SUMMARY:Implementation Science Masterclass 2025
DESCRIPTION:This is a two-day course organised by the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) South London for health and social care professionals\, researchers\, patients and service users who want to make sure health and care services routinely offer treatment and care that is based on the most recent research evidence. \nThe CPD accredited Implementation Science Masterclass includes lectures from world-renowned experts in the field plus guidance to help participants work more effectively on their own implementation projects. \nThe course is led by international experts in the field of implementation science including: Dr Brian Mittman\, senior research scientist at the Kaiser Permanente Southern California Department of Research. \nVenue\nThe Masterclass will take place at King’s College London\, Strand campus \nWatch a video of the highlights of the 2018 Implementation Science Masterclass. \nAbout the course\nThe first part of the course will provide general information on the field of implementation science\, including definitions and descriptions of the aims and scope of the field\, its policy/practice motivations and goals\, and its relationship to other types of health research. For the first segment\, advanced sessions will run in parallel with the general introductory lectures. The advanced sessions are for those who have more experience of using implementation science principles or who have attended previous Masterclasses. Details of the advanced sessions are to follow. \nThe second section of the course will cover the intervention issues in implementation science\, i.e. guidance in planning and designing an implementation strategy and achieving successful practice change (quality improvement) in healthcare delivery or public health settings. \nThe third segment of the course will cover the ‘evaluation’ issues in implementation science\, i.e.\, guidance for designing a comprehensive evaluation plan to measure and understand the impacts of an implementation strategy or to study naturally-occurring implementation processes\, barriers and facilitators. \nWhat will I achieve?\nFollowing the first segment of the course\, you should be able to define the field and distinguish implementation studies from other types of research\, clearly describe an implementation study you wish to conduct (in terms of its background and motivation) and justify the type of study and methodology (with reference to the status of relevant implementation-related practice and evidence). You should also be able to describe the clinical or public health intervention you wish to implement or study. \nFollowing the second part of the course\, you should be able to describe a proposed approach for assessing an implementation or quality gap\, identify its root causes and determinants\, and design a multi-faceted\, multi-level strategy for overcoming barriers to practice change. SUMMARY:Ageing and the Ethics of Dementia from the Lens of Medical Humanities
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to the next lecture in our “Phenomenology of Dementia and Aging Network” series\, taking place on Monday\, June 2\, 2025\, from 14:00 to 15:30 CET (online via Zoom). \nWe are delighted to welcome Ieva Stončikaitė (Barcelona) and Katharina Fürholzer (Koblenz)\, who will present a talk entitled: \n“Ageing and the Ethics of Dementia from the Lens of Medical Humanities: The Case of Gabriel García Márquez’s Until August” \nIeva Stončikaitė holds a PhD in Cultural & Literary Gerontology and English Studies. She is currently a Postdoc and English literature lecturer at the Department of Humanities at Pompeu Fabra University (UPF\, Barcelona). Ieva is also a member of ENAS and the research group CELCA (University of Lleida). Her areas of academic focus include literary and cultural representations of ageing\, medical humanities\, dementia and care\, age-friendly higher education and travel writing. \nKatharina Fürholzer\, PhD\, is Professor for Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of Koblenz\, Germany. She earned a Joint-PhD in Literary Studies (Universities of Münster & Ghent) and conducted postdoctoral work in Medical Ethics (University of Ulm)\, Comparative Literature (University of Pennsylvania)\, and Ageing Studies (University of Rostock). DESCRIPTION:The Australian Dementia Research Forum is the premier annual event that brings together dementia researchers\, health professionals\, policy makers\, and people living with dementia and their families and carers to discuss the latest research\, innovations\, and best practices in dementia. We are pleased to announce that next year’s Forum (ADRF2025) will be held in person in Perth\, Western