SUMMARY:Connecting Psychosis and Dementia: Shared Brain Signatures
DESCRIPTION:Centre for Dementia Seminar: “Connecting Psychosis and Dementia: Shared Brain Signatures”: Presented by Lisa Hahn via Teams\, Postdoctoral Researcher\, Precision Psychiatry Lab\, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) Hospital\, Munich\, Germany. \nLisa Hahn completed her PhD at the Research Centre Jülich under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Jürgen Dukart\, focusing on neuroimaging and behavioural biomarkers in neuropsychiatric disorders\, including postpartum depression and behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia. Since 2022\, she has been a postdoctoral researcher in the Precision Psychiatry Lab led by Prof. Nikolaos Koutsouleris\, where her work focuses on mechanism-informed machine learning for neuropsychiatric diseases. \nLisa will present work from Professor Nikolaos Koutsouleris examining links between frontotemporal dementia and psychosis. She will then discuss her PhD research on neurotransmitter alterations in behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia\, relating structural and functional neuroimaging to normative neurotransmitter density maps using the JuSpace toolbox. Finally\, she will outline her current efforts to integrate this methodology into a machine learning framework and her plans to leverage this approach in frontotemporal dementia. \nRegister on Teams

SUMMARY:Catch-up - Salon Debate - Animal Models in Dementia Research
DESCRIPTION:Are animal models still useful in dementia research? Join Professor Michael Coleman and Dr Loukia Katsouri for a live debate on 15 Oct at 12pm and have your say in the vote. \n\nDebate Motion: \nThis House believes that animal models have outlived their usefulness in dementia research.\n\nFor decades\, animal models\, particularly genetically modified mice\, have been central to dementia research. But with growing concerns around translational failures\, ethics\, and advances in human-based models\, is it time to move on? Or do animal models still hold essential value in understanding disease mechanisms and testing treatments? \n\nSpeaker For the Motion:\nProfessor Michael Coleman is the van Geest Professor of Neuroscience in the Department of Clinical Neurosciences\, University of Cambridge. Michael leads a team that comprises exceptional researchers from around the world\, who work across a variety of disciplines in a highly collaborative environment. His research sits at the interface between basic and clinical neuroscience\, translating advances in axon and synapse protection to treat and prevent neurodegenerative diseases. \nSpeaker Against the Motion:\nDr Loukia Katsouri is a Senior Research Fellow at University College London’s Sainsbury Wellcome Centre. Her research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of tau propagation in Alzheimer’s disease\, combining molecular\, pharmacological and behavioural approaches to understand how tau drives disease spread\, neuronal death and cognitive decline. \n\nWhat to Expect\nJoin us for a live online debate where our speakers will present opposing views on the continued relevance of animal models in dementia research. The session will include: \n\n10-minute opening statements from each speaker\nModerated discussion\nAudience Q&A\nLive vote before and after the debate to see if opinions shift\n\nWhether you’re firmly for\, firmly against\, or somewhere in between\, come along and be part of the conversation. \n\n\nWatch the Recording

SUMMARY:Webinar - Social care for young onset dementia: raising social workers’ awareness
DESCRIPTION:This Young Dementia Network webinar will introduce a resource that has been co-produced to improve social workers’ understanding of young onset dementia\, so that they are in a better position to respond effectively to those living with or supporting someone with the condition. \nSocial care includes support to help someone to live their life as fully as possible and maintain independence\, dignity and control. Social workers are a key group\, with a role in carrying out assessments of what people living with dementia and their carers need and advising on care plans to meet those needs. However\, most social workers have little experience with young onset dementia and may not be aware of the way it affects people’s lives. One carer told us she had to advise the social worker\, rather than the social worker being able to advise her. \nIn this webinar\, Julie\, a former social worker who lives with young onset dementia\, will talk about her experiences of social care and the potential for improvement. Professor Jan Oyebode from the University of Bradford will provide findings from the DYNAMIC project on social workers’ awareness and experiences with young onset dementia. \nThe webinar will cover the process of co-production and the resulting co-produced resource\, designed to help raise social workers’ awareness of the needs of people living with young onset dementia. \nRegister to Attend

SUMMARY:Turning Science into Hope for Neurodegenerative Diseases
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an Alzheimer’s Research UK public lecture and discover how scientific discoveries are being transformed into promising new treatments & biomarkers in the fight against neurodegenerative diseases. \nFor decades\, progress in developing new biomarkers and treatments for these diseases has been frustratingly slow. However\, we are now entering an exciting new era\, as ground-breaking laboratory discoveries are being transformed into real-world clinical advances. \nJoin us at 6pm on Thursday 16 October for an inspiring and insightful evening. You’re warmly invited to stay for drinks and nibbles afterwards \nSpeakers:\nProfessor Masud Husain\, clinical neurologist\, neuroscientist\, and author\, will give an overview of what an ideal biomarker looks like\, and provide insights into developing biomarkers for dementia based on his own work in the field. \nDr Sam Washer\, works within the Target Discovery Institute and will speak about high-throughput methods that can be used to identify new targets for the development of novel therapies for Alzheimer’s\, and other neurodegenerative diseases. \nDr Mia Callens is a medicinal chemist working in the ARUK Oxford Drug Discovery Institute. She will provide a translational perspective on developing novel therapies once a new target has been identified. \n\n\nThursday 16th October\, 6pm – 7pm (doors open 5:30pm)\nBlakemore Lecture Theatre\, Sherrington Building\nSherrington Road\, OX1 3PT\n\nRegister to Attend
