Tell us a little about yourself:

I am coming up to 9 months into my PhD. Before my PhD, I did my Masters (Clinical Psychology) and Undergrad (Psychology) at Swansea, it’s a really amazing place to be. I feel really lucky because I couldn’t have chosen a better PhD myself, which I’m sure will help me out down the road for the long nights and looming deadlines.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself:

I play roller derby here in Swansea and just skated a marathon for charity.  I’m also learning how to silversmith!

Why did you choose to work in dementia?

It sort of chose me! Before my PhD, I was fascinated with Brain Injury research. I published a paper in Frontiers in Psychology which looked at using Positive Psychotherapy to build Wellbeing for people with Traumatic Brain Injury. I also worked as a Brain Injury Rehabilitation Support Worker for several years. I applied for a PhD relating to TBI, but I just missed out.

Shortly after, my PhD (sleep and dementia [1]) popped up. I am absolutely obsessed with sleep (long history of rubbish sleep) and I was in the process of trying to create my own PhD about sleep, so that was very fortunate. I was concerned that I didn’t have much experience in Dementia, but I realised there’s lots of overlap between TBI and Dementia research. The main parallel is that the research surrounding them has a direct positive impact on people’s lives, which was one of the most rewardable elements of writing my dissertation. The rest is history, and I’m hooked!
