One of its primary objectives is to address gaps in high-priority research areas. \nGiven that neuroimaging in neurodegenerative diseases offers significant advancements in understanding pathophysiology\, diagnosing\, and treating Alzheimer’s disease\, the Fondation Alzheimer plays a pivotal role in shaping in the EU-MIND initiative. \nThe foundation actively contributes its expertise by participating in strategic vision and serving on the Scientific Committee. DESCRIPTION:AFTD is dedicated to improving the lives of families coping with FTD and to advancing research into effective treatments and a cure. The FTD Research Roundtable provides a precompetitive space for biopharmaceutical companies to partner and advance drug development for FTD\, with input from regulators and scientific leaders\, all of whom share a common interest in eliminating barriers to success in FTD clinical trials. SUMMARY:Research Showcase - Evaluating Financial Capacity in Neurocognitive Disorders
DESCRIPTION:How do clinicians determine whether someone can still manage their finances. And can biomarkers help improve the assessment of financial decision making in people with neurocognitive disorders. \nThis livestream is part of the Dementia Researcher weekly Showcase series. Each week we host a 45 minute online session bringing researchers together to share their work\, methods\, and ideas. \nIn this session\, Dr Vaitsa Giannouli will explore the clinical evaluation of financial capacity in older people living with neurocognitive disorders. Her research examines how clinicians assess financial decision making\, the challenges involved in distinguishing cognitive decline from financial vulnerability\, and the emerging role biomarkers may play in supporting these assessments. \nThe session will discuss current approaches to evaluating financial capacity\, consider how advances in dementia biomarkers could complement clinical judgement\, and reflect on the ethical and practical implications for healthcare professionals\, patients\, and families. \nDr Vaitsa Giannouli is a psychologist in the Department of Psychology at Democritus University of Thrace\, Greece. DESCRIPTION:A two-day online symposium from the American Society of Human Genetics on how artificial intelligence and machine learning are changing the way genetic and genomic discoveries get made. Thursday 24 and Friday 25 September 2026\, 14:30–20:00 UK time (9:30am–3:00pm ET). \nSixteen speakers from universities\, health systems and industry set out what AI is actually doing in human genetics right now: predicting gene expression\, interpreting non-coding variants\, classifying variants against ClinGen specifications\, and triaging RNA-seq outliers towards a diagnosis. Talks run to thirty minutes\, with a panel discussion closing each half-day\, so there is room to put questions to the speakers. \nA good deal of it will land for people working on neurodegeneration. AlphaGenome applied to rare non-coding variant discovery\, generative models forecasting individual risk across many diseases\, and AI-derived imaging phenotypes as a route to genetic discovery all sit close to problems the dementia field is working on\, from consortium-scale genomics to variant interpretation. Professor Simon Fraser (University of Southampton) will present the workstream’s recent paper on interventions to prevent and treat multiple long-term conditions and their consequences across the life course: concepts and definitions\, and lead an expert discussion panel. \nAs a public health doctor building on his past experience as a GP\, Professor Simon Fraser’s research aims to understand and address the determinants\, burden\, inequalities and adverse outcomes associated with chronic disease. SUMMARY:Inflammation in Alzheimer's and Cancer: Swanton and Tanzi
DESCRIPTION:Two of the biggest names in cancer and Alzheimer’s genetics\, Professor Charles Swanson and Professor Rudolph Tanzi\, come together for an open discussion on the role of inflammation in both diseases. Hosted online by Consilium Scientific on Thursday 1 October 2026 at 5pm (UK time). \nAlzheimer’s disease and cancer both place a heavy load on patients\, carers and health systems in an ageing population. Up to 82 million people worldwide are predicted to be living with Alzheimer’s by 2030\, and around 26 million people are diagnosed with cancer each year. Understanding the molecular changes that start these diseases and drive them forward is key to preventing them\, spotting them early and\, where possible\, treating them. \nEvidence is building that inflammation plays a central part in both. Having each built careers on the genetics of their disease\, Swanson and Tanzi have more recently turned their attention to the role of inflammation. In this conversation they will compare and contrast how it works in cancer and Alzheimer’s\, look at what might set it off\, including environmental pollution\, and share their thinking on prevention\, early detection and possible routes to new treatments. \nThe speakers\nProfessor Charles Swanson is a clinician-scientist\, Group Leader at the Francis Crick Institute and Professor of Cancer Medicine at UCL. He is known internationally for his work on cancer evolution and tumour heterogeneity\, particularly in lung cancer\, and leads the TRACERx study tracking how cancers evolve in patients. He and colleagues published a landmark paper showing how air pollutants promote lung cancer through inflammation. \nProfessor Rudolph Tanzi is Director of the Genetics and Aging Research Unit and the McCance Center for Brain Health at Massachusetts General Hospital\, and the Joseph P. and Rose F. Kennedy Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School. He discovered many Alzheimer’s genes\, including the first three\, is a member of the National Academy of Medicine\, and has co-authored more than 750 papers. DESCRIPTION:When we test new treatments or interventions for mild cognitive impairment\, what outcomes should