SUMMARY:AI in Academic Writing and Publishing
DESCRIPTION:Community Insights: AI in Academic Writing and Publishing \nWill using AI impact my chances of publication? Who do I need to check AI policies with and how? What sections of a research paper is AI most useful for? \nArtificial intelligence (AI) is changing how research is written\, shared and reviewed. For some\, it represents an opportunity to advance research and make writing and publishing more accessible across the globe. For others\, it raises concerns about researcher integrity\, the quality of learning and the value of developing writing skills. \nAs the use of AI in academic publishing grows\, many researchers are unsure how to approach it confidently and responsibly. Questions remain about what is acceptable\, what should be disclosed and how to balance efficiency with authenticity in research communication. \nJoin senior Nature Portfolio editor Sadra Bakhshandeh (Nature Reviews Bioengineering\, Nature Biomedical Engineering)\, Springer Nature Head of Journals Policy\, Ellie Gendle and experienced researchers Kamar Ameen-Ali (Teesside University) and Wynand Lambrechts (University of Johannesburg) as they discuss current attitudes\, evolving policies and practical approaches to engaging with AI in your own work\, whether you are an early adopter\, a cautious observer or somewhere in between. \nDuring this webinar\, they will answer your questions and share practical advice to help you: \n\nUnderstand how to discover and interpret relevant AI policies\nEvaluate opportunities and risks when considering AI tools\nAvoid common pitfalls that can lead to ethical concerns or rejection\nUse AI thoughtfully to enhance rather than replace your own writing skills\n\nPlease note that any questions should be submitted during registration\, via the registration link. While we will attempt to answer as many questions as we can\, in the interest of time\, we may only be able to cover questions of common interest\, so please keep your questions relevant to the topic of AI in academic writing and publishing. \n\nRegister to Attend

SUMMARY:Webinar - Social care for young onset dementia: the financial impact
DESCRIPTION:This Young Dementia Network webinar will highlight the the role of social care in enabling families affected by young onset dementia to plan for and cope with the financial challenges. \nIt will introduce a resource that has been co-produced to help commissioners of services\, social care\, dementia services and third sector professionals to appreciate the impact of young onset dementia on finances and how vital it is to have responsive\, co-ordinated services. The aim is to motivate commissioners and all those developing and delivering local services to ensure they provide effective support for people with young onset dementia and their families to manage their financial situation. \nIn this webinar\, Elaine\, who cares for her husband Lawrence who has young onset dementia\, will talk about her experiences of the financial impact and support to manage this. Dr Catherine Quinn from the University of Bradford will provide findings from the DYNAMIC project\, centring around a summary of what we know about the financial impact of young onset dementia. \nWe will then focus on the process of co-production and the resulting co-produced resource\, designed to help raise awareness of the need for co-ordinated services to help families to manage the financial impact of living with young onset dementia. \nRegister Now

SUMMARY:Catchup - Debate - Rethinking Research Funding: Peer Review vs Lottery
DESCRIPTION:Is it time to rethink how we award research funding? Join Dr Byron Creese and Dr Subhashisa Swain for a live online debate on 19 November at 8pm GMT and cast your vote. \n\nDebate Motion: \nThis House believes that grant funding should be distributed by lottery\, not peer review.\n\nWith growing concerns about bias\, inefficiency\, and inequity in the peer review process\, some have proposed random allocation\, or partial lotteries\, as a fairer way to fund science. But would replacing peer review with chance undermine merit and rigour? Or could it free researchers from wasted effort and create more diverse\, innovative science? Join this live debate to explore whether the grant lottery is a radical gamble or a rational solution. \n\nSpeaker For the Motion:\nDr Byron Creese is a Senior Lecturer & Director of Research at Brunel University of London. His research focuses on the biological basis of neuropsychiatric symptoms in dementia and related disorders. Byron has been involved in large-scale studies and leads several multidisciplinary collaborations. He is interested in how funding structures influence scientific creativity and equity. \nSpeaker Against the Motion:\nDr Subhashisa Swain is an NIHR ARC Dementia Postdoctoral Research Fellow\, based jointly at the University of Oxford and Keele University. A physiotherapist and epidemiologist by training\, his research focuses on dementia\, ageing\, multimorbidity\, and musculoskeletal conditions. He uses large electronic health records and advanced statistical techniques to study complex health trajectories and improve care across the life course. With over a decade of research experience in both developing and developed countries\, he is also involved in postgraduate teaching and international collaborations. \n\nWhat to Expect\nJoin us for a live online debate where our speakers will present opposing views on the continued relevance of animal models in dementia research. The session will include: \n\n10-minute opening statements from each speaker\nModerated discussion\nAudience Q&A\nLive vote before and after the debate to see if opinions shift\n\nThis is your opportunity to explore whether the future of research funding lies in expert judgment\, the luck of the draw\, or perhaps a mix of the two. \n\n\nWatch the Recording

SUMMARY:Fluid and Neuroimaging Biomarker Forum
DESCRIPTION:We’re starting a new open discussion space for researchers working with fluid and neuroimaging biomarkers. The aim is simple: to talk together about the work we’re doing\, the samples and data we use\, and the challenges we face in linking biomarkers to patient condition and disease progression.\n\n\nOur first session will explore bias in biomarker research – from patient selection to sample handling and data interpretation. How do these factors shape our findings\, and what can we do to improve rigour and reproducibility? \n\nHosted by Ria Kodosaki\, this is not a formal seminar but a space for conversation. Bring papers\, examples from your own work\, or simply come to listen and connect. Together\, we can build a forum that supports collaboration and strengthens the science behind our biomarkers.\n\nJoin Us
