Cathy Taylor-Rubin

Name:

Dr Cathy Taylor-Rubin

Job Title:

Researcher and Speech Pathologist

Place of work / study:

Department of Cognitive Science, Macquarie University, Sydney and Senior Speech Pathologist, War Memorial Hospital Sydney

Area of research:

Primary Progressive Aphasia [1]

How is your work funded?

My research is funded by a Macquarie Research Excellence Scholarship and my clinical work is at a NSW Health and Uniting Australia public hospital.

Tell us a little about yourself:

I’ve been a speech pathologist for over thirty years and I continue to love my work. I had a break of a few years in the 80s when I had four children …all boys. When I became interested in PPA, I first did a masters by research.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself:

One of my favourite things to do is going for a run or a long walk and then jumping into the Bogeyhole at Bronte Beach Sydney.

Why did you choose to work in dementia?

My clinical work was the catalyst for me to conduct research into effective treatments for people with PPA. I saw that this particular group were under serviced and that language led dementia was poorly understood by speech pathologists, other health professionals and the general community.
