Research Equipment Grant for Biomedical Research

UK Research and Innovation UKRI LogoUKRI Research Equipment Grant Funding opportunity for mid-range capital equipment will enable and enhance research across MRC’s scientific areas.

You must be employed at a UK research organisation eligible for MRC funding.

All applications must have a duration of seven months with a start date of 1 June 2027.

A limit of two applications per research organisation is in place for this funding opportunity, unless otherwise notified by MRC.

You can request a contribution of between £200,000 to £1 million. MRC will fund up to 100% of the full economic cost (FEC). The total cost may be higher, with the remainder met by other contributions.

This funding opportunity is open to organisations with standard eligibility. Check if your organisation is eligible.

Who is eligible to apply

To be eligible to apply for this UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) funding opportunity you must be a researcher or research technical professional employed by an eligible research organisation.

Demand management

Research organisations may only submit two applications to this funding opportunity, unless their research office has been otherwise notified by MRC. We would encourage organisations to discuss and prioritise their submissions as soon as possible. Potential applicants are advised to contact their research office at the earliest opportunity.

You are only permitted to be project lead on one application per funding opportunity; however, you can still be involved in an application submitted to the same funding opportunity when you are involved as project co-lead.

Building on the Technician Commitment UKRI action plan, we particularly encourage applications from research technical professionals as either project lead or project co-lead.

Applicants based within MRC Units, including The Gambia at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), or MRC/UVRI (Uganda Virus Research Institute) and LSHTM Uganda Research Unit are eligible to apply as project lead.

Resubmissions

We will not accept uninvited resubmission of applications that were submitted after 1 August 2026 to MRC, the rest of UKRI or any other funder. An uninvited resubmission is an application that was previously unsuccessful and has been submitted again without being invited by MRC. This includes applications that are unchanged, minimally revised, or substantially the same as the original submission. Uninvited resubmissions will be rejected.

You should contact us if you are unsure whether your application is a resubmission. Find contacts in the ‘Contact details’ section.

Resubmissions from previous rounds of the funding opportunity are eligible but are included in the organisation application limit.

Who is not eligible to apply

You are not eligible to apply if:

  • you are based at an international research organisation (exceptions are MRC Units, The Gambia and Uganda Research Unit)
  • you are intending to be project lead on more than one application
  • your application is in addition to the two applications allowed by your research organisation (unless otherwise notified by MRC)

Contact ca@mrc.ukri.org if you are unsure of eligibility.

International researchers

As MRC is a lead funder for this funding opportunity, international researchers can apply as ‘project co-lead (international)’.

Project co-leads (international) must make a major intellectual contribution to the design or conduct of the project. Their contribution and added value to the research should be clearly explained and justified in the application (see section ‘Applicant and team capability to deliver’).

Read the UKRI project co-lead (international) policy for more details. Contact ca@mrc.ukri.org if you are uncertain about eligibility.

You should include all other international collaborators as project partners.

Applications should clearly state where the equipment will be located.

Equality, diversity and inclusion

We are committed to achieving equality of opportunity for all funding applicants. We encourage applications from a diverse range of researchers.

We support people to work in a way that suits their personal circumstances. This includes:

  • career breaks
  • support for people with caring responsibilities
  • flexible working
  • alternative working patterns

UKRI can offer disability and accessibility support for UKRI applicants and grant holders during the application and assessment process.

Demand management

Demand management is being applied to this funding opportunity. Further details are provided in the ‘Who can apply’ section.

Aim

To build world class laboratory capability that will enable research to deliver MRC’s mission.

Scope

The primary purpose of the equipment must be biomedical research within MRC remit.

Applications from all scientific areas within MRC remit are eligible. Relevance to MRC priority areas is particularly encouraged.

Applications may be for new capability or replacement equipment for existing capability. In the case of the latter, you are encouraged to specify any additional new capacity or capability provided by the replacement.

Applications for second-hand or beta-testing equipment are also permitted, if you can demonstrate how you are addressing any associated risks with increased chance of equipment failure.

Requests for contributions to the following are outside the scope of this UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) funding opportunity:

  • very large facilities
  • the purchase of equipment that constitutes normal elements of a well-founded laboratory (including centrifuges, fridges and other sample storage, and incubators)
  • buildings and other types of infrastructures
  • establishment of all computing platforms (for example, high performance computing clusters) for data analysis or data storage

Applications must consist of a single piece of capital equipment, although this can include equipment that requires assembly or involves several components (not necessarily physically linked), provided they constitute a single technology platform.

If you plan to request several components that could constitute a platform, you must approach us for permission before applying. Contact ca@mrc.ukri.org providing a short one-page document outlining how your application constitutes a single platform.

Duration

The duration of this award is seven months. Projects must start by 1 June 2027 and must end by 31 December 2027.

Funding available

The FEC of your application can be up to £1 million.

MRC will fund 100% of the FEC.

