Through visits with leading experts in robotics\, virtual reality\, and smart home technologies\, Bethany examined how one of the world’s fastest ageing populations is using technology to support people living with dementia. \nThe session will explore what has worked\, what has not worked\, and future directions in assistive technology\, alongside reflections on how lessons from Japan could help improve dementia care in the UK. \nBethany is a dementia researcher at the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences\, University of Oxford. DESCRIPTION:Join this 60-minute live webinar exploring practical advances in blood-based biomarker testing for Alzheimer’s disease (AD)\, with a focus on scalable and accessible quantitation of the optimal combination of biomarkers. \nDespite rapid growth in AD biomarker research\, it is not always clear which targets are the most meaningful and which measurement system best serves a given application. Quantitation methods range from highly specialized platforms requiring significant capital investment\, to simpler approaches with lower sensitivity. \nThis session will introduce a new cost-effective and sensitive (sub-pg/mL) biomarker detection platform and present findings on an AD 5-plex biomarker panel on well-characterized clinical samples. This approach has undeniably facilitated focused research\, hastened the pace of discoveries and contributed to the major breakthroughs of the last century. However\, an unintended consequence of this specialization has been the development of specialized languages and a sense of belonging within these disciplinary communities\, ultimately fostering impermeable knowledge silos across the entire scientific landscape.  \nWhile the establishment of disciplinary boundaries has played a crucial role in shaping our modern society\, there is now a recognized imperative to transcend these boundaries and confront the substantial challenges facing our globalized world. The emergence of interdisciplinary science represents a departure from the norm\, driven by courageous scientists eager to construct cultural bridges between disparate communities. Pioneers of interdisciplinary science have achieved remarkable results\, powered by their unique perspectives. However\, while the intersection at the heart of interdisciplinary science is inherently dynamic\, signifying its vitality\, the downside lies in its relatively modest scale. When extracted from their original environments\, interdisciplinary communities frequently struggle to attain the critical mass necessary for a lasting impact on our evolving society. \nSynSci26 will mark the inaugural conference set to take place in Glasgow in July 2026. With the subtitle “Meeting for a Healthier Future\,” this event aims to bring together diverse communities to collectively address the mandate of the third Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) outlined by the United Nations. Each week we host a 45 minute online session bringing researchers together to share their work\, methods\, and ideas. \nIn this session\, Dáithí Clayton will chat with Dr Claudio Di Lorito\, Senior Research Fellow\, Primary Care and Population Health\, University College London & NIHR Research Support Service (RSS) Advisor and EDI Lead\, King’s College Hub. Together they will explore the current state of queer dementia research\, with a particular focus on the experiences of trans and nonbinary people living with dementia. SUMMARY:WHO Guidelines: Reducing Dementia Risk
DESCRIPTION:Co-hosted with the World Health Organization (WHO) join Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI) for a special webinar to mark the release of the WHO’s updated dementia risk reduction guidelines. \nIn May 2017\, WHO Member States endorsed the Global action plan on the public health response to dementia\, committing to comprehensive\, multisectoral action on dementia\, including a dedicated focus on dementia risk reduction. \nIn the absence of a cure\, and access to disease modifying treatment being limited globally\, reducing dementia risk is a critical public health priority and an accessible strategy for many health authorities around the world. This is particularly pertinent given recent research suggesting that as many as 45% of dementias could be delayed or prevented. \nIn 2019\, WHO issued evidence-based guidelines on risk reduction in line with evidence that modifiable risk factors through life course interventions can delay or reduce cognitive decline and dementia. Since their publication\, the scientific evidence base has expanded\, including multidomain interventions\, population-level policies and additional risk factors. In light of strengthening evidence\, WHO developed updated dementia risk reduction guidelines. \nThis webinar will focus on the role that national associations and other stakeholders can play in the implementation of the guidelines and thereby aims to strengthen dementia risk reduction efforts globally\, accelerate implementation of the global action plan—particularly in low and middle-income countries – and promote integration with broader public health\, NCD and healthy ageing agendas. \nHosted by Acting CEO Chris Lynch\, the webinar will welcome ADI member associations and WHO representatives to reflect on the updated guidelines\, followed by a Q&A discussion. \nWe are pleased to offer AI translation for this webinar in 60+ languages. DESCRIPTION:The Centre for Chronic Disease Control\, LMIC co-lead organisation of the National Institute for Health and Care Research Global Health Research Centre for Multiple Long-Term Conditions is organising a workshop on grant writing for clinicians and public health researchers in Kochi\, Kerala\, from August 17-21\, 2026. This workshop is part of the capacity-building endeavours under the ‘Research Capacity Strengthening’ work package of the Centre. \nGrant writing is an essential skill for clinician-scientists and public health researchers who want to turn important yet unanswered research questions into funded projects. It is also important to build collaborations and sustain research activities to address priority clinical and public health research questions. In a milieu of intense competition for limited research funding\, the following skills are crucial for clinicians and public health researchers: \n\n\n\n\n(a) frame a clear clinical or public health problem;\n(b) propose a rigorous and feasible methodology/approach;\n(c) articulate clear and precise outcomes and impact and\n(d) convincingly communicate all these within the word- or page-limit is essential. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the workshop\n\n\n\n\nThis 5-day in-person workshop on grant writing will not only equip participants with the aforementioned skills but also provide an opportunity to seek guidance on their proposals from seasoned researchers with a track record of securing funding from national and international donors\, as well as to interact with grantors and grantees. The workshop will comprise a mix of short lectures\, practical exercises\, small-group work\, one-on-one mentoring sessions\, and panel discussions with funders and grant recipients. Participants will also have dedicated time to work on their proposal and receive feedback. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWho should apply?\n\n\n\n\nThis workshop is designed for early- and mid-career clinician-scientists and public health researchers based in India who are interested in applying for grants to national or international funding agencies within the next 6-12 months. SUMMARY:Research Showcase - Strengthening Family Connections Through Reminiscence
DESCRIPTION:How can families maintain meaningful connections with loved ones living with dementia after they move into a care home. And how can reminiscence help make visits more engaging and rewarding for everyone involved. \nThis livestream is part of the Dementia Researcher weekly Showcase series. Each week we host a 45 minute online session bringing researchers together to share their work\, methods\, and ideas. \nIn this session\, Connor McDonald will present findings from his PhD\, a collaborative Action Research study exploring family-centred reminiscence during care home visits for people living with dementia. Working alongside family members\, the project co-developed a new approach to using reminiscence as a way of strengthening and preserving relationships. \nThe session will explore how collaboration with families shaped the intervention\, what was learned through the co-design process\, and how reminiscence can support meaningful interaction and connection within care home settings. \nConnor is an early career researcher at the University of the West of Scotland whose research focuses on dementia care\, family involvement\, and collaborative approaches to improving the experiences of people living with dementia and those closest to them. \nAttendees can expect a thought provoking and discussion-led session with time for questions and conversation. \n\nRegister
