How is your work funded?

Both the scholarships of my regular PhD work plus the one that I’m using to be abroad were granted by the main Brazilian Government research funding agency, Coordination of Superior Level Staff Improvement – (CAPES).

Tell us a little about yourself:

I have been working with Dementia research since 2018. When I entered Medical school, I soon joined Eduardo Zimmer’s lab as a research assistant, becoming so involved later I got the opportunity to start my PhD concomitantly. Since then, I have worked in several projects, like metabolic networks in Alzheimer’s and comparative studies of diagnostic criteria.  Since AAIC19 I have been super involved with ISTAART, which brought lots of good things my way, such as presenting a paper by Kaj Blennow and team at the Journal Club, which led me to come to Gothenburg. I’d say now my main research interest is to understand how can biomarkers be rationally interpreted in research so they can ultimately be rationally implemented into clinical practice.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself:

I love listening to the radio, mainly news and sports stations, even when at home.

Why did you choose to work in dementia?

I always had an irrational interest for the brain. After my first exposures to Neurology, Neuroscience, Psychiatry, I soon felt connected with the challenge of being a part of a battle against these incurable diseases who rob people from their self-determination. Having seen closely how my grandmother developing dementia impacted her life and ours as caregivers added even more meaning to the decision of joining the field.