Australia from 3rd to 5th June. \n​The theme for the ADRF2025 is The Future of Dementia Prevention\, Research and Care with particular focus on exciting new innovations in the field. The Forum is a meeting place for national and global experts to share the latest developments in dementia research\, care and policy and to challenge perceptions of living with or caring for someone with a dementia diagnosis. \nSix expert international and national speakers have been invited to deliver keynote addresses at ADRF2025\, on topics covering Discovery/Basic Science\, Prevention and Diagnosis and Post-Diagnostic Care. \nFor a third consecutive year\, our Continuing Education professional development sessions for medical\, health and care practitioners will be on offer.  This year\, it will be held on Day 3 of the Forum. Engage in interactive discussion with speakers at the forefront of dementia research. \nRegister to Attend \n\nSpeakers\nProfessor Tara Spires-Jones\, University of Edinburgh\, UKDRI \nProf Tara Spires-Jones\, DPhil(Oxon)\, FMedSci runs a research group studying brain changes in ageing and neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer’s disease.  Her laboratory studies the synaptic connections between neurons\, which in a healthy brain allow learning and memory. The goal of the group is to understand the mechanisms of synapse degeneration and resilience in order to develop treatments that will promote recovery of brain function.  Dr Spires-Jones received her DPhil from the University of Oxford and was an Assistant Professor at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School before returning to the UK to join the University of Edinburgh in 2013. \nIn addition to her research\, Prof Spires-Jones is passionate about communicating scientific findings to the public and policy makers; increasing the rigour and reproducibility in translational neuroscience; promoting inclusivity and diversity in science; and supporting the career development of neuroscientists.  She is a founding member of the FENS-Kavli Network of Excellence\, which works to promote the future of European Neuroscience. She served as a member of the Scottish Science Advisory Council from 2016-2019 advising the Scottish Government on science policy\, and in 2024 was elected a Fellow of the UK Academy of Medical Sciences. Tara served as President of the British Neuroscience Association from 2023-2025. \n  \nProfessor Jonathan Schott\, University College London \nJonathan Schott is a Professor of Neurology at the Dementia Research Centre\, UCL Institute of Neurology\, and an Honorary Consultant Neurologist at UCLH. His clinical practice and research are centred on the dementias with a focus on early accurate diagnosis\, and detection of pre-symptomatic Alzheimer’s disease. He leads\, amongst others a major longitudinal study exploring cognitive ageing and brain health in the MRC British 1946 birth cohort\, and a study examining the utility of blood based biomarkers for Alzheimer’s disease in NHS memory clinics. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology\, Fellow of the European Academy of Neurology\, Senior Fellow of the Higher Education academy\, MRC Investigator and an NIHR Senior Investigator. He has published more that 390 papers and co-edited the Oxford Textbook of Cognitive Neurology and Dementia. He is the recipient of the de Leon prize in neuroimaging and Bill Thies award for distinguished service from the US Alzheimer’s Association. He has a number of national and international leadership positions including chair emeritus of the International Society to Advance Alzheimer’s Research and Therapy\, chair of the Association of British Neurology Clinical Advisory Group\, member of the European Academy of Neurology Dementia Panel\, and Chief Medical Officer for Alzheimer’s Research UK. \nProfessor Carol Brayne CBE\, University of Cambridge \nProfessor Carol Brayne CBE is a Professor of Public Health Medicine and Co-Director of Cambridge Public Health Interdisciplinary Centre at the University of Cambridge. She is a medically qualified epidemiologist and public health academic. Her main research has been longitudinal studies of older people following changes over time with a public health perspective and focus on the brain. She is the lead principal investigator in the MRC CFA Studies and other population-based studies and has played a lead role in teaching and training in epidemiology and public health at Cambridge University. She is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and an NIHR Senior Investigator Emeritus. \nProfessor Henrik Zetterberg\,University of Gothenburg\, University College London\, UKDRI  \nProfessor Henrik Zetterberg\, MD\, PhD\, is a world-renowned expert in