SUMMARY:Genomics of Brain Disorders
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce the 5th conference on the Genomics of Brain Disorders. \nThis meeting will bring together international scientists and clinicians working across psychiatric\, neurodegenerative\, and neurodevelopmental disorders to explore how genetic variation shapes brain function and disease across the lifespan. By integrating perspectives from diverse disease areas\, the conference aims to identify shared principles and emerging insights across brain disorders. \nRecent advances in human genetics\, functional genomics\, and experimental modelling have transformed our understanding of the genetic architecture of brain disorders. Large-scale association studies\, sequencing efforts\, and multi-omic approaches are now revealing when and where genetic risk acts\, and how it converges on molecular pathways\, cell types\, and circuits in the healthy and diseased brain. \nThe programme will highlight these advances by discussing how to move from genetic discoveries to disease insight and by showcasing new tools and technologies to decode brain disorders. Sessions will also address applications to patient stratification and clinical trials\, as well as the translation of genetic findings into high-quality therapeutic targets. Together\, these discussions will explore how genomics is reshaping our understanding of brain disorders and accelerating the path from discovery to clinical impact. \nThe conference will feature invited talks from world-leading experts\, short talks and posters selected from abstracts\, and interactive networking sessions designed to spark discussion and foster new collaborations. \nImage credit: Jessica Johnson \n\nThe conference will begin at approximately 12.00 on Wednesday\, 16 September\, and will conclude around 13.00 on Friday\, 18 September 2026. All times are in BST. \nDiscussions will focus on a variety of exciting topics\, including: \n\nGenes in context: when and where genetic risk acts\nThe healthy brain: a genomic reference map\nFrom association to mechanism\nNew tools to decode brain disorders\nGenomics-driven patient stratification\nFrom human genetics to high-confidence targets\n\n\nDraft programme (53 KB) \n\nAbstract deadline: 7 July 2026 \nWe welcome abstracts from all areas relevant to the main themes of the meeting\, for both oral and poster presentations. Several oral presentations will be chosen from the abstracts submitted. Presenters of oral presentations are expected to be onsite for the duration of the conference\, whereas those presenting posters can do so in person or virtually. \nTo submit an abstract\, you must first register for the conference. Once your registration is completed\, you will be emailed a link to submit to the abstract submission portal. If you wish to edit your abstract following submission\, please use the link in the abstract acknowledgement email. \nAll abstracts must be submitted and\, if desired\, edited by the deadline. The scientific programme committee will then assess your abstract and you will be notified about 2 weeks after the deadline whether you have been selected to present an oral or poster presentation. If you require acknowledgment that your abstract has been accepted earlier than this\, please contact the event organiser. \nPoster boards onsite will accommodate 118 cm high by 84 cm wide (A0-portrait) of printed material. Accepted abstracts will appear in the conference programme book; poster board numbers will be allocated at the conference. \nAll those accepted for a poster presentation will also have the opportunity present a ~1 min ‘poster pitch’ summarising their work. \n\nDownload guidelines on correct abstract format (328 KB) \n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Cognitive Rejuvenation through OSK
DESCRIPTION:Restoring seemingly lost bodily functions in age and age-related disorders has\, over recent years\, transitioned from the realm of science fiction to tangible research questions with high translational potential. Among the available approaches\, partial cellular reprogramming has emerged as one of the most promising strategies to promote tissue regeneration and restore cellular function\, while at the same time preserving cellular identities. However\, whether this approach bears fruit to rejuvenate cognitive processes has remained unknown until recently. \nIn this talk\, Prof. Johannes Gräff will highlight recent findings from his laboratory\, which show that partial reprogramming of engram neurons – bona fide memory trace cells – by OSK-mediated gene therapy leads to cognitive rejuvenation. This intervention reverses the expression of senescence and disease-related cellular hallmarks in aged mice and models of Alzheimer’s disease (AD)\, re-establishes aberrant epigenetic-transcriptional patterns pertaining to synaptic plasticity and counteracts AD-typical neuronal hyperexcitability. Importantly\, irrespective of the brain area targeted or the behavioural paradigm employed\, engram reprogramming also restores learning and memory capacities to levels comparable of healthy young animals. These results posit that partial reprogramming of defined cell populations in the brain can be translationally exploited for cognitive restoration in aging and disease. \nEvent details: \n• Date: 28.05.2026\n• Time: 16:00\n• Duration: 45 minutes (includes Q&A)\n• Location: Online (link to be provided upon registration)\n• Costs: Free of charge \nReferent: Prof. Johannes Gräff\, EPFL \n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Workshop: International Perspectives on Defining and Measuring the Needs of Older LGBTQIA+ People
