The University College London Hospitals (UCLH) / University College London (UCL) Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) provides regular PPIE training sessions for researchers. The award-winning sessions build up researchers’ skills and confidence in involving lay people in activities, including setting research priorities and designing protocols. Evaluation in BMJOpen (Yu et al. 2021) showed marked increases in researchers’ PPIE confidence after our training.
We offer 5 modules, including an introduction to PPIE and sessions on running focus groups, finding people and filling in grant applications. You can attend all 5 modules to build up knowledge progressively or you can pick the one that best suits you.
Who is the training for?
All researchers – Our training, which is currently being held remotely, is open to biomedical research researchers and staff across the UK and internationally. Please see charges for external staff below.
UCL and UCLH staff – The training is part of UCL’s Doctoral Skills Development Programme and UCL post docs earn career points for attending.
This session is for anyone new to PPI. Learn what patient and public involvement is all about, and how it can help your research. Pick up some of the basics of incorporating patient involvement into your work.

We are delighted to offer a new workshop on Patient and Public Involvement in lab-based and early clinical research. Originally designed and held for researchers funded by the NIHR Blood and Transplant Research Unit (BTRU) in Stem Cells and Immunotherapies at UCL, this interactive workshop is now open to all and consists of two interrelated parts:
Part 1: Introduction to Patient and Public Involvement & research communication
You will learn:
– About the benefits of involving Patient and Public members in research and
– How to communicate your work to a patient and public audience.
Part 2: Patient and Public Involvement in action
Part 2 brings together researchers and members of the Patient & Public Research Panel to explore the many skills and lived experience that patients, carers and members of the public bring to research. In a question and answer session, Patient & Public Research Panel members will ask questions about your research and you can ask them about their background, views on elements of your work and thoughts about including Patient and Public Involvement in your current or future research.

Please note: You need to book both parts (1 and 2) as they build on each other. If you miss Part 1, you will be not able to attend Part 2. We will send you a preparation task one week before part 1 on the training. The task will help you to prepare and to make most out of the training.

Staff at UCL, UCLH and UCL partner organisations: Free
Staff from non-profit organisations: £30 per workshop (£25 per workshop if two or more are booked together)
Staff from industry and for-profit organisations: £60 per workshop (£50 per workshop if two or more are booked together).
We reserve the right to charge all non-attendees a £50 fee if they don’t cancel 24 hours before the workshop.
