The ALBORADA Drug Discovery Institute (ADDI), part of the University of Cambridge CIMR Division of Translational Medicine (, is seeking an neuroscientist experienced in cell and molecular biology to play a leading role in its established drug discovery team working on dementia. The ADDI is part of a network of world-class Drug Discovery Institutes, funded by Alzheimer’s Research UK, forming the Alzheimer’s Research UK Drug Discovery Alliance. The work of the ADDI at Cambridge is aimed at validating new drug targets and identifying potential new drugs for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease as well as other forms of neurodegeneration.

The successful candidate will lead a team of cellular and molecular biologists working on target validation and supporting drug discovery programmes. They will develop and execute a range of functional assays in cells, including neuronal models, to identify and validate novel targets/mechanisms of potential therapeutic value against neurodegenerative disease pathologies. The successful candidate will be expected to provide scientific leadership, experimental and intellectual input across a range of drug discovery and target validation projects as well as supervise junior staff. The position demands an enthusiastic and proactive mindset, along with a demonstrable ability to troubleshoot and optimise methods and an aptitude for data analysis.

The successful candidate will be required to have the following skills and experience:

  • A PhD in Biology, Pharmacology or a neuro-related discipline (or equivalent experience) and significant relevant experience in an industrial or academic environment.
  • Experience in working with neuronal models.
  • Significant experience in the manipulation and analysis of gene/protein function in mammalian cells, including gene transfer/RNAi
  • Experience with imaging and microscopy
  • Knowledge of handling large data sets from 96 and 384 well formats
  • An ability to provide scientific leadership and supervise junior staff.
  • Willingness to be intellectually involved in a range of drug discovery and target validation projects.

Additional desirable attributes would be:

  • Background in neurodegenerative disease or the cerebral vascular system.
  • Experience implementing or supporting imaging assays on a high content imaging platform.
  • An understanding of machine learning.

Working with chemists and other biologists in a stimulating and collaborative environment with leadership opportunities, the successful candidate will also be encouraged to contribute to implementing new technologies and processes and develop ideas for new therapeutic strategies and targets.

This post is full time, however we would consider applicants who wish to work flexibly or for a minimum of 0.6 FTE.
