My research interests are in machine learning and optimisation, and the interplay between them. Current research projects include quantifying uncertainty in large computational models to optimise them, using social media to enhance windstorm prediction, linking of accelerometer data to physical activity and clustering to understand dementia diagnoses.
How is your work currently funded:
Through the research councils and charities. I’m delighted to be working on new ventures funded through ARUK and DPUK.
Tell us a little about yourself:
Research interests are in machine learning, statistical pattern recognition, multi-objective optimisation and the links between them.
I’ve always been interested in the computational analysis of experimental data and have worked on data arising from low dimensional chaos in fluid systems to brain imaging data, health data and data about the earth. The revolution in the vast volumes of data we can now collect and the computational power available makes this an exciting time for what is now called a data scientist.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself:
I’m very happy to have just completed my first (and possibly last) ultra-marathon: the Fellsman: 61 miles and 11000 feet of ascent.
Why did you choose to work in dementia?
With an ageing population, it’s an important area that raises many interesting and tractable problems for machine learning – somewhere that I might be able to help make a difference. It has become personally more urgent as my father died in the grip of dementia and my mother has Alzheimer’s.
