Benefits of musical training on Implicit memory in older adults.
Tell us a little about yourself:
I am a trained musician and have been playing the tenor horn since the age of 9. I graduated from the University of Huddersfield with a degree in Music, before taking an interest in using music as a therapy. Once leaving university, I taught music to children with special needs, this is where I met a music therapist who introduced me to working with patients with dementia. Since then, I have completed a Masters in psychology and currently studying for a PhD that looks at the benefits of music training on memory. I also use music to help dementia patients and their families.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself:
play the tenor horn and had the honour of playing at Menin Gate, Belgium.
Why did you choose to work in dementia?
As I am a trained musician, I have seen first-hand the benefits music can have to the lives of those diagnosed and the families of those diagnosed with dementia. Helping others by sharing something that I love has become a fulfilling and rewarding career.
