Tell us a little about yourself:

Eduardo Zimmer is an Assistant Professor at Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Brazil. He holds a bachelor’s in Pharmacy, a master’s, and Ph.D. in Biochemistry from UFRGS (Brazil) with a 2-years period as a Ph.D. exchange student at McGill University, Canada. After a short period of postdoctoral training at the Department of Biochemistry at UFRGS (Brazil), Dr. Zimmer established his laboratory at the Department of Pharmacology, UFRGS (Brazil). Dr. Zimmer won multiple individual awards, including the Best Brazilian Ph.D. thesis (2016). In addition, he has been nominated to the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (2019) and has become an Instituto Serrapilheira grantee (2020). His laboratory focuses on understanding the cellular origins of Alzheimer’s disease, with a particular interest in astrocytes.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself:

My two sisters and my brother are also researchers. So, we are a family of scientists.

Why did you choose to work in dementia?

The brain is the most mysterious organ in the human body. Why and how it becomes dysfunctional is an unsolved question.

What single piece of advice would you give to an early career researcher?

Follow your dreams and always dream big. If you genuinely believe in the science you are doing; you are probably in the right direction.

What book are you reading right now? Would you recommend it?

Crooked Plow [2] by Itamar Vieira Júnior. Yes, I strongly recommend.
