A new peer-reviewed publication, the Journal of Brain Health, has officially launched — setting out to advance global brain health research through an approach grounded in equity, inclusion, and scientific excellence.
Founded by a diverse international team, including Atlantic Fellows for Equity in Brain Health, the journal’s mission is to amplify underrepresented voices and ensure that scientific knowledge on brain health is accessible and relevant to communities worldwide.
“Equity is our foundation. Education is our driving force. The global advancement of science is our goal,” says Editor-in-Chief Professor Kathleen M. Hayden of Trinity College Dublin.
Why Now?
The editors identify three key reasons for launching the journal:
- Scientific: To bring together interdisciplinary research spanning psychology, public health, neurology, the arts, and policy, while countering bias in global datasets that exclude much of the world’s population.
- Economic: With neurological and psychiatric disorders now the leading cause of disability worldwide, the journal seeks to expand evidence from low and middle-income countries to support effective health policies.
- Equity: To remove barriers in publishing, ensuring that talented researchers—especially those in underrepresented regions—can contribute and be recognised for their work.
What the Journal Publishes
The Journal of Brain Health welcomes:
- Original research, short reports, perspectives, and editorials
- Commentaries on global events or trends shaping brain health
- Reviews and meta-analyses (by invitation)
Priority areas include brain health across the life course, the intersection of creativity and neuroscience, culturally tailored interventions, modifiable risk factors for cognitive decline, and policy-level innovations in health systems.
A Truly Global Team
Led by Professor Hayden alongside Executive Editors Dr Ara S. Khachaturian (USA) and Dr Dominic Trépel [1] (Ireland), the editorial board includes scientists, clinicians, and artists from over 20 countries — reflecting the journal’s commitment to global inclusion and collaboration.
Open for Submissions
The journal operates a not-for-profit open access model, ensuring that the ability to publish high-quality research does not depend on authors’ financial means. Articles will include plain language summaries and multilingual abstracts, supporting accessibility for diverse audiences.
Researchers at all career stages are invited to submit their work and help shape the emerging field of brain health.
