference on tackling inequalities in dementia care & diagnosis. \n\n\n\n\nOne million people are living with dementia in the UK\, with numbers continuing to increase. Research continues to show people living with dementia and their unpaid carers experience many inequalities in accessing care and obtaining an assessment and diagnosis. The first national network dedicated to finding solutions to inequalities in dementia diagnosis and care\, EquaDem\, is finding solutions to address these inequalities by working together with people living with dementia and their families as well as care professionals and Third Sector organisations. \nEquaDem’s second annual conference will showcase key findings from the network’s collaborative work to date and bring together experts in dementia policy and practice with those with lived experience of dementia to find the best ways of reducing current inequalities. SUMMARY:Inaugural SENSE meeting
DESCRIPTION:Sensory\, motor and perceptual disturbances are common and often life-limiting consequences of brain disorders. These disturbances do not neatly adhere to medical specialities\, posing particular challenges to diagnosis and treatment. More broadly\, these brain-based disturbances offer insights regarding both vulnerability and adaptability of our sensory and motor systems. \nThis inaugural SENSE meeting will showcase research across the senses. We will introduce the sensoria: from visual and auditory\, to proprioceptive (the ‘sixth sense’) and vestibular systems (the ‘silent sense’) alongside systems relevant to eye\, gait and balance control. We will present emerging findings informing understanding of mechanisms underlying imbalance\, spatial disorientation and altered perception. SUMMARY:Reframing Dementia\, Distress and Inpatient Care
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the University of West London on May 14\, 2026\, at 6:00 PM for an inspiring talk from Professor Emma Wolverson. Professor of Ageing and Dementia at the Geller Institute of Ageing and Memory. \n\n\nAs a clinical academic\, my programme of research challenges negative perceptions of dementia by focusing on people’s strengths and by supporting the clinical teams who care for them. My goal is to empower teams to develop and deliver evidence-based care to improve experiences and outcomes for people living with dementia and their families\, enabling health and social care professionals to respond to an individual’s needs with skill and empathy. My research programme draws on positive psychology to deliver this evidence. Building on these foundations\, my current National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) funded research programme focuses on the dementia crisis – particularly when a crisis leads to an emergency admission within an inpatient mental health ward\, a setting which cares for the most unwell\, vulnerable\, and high-risk people living with dementia. Being admitted can be frightening and overwhelming for both the person and their family. Stays are often long\, and many people do not return home afterwards. \nInpatient mental health wards for people living with dementia are an invisible and highly stigmatised setting where research has historically been absent\, and where the evidence base for high-quality care is lacking. In response\, my research is working directly with families and frontline clinical teams in these under-resourced ward settings to transform cultures of care and to improve safety and well-being during and following a crisis. \nThis forms the basis of my distinctive body of work\, which seeks to understand dementia through a lens of hope and possibility and\, in so doing\, drive practical\, evidence-based care in health and social care settings where it is most needed. \nYour data will be used to administer the event. DESCRIPTION:The EGGA 2026 masterclass will take place on Tuesday 19th\, Wednesday 20th and Thursday 21st May 2026. \nEGGA will be held on Zoom. Register for EGGA on our Zoom portal here. \nOur Essential Guide to Grant Applications (EGGA) is a free-to-attend\, online\, three-day masterclass\, funded and hosted by NIHR RSS USP\, on how to write a grant application for applied health or social care research that is strong from a methodological point of view\, reads well and presents a convincing case for funding. The event will cover important writing tips\, along with guidance on what reviewers will be looking for in an application. Attendees will learn how to make their research idea clear and compelling to reviewers\, how to write a good methods section and how to demonstrate credible support. \nThe online masterclass focuses on how to sell your research idea by: \n\nwriting a convincing application with a good structure\, flow and argument;\npresenting a strong methods section\, including statistical\, qualitative\, health economics and Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) elements;\nhaving a good project plan;\nengaging with sources of external support for your research.\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat’s the format?\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEGGA is held online. Content is delivered through: \n\nPresentations\nPanel discussions\nQ&A sessions\nOptional homework\, worksheets and exercises\n\n\n\n\n\nWho should attend?\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEGGA is open to all healthcare professionals\, social care and public health practitioners\, health researchers and SMEs who intend to apply to an open\, competitive\, peer-reviewed funding programme in the 12 months following the masterclass. Attendees are welcome internationally\, but the content will be geared towards UK-based funding systems. SUMMARY:Webinar - Autism and young onset dementia
DESCRIPTION:The Young Dementia Network webinar on Tuesday 19th May 2026 at 12.30-1.30pm will explore the experiences of autistic people when accessing dementia healthcare\, highlighting some of the barriers they may encounter and the importance of making services more accessible and inclusive. \nIt will outline the work being undertaken at Dementia UK to develop clear\, accessible information and resources for both the autistic community and healthcare professionals\, with the aim of improving understanding\, communication and support. \nIt will also examine the complex relationship between autism and young onset dementia. In particular\, it will consider how certain characteristics commonly associated with autism\, such as differences in communication\, behaviour and sensory processing\, may sometimes be misunderstood or misattributed as signs of young onset dementia. We will discuss how these overlaps can contribute to confusion in assessment and diagnosis\, and why greater awareness among healthcare professionals is essential. \nPresenters at the webinar include Ryan Gray\, Research Assistant at Dementia UK\, who leads on the young onset dementia strand of its 2023-2026 strategy and Gavin Stewart PhD\, a senior postdoctoral research fellow at King’s College London. Gavin is an expert in autism and ageing and his research takes a multifaceted approach to explore the life experiences of autistic people across adulthood and as they age. \nLou shares her lived experience as an autistic carer for her mum with dementia\, her difficulties in navigating services and her Mum’s transition into a care home. \n\nRegister

DESCRIPTION:Save the Date for TDP43 Summit 2026 – May 21\, 2026 in Madison\, Wisconsin \n\nWe invite researchers to submit abstracts for for new and emerging data on biomarkers for TDP43. Our goal is to feature cutting-edge research\, with a preference for unpublished or recently published findings that advance our understanding of TDP43 pathology and detection\, co-pathology with AD or other closely aligned topics.\n\nA selection of top applicants will be invited to give an oral presentation during the summit.  \nApplication Process\n\nApplicants are asked to submit a ~250-word abstract describing their research. Tables and figures are welcome and encouraged. Submissions will be reviewed based on scientific merit and relevance\, with priority given to novel data.