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will examine how we define and measure the distinct needs of older LGBTQIA+ people\, drawing on international perspectives and evidence of challenges such as social isolation\, mental health disparities\, barriers to care\, and discrimination\, to highlight key gaps and areas of inconsistency in how these needs are recognised.  \nWe will bring together global scholars\, care practitioners\, and community representatives for evidence sharing\, discussion\, and fostering future collaborative work. \n\nWe warmly invite researchers\, practitioners\, and community advocates to register for this workshop. Abstract submissions are also welcome from those wishing to present. Please click on the tabs above to do so. \nThe day will include: \n\nShort presentations from international researchers and practitioners\nA facilitated plenary discussion exploring what a future international ‘core needs’ framework should contain\n\nThis workshop will explore the distinct needs of older LGBTQIA+ people\, drawing on international perspectives to identify gaps in research\, policy\, and practice. Older LGBTQIA+ adults represent a growing and diverse population who face unique challenges as they age\, which can include increased social isolation\, higher rates of mental health difficulties\, barriers in accessing health and social care\, and persistent experiences of discrimination. Despite these challenges\, their needs are not well recognised within ageing\, frailty\, and palliative care research (among other areas)\, as well as in health and social care practice more broadly. \nThis workshop will be framed around a recent scoping review\, which synthesises the ways older LGBTQ+ people’s holistic needs have been recognised in research and in holistic need identification tools used in health and social care practice. The scoping review has identified both strengths and limitations in existing approaches\, revealing the lack of consensus on what constitutes the distinct and pressing needs for people who identify under this banner. We will bring together global scholars\, care practitioners\, and community representatives with a stake in this area\, for evidence sharing\, discussion\, and fostering future collaborative work. \nUpon registering you may be invited\, subject to available spaces\, to an optional e-Delphi consensus exercise that will be undertaken prior to the workshop commencing. This is aimed at developing identifying a set of ‘core needs’ for older LGBTQIA+ people with the ambition of starting to develop an international framework. \nORGANISERS \nDr Richard Green\, School of Health Sciences\, University of Surrey \nDr Milton Crenitte\, Geriatrician\, University of São Paulo \nDr Sarah Combes\, School of Health Sciences\, University of Surrey \nDr Ashok Jammigumpula\, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry\, Manipal Academy of Higher Education \nOrganised in partnership with the Centre of Excellence on Ageing \nFull programme to be announced with expected timings of 11:00-16:00 BST \nRegister

SUMMARY:Agitation in Dementia - Dr Mathias Schlögl
DESCRIPTION:In this Swiss Network for Dementia Research webinar Dr Mathias Schlögl (Chief Physician of Geriatrics at Klinik Barmelweid and Fellow at the UZH Healthy Longevity Center) will discuss the clinical challenges of agitation in dementia and behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). \nAgitation is among the most distressing and burdensome symptoms in dementia care — affecting patients\, relatives\, caregivers\, and healthcare systems alike. Yet behind agitation often lie unmet physical\, emotional\, social\, or environmental needs that remain insufficiently recognized. \nThis webinar will focus on: \n\nrecognising agitation as a clinical symptom rather than “difficult behaviour”\nidentifying unmet needs and reversible triggers\ncommunication strategies and stimulus regulation in daily practice\nnon-pharmacological interventions as first-line treatment\nthe careful and evidence-based use of psychopharmacological therapies\n\nDrawing from geriatrics\, delirium medicine\, communication science\, and clinical practice\, the session aims to provide practical and immediately applicable strategies for clinicians and healthcare professionals involved in dementia care. \nThe webinar is hosted by Dr. Tatjana Meyer-Heim (Gesundheitszentren für das Alter\, Zürich) and offers a platform for shared learning and discussion\, enabling participants to exchange insights and experiences. \n\nRegister

SUMMARY:Welfare webinar: Best practice in research animal anaesthesia
DESCRIPTION:Anaesthesia in an important refinement for research animals\, playing a critical role in minimising pain\, distress and adverse physiological effects\, while also supporting high quality and reliable scientific outputs. Poorly planned or inadequately monitored anaesthesia can compromise both animal welfare and experimental outcomes\, whereas good practice can substantially refine procedures across a wide range of species and research contexts.  \nFor this two-part webinar\, we are joined by veterinary anaesthetists from the Research Animal Anaesthesia Network (RAAN) to share their expert insights exploring principles and practical approaches to improving anaesthetic practice in laboratory animal research. Through expert-led talks and real-world examples\, the sessions will consider common challenges in research animal anaesthesia\, appropriate monitoring strategies\, and the use of injectable and inhalational agents across different species. The series will also highlight the support and resources available from RAAN to researchers and animal care staff. \nTalks will cover: \n\nWhy good anaesthetic practice is a key welfare refinement and essential for robust experimental outcomes.\nPractical approaches to addressing common challenges in research animal anaesthesia.\nWhat to monitor during general anaesthesia (and why)\, with a focus on realistic and appropriate monitoring.\nAppropriate use of injectable agents in laboratory animal anaesthesia\, including when and why they are used.\nHow RAAN supports researchers and veterinarians through advice\, resources and collaborative networks.\n\n\nDr Sarah Morgan\, iRISE\, EATRIS (European Infrastructure for Translational Medicine)\, will walk participants through key practices for effective training.\n\nRegistration and certificates of attendance\n\n\nThe content will be delivered online over two lunchtime sessions. Please register for both parts. \n\nPart one:  Tuesday 16 June (12.00 –  13.00 BST).\nPart two: Thursday 25 June (12.00 – 13.00 BST).\n\n\nPlease register for the event using an institutional email address. You will need to register for part one and part two separately using the links above. Registrations will be reviewed in line with our terms and conditions and policy on attendance at NC3Rs events (PDF). \nRegistration for each session will close 24hrs before the webinar start time.  Information submitted on the registration form will be anonymised and shared with the speakers to help inform session planning. All information submitted through the form will be deleted from our systems on Friday 26 June 2026. \nCertificates of attendance will be issued to all attendees who attend 75%+ of the session.
