Tell us a little about yourself:
I have a background in psychology and sociology which has created an interest in research into the impacts of health, ageing and dementia at both societal and individual levels. As an Australian, I spent a large part of my research career at the National Ageing Research Institute (NARI) in Melbourne where I was involved in a broad range of research studies on ageing and services for older people.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself:
I enjoy cricket and being married to an Englishman, the Ashes is always a particularly interesting time in our household. I recently passed the Life in the UK Test and had to laugh when I had a question about what the famous cricket series between England and Australia was!
Why did you choose to work in dementia?
Studying sociology I became interested in the concept of ageism and how ageist attitudes were so entrenched and accepted in our society. Working at NARI I became more aware of the particular difficulties faced by people who had dementia and their family and friend carers. Since moving to the UK five years ago I have been working in the area of end of life care and dementia. My current fellowship from Alzheimer’s Society is concerned with the grief that carers often experience while caring for someone with dementia.
