What does your role involve?
I am an Alzheimer’s Society Research Network [2] volunteer, which means I inform in the Society’s research funding programme. I am involved in reviewing grant applications and monitoring our chosen grants as well as getting involved in lots of dementia research. The benefits of being part of this includes meeting people who share the same passion. I’m privileged to also be in touch with some researchers who stay in contact and would reach out for different types of support.
Tell us a little about yourself:
I was a carer for my late mother who lived with vascular dementia for nearly 15 years. She was cared for at home right through the journey, which included many different stages of the condition. I tried to keep things as normal as I could, leading the support package through to end of life.
This has become my drive since 2009. I always want to encourage people to share experiences and seek support. This has led to a wide range of PPI invitations and speaker requests across many different organisations.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself:
Right from my early days, I became heavily involved in volunteering as a child patient due to family connections with health services. I was forever bandaged and made up for displays and training.