actually matter. And are researchers measuring the things that people with MCI and their families consider most important? \nThis livestream is part of the Dementia Researcher weekly Showcase series. Each week we host a 45 minute online session bringing researchers together to share their work\, methods\, and ideas. \nIn this session\, Victoria Gabb will present work developing a core outcome set for research involving people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The project brought together the priorities of people with MCI\, family members\, researchers\, and healthcare professionals to identify which outcomes should be consistently measured in future clinical trials. \nVictoria will discuss how the core outcome set was developed\, where different groups agreed or disagreed about what matters\, and why greater consistency in outcome measurement could make it easier to compare studies and build stronger evidence. \nVictoria is a Senior Research Associate at the University of Bristol. Her research focuses on sleep and memory in MCI and early dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease\, Lewy body disease\, and Parkinson’s disease. She is also an academic co-lead for patient and public involvement and engagement within the mental health theme at the NIHR Bristol Biomedical Research Centre. \nAttendees can expect a practical and research focused session with time for questions and discussion. \n\nRegister

SUMMARY:EFAR Conference on the Biology of Aging
DESCRIPTION:The first Conference of the European Federation for Aging Research will bring together researchers from across Europe and beyond to discuss the biological processes that shape ageing\, longevity and age-related disease. \nTaking place in Cologne\, the conference aims to encourage scientific exchange\, strengthen collaboration between Europe’s ageing research communities and support early career researchers entering the field. \nAbout the conference\nThe European Federation for Aging Research was established by the German Society for Aging Research\, the Dutch Society for Research on Ageing\, Nordic Aging and the British Society for Research on Ageing. \nEFAR aims to connect researchers across Europe\, promote ageing research\, support the development of younger scientists and encourage policies that strengthen the field. Further national ageing research societies are also expected to join the federation. \nFor dementia and neurodegeneration researchers\, the meeting may be particularly relevant to those investigating the biological mechanisms that connect ageing with cognitive decline\, cellular dysfunction and age-related disease. \nProgramme\nThe scientific programme will include six main conference sessions featuring invited speakers and presentations selected from submitted abstracts. \nThe conference will open on Wednesday 14 October\, followed by two scientific sessions and an evening poster session with food and refreshments. Thursday will include three further scientific sessions and an EFAR members’ meeting. The final session will take place on Friday morning\, followed by concluding remarks and the presentation of poster prizes. \nEarly career researchers were particularly encouraged to submit abstracts for talks and posters. She will introduce SuperBigFLICA\, a semi-supervised multimodal data fusion framework that integrates amyloid PET\, tau PET\, grey matter density\, cortical thickness\, and pial surface area to identify patterns shared across imaging modalities. \nThe session will explore how these multimodal brain imaging patterns relate to cognition and neuropsychiatric symptoms\, while also discussing the opportunities and challenges of interpreting complex data fusion approaches in dementia research. \nLily Cheng is a Research Fellow at McLean Hospital in Belmont\, Massachusetts. DESCRIPTION:What can studying the brain after death reveal that conventional brain scans cannot? And could connecting highly detailed imaging directly with neuropathology help us develop better biomarkers for dementia? \nThis livestream is part of the Dementia Researcher weekly Showcase series. Each week we host a 45 minute online session bringing researchers together to share their work\, methods\, and ideas. \nIn this session\, Dr Pulkit Khandelwal will present his research using high-resolution multimodal postmortem imaging to investigate structural changes across Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. His work uses ultra-high-resolution MRI of human brain tissue alongside computational methods to examine features including cortical thickness\, regional brain volume\, and structural change. \nBy linking these imaging measurements directly with neuropathological markers including tau\, TDP-43\, α-synuclein\, neuronal loss\, and gliosis\, Pulkit’s research aims to identify structural signatures associated with specific disease processes. This approach could help bridge the gap between conventional neuroimaging and gold-standard histopathology and support the development of more precise imaging biomarkers. \nPulkit is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital. His research combines neuroimaging\, neuropathology\, and computational image analysis to better understand structural changes across Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. \nAttendees can expect a practical and research focused session with time for questions and discussion. \n\nRegister

The session covers the ground that matters for both clinical and research work\, and there is time to ask questions or bring your own experience into the discussion. \nAnna is a speech and language therapist and researcher whose work focuses on communication difficulties in dementia\, including speech and language therapy in primary progressive aphasia and the Better Conversations approach. \nON-FIRE is the Open Network for Frontotemporal dementia Inflammation REsearch\, a UK-wide network led by Dr Maura Malpetti at the University of Cambridge.
