Dr Fiona Calvert

Name:

Dr Fiona Calvert

Job Title:

Science Communications Officer

Place of work / study:

Alzheimer’s Research UK

Tell us a little about yourself:

I completed my PhD in early 2020 at the Wellcome Sanger Institute where I used genetic data to understand microglia and their role in Alzheimer’s disease. During my PhD I became passionate about science communication and became a UK Producer for The Story Collider – a non-profit organisation that shares true personal stories about science.

After completing my PhD, I wanted to stay connected to dementia research but knew that I would prefer to work outside of the lab! Being a Science Communications Officer at Alzheimer’s Research UK is the perfect blend of the things I love – I get to spend my days talking and writing about dementia research!

Tell us a fun fact about yourself:

I’m a huge Arsenal fan, which to be honest a lot of the time isn’t so fun!

Why did you choose to work in dementia?

I became fascinated about the complexity of the brain while studying my undergraduate degree. Alzheimer’s disease is like a giant puzzle and I really enjoy how dementia research encompasses so many different areas of biology: neuroscience, immunology, the microbiome, genetics as well as social policy and psychology.
