The University of Houston is recruiting a tenure-track Assistant Professor in neuroimmunology, working on immune mechanisms in neurodegeneration, as a Presidential Frontier Faculty appointment
The Department of Biology and Biochemistry is hiring into the Presidential Frontier Faculty programme, a university-wide initiative to recruit scholars into high-priority fields. The timing matters: the search coincides with the imminent launch of the Dementia Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (DPRIT), a $3 billion state-funded initiative for Alzheimer’s, dementia and related brain disorders, and whoever takes this post will be well placed to compete for that funding.
About the role
The department is looking for a scientist whose research examines the role of the immune system in nervous system function, dysfunction or neurodegeneration. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Neuroimmune interactions
- Neuroinflammation
- Glial biology
- Immune mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative diseases
- The development of immune-based therapeutic approaches
Beyond running an independent research programme, the successful candidate is expected to collaborate within the department and across the wider neuroscience and biomedical research community, contribute to the university’s strategic work on neurodegenerative diseases including the developing UH MIND (Multidisciplinary Institute for Neuroscience and Dementia), and commit to excellence in graduate and undergraduate teaching and mentoring.

- A PhD or equivalent doctoral degree in a relevant field
- A strong record of scientific achievement and publication
- The potential to establish an innovative, independent and externally funded research programme
- A demonstrated commitment to collaborative and interdisciplinary research
What the department offers
Laboratory space within the Science and Engineering Research Center (SERC), access to advanced core facilities, and collaboration across the university and with nearby institutions including the Texas Medical Center, of which the University of Houston is a member. Salary and rank are commensurate with experience and education.