neurochemistry and fluid biomarkers for brain diseases\, particularly neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s disease. He is a Professor at the University of Gothenburg\, Sweden\, and University College London (UCL)\, UK\, and a senior consultant in clinical chemistry at Sahlgrenska University Hospital. He leads the UK DRI Fluid Biomarker Laboratory at UCL and is also a key member of the Hong Kong Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases. \nWith a background in molecular biology and medicine\, Professor Zetterberg has published over 2\,000 scientific articles and received numerous awards for his groundbreaking research. His work focuses on the development of biomarkers to diagnose and understand neurodegenerative diseases. \nProfessor Paresh Malhotra\, Imperial College London \nProfessor Paresh Malhotra is Head of the Division of Neurology at Imperial College London and Honorary Consultant Neurologist at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. He specializes in cognitive disorders caused by neurological diseases\, including Alzheimer’s disease\, stroke\, and neurodegeneration. After completing his undergraduate training at Oxford\, he undertook a PhD and clinical fellowship in cognitive neurology\, followed by specialist training and a clinical lectureship in London. \nProfessor Malhotra leads several research studies focused on the cognitive impacts of neurological conditions and the development of novel treatments. He is the lead investigator for an NIHR-funded Alzheimer’s disease trial and an Associate Member of the UK Dementia Research Institute. He also holds leadership roles in national dementia initiatives\, including as Deputy Chair of the Alzheimer’s Society Research Strategy Council. \nProfessor Katie Lunnon\, University of Exeter \nProfessor Katie is a leading expert in dementia genomics at the University of Exeter Medical School\, where she has focused her research on the role of epigenetics\, particularly DNA methylation\, in dementia. She holds a BSc in Biochemistry & Pharmacology from the University of Southampton and a PhD in Neuroscience. \nHer research investigates genomic mechanisms in dementia\, including biomarkers for early Alzheimer’s disease\, mitochondrial dysfunction\, and neuroinflammation. Professor Katie has secured £3.5 million in grant funding and received several prestigious awards\, including the 2017 Alzheimer’s Research UK Young Investigator of the Year and the 2019 Cavanagh Prize. SUMMARY:Catchup - Salon - The role of Nutrition in Dementia
DESCRIPTION:A weekly webinar to discuss careers and research topics. These sessions combine livestreams\, guest speakers\, and group online chat to exchange ideas\, challenge\, influence\, inspire\, and educate. In this session Dr Raysa El Zein from University of Westminster and Dr Vanessa De la Cruz-Góngora a GBHI Fellow and academic and the National Institute of Public Health in Mexico discuss the role ‘The role of nutrition in dementia‘. \nWe often think of dementia research in terms of genetics\, imaging\, or molecular pathways—but what about what’s on our plates? Nutrition plays a critical\, yet sometimes overlooked\, role in brain health across the lifespan. How do specific diets\, nutrients\, or deficiencies influence cognitive decline? Can what we eat slow\, or even prevent\, the onset of dementia? And how do we untangle the science from the trends to inform meaningful research and interventions? Today\, we’ll explore the growing evidence around nutrition and brain health\, and the opportunities it presents for dementia researchers to rethink prevention and care. \nSpeakers\nDr Vanessa De la Cruz-Góngora is a GBHI Fellow and researcher focused on nutrition in population at the National Institute of Public Health in Mexico. She is Professor of “Nutrition and Aging” course in the Master and Doctorate on Sciences in Nutrition program of the School of Public Health of Mexico. Her research interests on nutrition in population\, focuses on the epidemiology of micronutrient deficiencies and anemia; iron absorption and metabolism; nutrition and aging; nutrition and cognitive function in older adults; and the burden of chronic disease in populations (diabetes and stroke). \nDr Raysa El Zein is a Nutrition & Dementia researcher at University of Westminster with a focus on dietary ketosis and age related memory loss\, she is also a Public Health Nutritionist and Nutrition lecturer. Raysa believes in the power of food in disease prevention and maintenance of good quality of life. \nProgramme\nThe format of the event is a 30 minute livestream where the speakers will each present their thoughts on this topic for 10 minutes each\, the host will then ask questions and the livestream will end.
