NIHR Global Health Research

The NIHR Global Health Research – Health Policy and Systems (GHR-National Institute for Health and Care Research HTA HSDRHPS) programmes are inviting applications to this new annual funding opportunity. Through this opportunity, you can choose to apply to 1 of 3 funding bands. Funding ranges from £250,000 to £4 million, over a period up to 5 years, depending on the band you apply for.

This is a 2-stage (outline application then full application) researcher-led opportunity.

See our GHR-HPS programmes page for details about the remit and scope.

Eligibility

We will consider applications in any field of applied global health policy and systems research. This includes applications from experienced health systems and health policy researchers, or those who are new to research. All applications must benefit people living in 1 or more Official Development Assistance (ODA)-eligible countries.

To be eligible to receive GHR-HPS funding, your application must demonstrate how it meets ODA compliance criteria.

You will need to outline:

  • which country or countries on the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development Development Assistance Committee (OECD DAC) list of ODA-eligible countries will directly benefit
  • how your application is relevant to the development challenges of those countries
  • how the outcomes will promote the health and welfare of people in a country or countries on the OECD DAC list

Researchers from high income countries (HICs) are not eligible to apply as a single lead applicant. Where elements of your research are undertaken outside an ODA-eligible country you must clearly state the reasons for this in your application, for example, you may need specialist expertise. You will need to consider how your research benefits ODA-eligible countries. If you know a country will be removed from the ODA-DAC list during the lifetime of your project, you will need to show how your research benefits ODA-eligible countries.

Higher education institutions (HEIs) and research institutions are eligible to apply. You can find more information on institutional eligibility in our GHR core guidance and in the outline application guidance.

If the focus of your application is applied global health research with only a minor component of health policy and systems research included, you should apply to future Global Health Research Researcher-led programmes or Research on Interventions for Global Health Transformation (RIGHT) programme opportunities instead.
