SUMMARY:Annual Stephen Hawking MND Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The Annual Stephen Hawking MND Lectures were launched in 2017 – and are now an established and important part of the Association’s calendar. \nThe aim of the Annual Stephen Hawking MND Lecture is to bring current research in motor neurone disease to members of the multidisciplinary team and demonstrate how this might feed into their practice. Lectures are led by experts in their field\, and these engaging and popular events attract hundreds of health and social care professionals\, including delegates from across Europe. The lectures are held in the evening and online to make attendance as open as possible. \nOur thanks to the Stephen Hawking Foundation for their funding support. \nRegistrations open for the 2025 Annual Stephen Hawking MND Lecture:\nThe genetics of motor neurone disease: why does genetics matter for people living with MND?\nWe are delighted to announce that Professor Ammar Al-Chalabi\, Professor of Neurology and Complex Disease Genetics\, will deliver this year’s lecture. The session will explore the role of genes in MND\, including: \n\nthe relevance of genetics for anyone living with MND\, and their family members\, including unaffected relatives\nhow genetic testing may help predict or diagnose MND\nhow genetic knowledge is shaping treatments\nhow to discuss genetics in your practice and how to support people with and affected by MND with genetics-related decisions.\n\nThe lecture will take place as a hybrid event on 4 November 2025\, and it is open to both health and social care professionals and people with MND. It will be live-streamed online and delivered in person at the Royal Society of Medicine in London\, where attendees will also have the opportunity to join an evening reception for drinks and networking. \nPlease note that in-person places are limited due to venue capacity and will be allocated on a first-come\, first-served basis. SUMMARY:Catchup - Salon Debate - Funding Dementia: Prevent or Treat?
DESCRIPTION:Should prevention get more funding than cure in dementia research? Join Dr Sarah Page and Luis Tojo for a live debate on 5 Nov at 12pm and cast your vote. \n\nDebate Motion: \nThis House believes that prevention should receive more research funding than cure in dementia.\n\nPrevention strategies\, from lifestyle interventions to early detection\, are increasingly recognised as being important in dementia policy. But should they take precedence over efforts to develop treatments or find a cure? This debate will explore whether shifting funding towards prevention is a smart investment or a risky diversion of resources. \n\nSpeaker For the Motion:\nSarah Page is Programme Lead for Occupational Therapy at Manchester Metropolitan University. Her work centres on dementia\, later-life wellbeing\, and person‑centred occupational approaches\, especially exploring how everyday environments and routines support quality of life as dementia progresses. \nSpeaker Against the Motion:\nLuis Tojo is Senior Commercial Manager at UCLPartners\, specialising in health innovation and strategic partnerships. He works to accelerate translation of research into practice by brokering collaborations\, supporting commercialisation\, and helping navigate innovation pathways between NHS\, academia\, and industry. \n\nWhat to Expect\nJoin us for a live online debate where our speakers will present opposing views on the continued relevance of animal models in dementia research. The session will include: \n\n10-minute opening statements from each speaker\nModerated discussion\nAudience Q&A\nLive vote before and after the debate to see if opinions shift\n\nThis is your chance to explore how research priorities are set\, and whether funding dementia prevention over cure is a step forward or a step too far. \n\n\nWatch the Recording

SUMMARY:Annual Centre for Preventive Neurology Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our second annual symposium which celebrates the Centre for Preventive Neurology (CPN) at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL). The CPN is committed to improving the early detection of neurodegenerative diseases including Parkinson’s disease\, multiple sclerosis\, and dementia; exploring causal pathways\, genetic and environmental factors; testing simple interventions to prevent or delay neurological disease onset; and creating diverse clinical cohorts within East London. \nWe are honoured to host Professor Siddharthan Chandran from the UK DRI as our keynote speaker\, who will present a talk on healthy brain ageing. \nWe are delighted to showcase the cutting-edge research carried out within the CPN\, addressing themes of ‘Determinants of health and disease’\, ‘Pathways for early detection’ and ‘Personalised intervention and research design’\, including a presentation on ‘Stories from multiple sclerosis peer researchers’. Finally\, we will be holding a panel discussion of ‘Implementing research findings in the real world’. \nThis event is designed for anyone working in the health and research field. Please note that this event will not offer a hybrid option\, making it an ideal opportunity for in-person engagement and networking. Food and drinks will be provided at this event\, including breakfast pastries\, coffee\, a lunch buffet and a drinks reception. \nRegister to Attend
