Feeling lonely in research? You’re not alone

Almost one in four students are lonely most or all of the time, according to new research. That is four times worse than the one in 20 adults who said they were similarly lonely in the most recent data for the general population.

Like many PhD students, I left my home country — in my case, moving from Singapore to Australia — to pursue my studies. Although being in a new place can offer great opportunities, it also poses challenges — for example, loneliness. The environment I found myself in at the Australian National University in Canberra felt so unfamiliar, and starting my demography PhD during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021 only made matters worse.

My experience has shed light on some contributors to loneliness — and how to relieve it.
