Profile – Rui Mauricio

Name:

Rui Mauricio

Job Title:

Research Manager

Place of work / study:

Alzheimer’s Research UK (ARUK)

What does your role involve:

The Research team at ARUK is responsible for the grant schemes and strategic funding initiatives ranging from biomedical dementia research to the research and development of therapeutics. My role involves developing a strategy for increased engagement with clinicians, which aims to bridge the gap between basic and applied research and accelerate the developing of treatments. I am also involved in engagement activities with the UK Dementia Research Institute centres.

I have been working on open science for a couple of years now, at different organisations, and I sit on the AMRC Open Research Advisory Board as representative of ARUK.

Tell us a little about yourself:

I am Portuguese and moved to the UK eight years ago to study and pursue a research career. After completing a PhD in biochemistry I decided to choose a different path, and began a career in science policy. I worked at UNESCO on R&D policy in developing countries, then Rand Europe where I was involved in an open science monitor for the European Commission, and in 2017 I joined ARUK.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself:

Up until the age of 7 I used to recite the lines from the first few scenes of The Lion King whenever I was in public. Even if no one was paying attention. I still know them, but I keep it to myself now.