Up to £14 million in total will be available for this funding opportunity.

What we will fund

Applications may seek the cost of capital equipment over £200,000, (including VAT, if payable) requested under the ‘Exceptions – equipment’ heading only.

A MRC contribution of up to £1 million at 100% of the FEC can be requested. The MRC contribution requested must be over £200,000. The total item cost may be higher than £1 million if the additional cost is met by other contributions.

You must obtain quotes for the equipment, from multiple suppliers where possible, and use these as the basis for your costings. The panel will generally expect that you should not use list prices where discounts are typically available. By obtaining quotes you will be able to ensure that your costings are accurate, realistic and present good value for money for the requested equipment. If there is a sole supplier or fewer than three quotes, this should be explained as part of the resources and cost justification.

Costs such as initial installation or service maintenance contracts can be included if they are one-off costs and part of the manufacturer’s offer. These costs should be included in the equipment quotation.

Service maintenance contracts up to five years in duration may be included but the contract cost must be paid by 31 December 2027. Should the expected length of the contract exceed five years in duration, then the cost included in the application should be reduced on a pro rata basis to fit within the conditions as stated.

We expect that organisations will make longer term arrangements to ensure appropriate ongoing support over the lifetime of the equipment. Separately negotiated service contracts are not eligible for this funding opportunity.

What we will not fund

We will reject applications in certain areas without consultation, these are:

  • applications that request any other costs apart from capital equipment funding and associated maintenance costs
  • separately negotiated service contracts
  • equipment valued below the £200,000 (VAT included) threshold. Equipment should exceed this threshold and equipment prices should be based on standard higher education institution discounted prices and not the list price
  • applications that cannot complete procurement and spend by the expected end date of 31 December 2027
  • requests for equipment that is scheduled for market release after the funding opportunity closing date
  • principal beneficiaries outside the UK (except for eligible MRC Africa units)
  • principal beneficiaries outside biomedical research
  • establishment of generic computing platforms (for example, high performance computing clusters) when the intended use extends largely beyond a small number of specific projects or research areas that are within the MRC remit
  • requests for buildings or other very large facilities
  • requests for the purchase of equipment that constitutes normal elements of a well-founded laboratory (for example, centrifuges, fridges and incubators)
  • applications for the development of new technology are outside of the scope of this opportunity and will be rejected, although the use of new or emerging technologies is encouraged
  • applications to develop software packages
  • applications of the same nature that have also been submitted to other funders at the same time (including research council funding opportunities)
  • uninvited resubmission of applications that were submitted after 1 August 2026 to MRC, the rest of UKRI or any other funder

Additions

Provide any further details relevant to your application. This section is optional and can be up to 500 words. You should not use it to describe additional skills, experiences or outputs, but you can use it to describe any factors that provide context for the rest of your R4RI (for example, details of career breaks if you wish to disclose them).

You should complete this section as a narrative. Do not format it like a CV.

The roles in funding applications policy has descriptions of the different project roles.

Your organisation’s support

Word limit: 500

Provide details of support from your research organisation.

What the assessors are looking for in your response

Provide a Statement of Support from your research organisation detailing why the proposed equipment is needed. This should include details of any additional support that might add value to the investment.

  • office address or web link
Guidance

Additional support can include where the equipment will be housed, it’s local environment, training, services costs and staff time to run and maintain the equipment.

Project partners

Add details about any project partners contributions. If there are no project partners, you can indicate this on the Funding Service.

A project partner is a collaborating person or organisation who will have an integral role in delivery of the infrastructure investment. This may include direct contributions for example cash, donated equipment and resources, or staff seconded to the project, or indirect and in-kind contributions for example vendor discounts. Project partners may be in industry, academia, third sector or government organisations in the UK or overseas, including partners based in the EU.

A project partner is not anyone in your core team or anyone from your organisation or any of the other organisations represented by core team members.

Add the following project partner details:

  • the organisation name (searchable via a drop-down list or enter the organisation’s details manually, as applicable)
  • the project partner contact name and email address
  • the type of contribution (direct or in-direct) and its monetary value (discount to the list-price of equipment from project partners that are equipment vendors)

If a detail is entered incorrectly and you have saved the entry, remove the specific project partner record and re-add it with the correct information.

If there are specific circumstances where project partners do require funding for minor costs such as travel and subsistence, these project partner costs should be claimed and justified within the resources and costs section of your application.

Important information

If you are adding a project partner to this section, you must ensure they provide you with a letter or email of support and you upload it to ‘Project partners: letters or emails of support’. A written quotation from your preferred vendor that includes any discount from list price and a commitment to supply the proposed equipment by 31 December 2027 should be included in the letter.

For audit purposes, UKRI requires formal collaboration agreements to be put in place if an award is made.

Project partners: letters (or emails) of support

Word limit: 10

Upload a single PDF containing the letters or emails of support from each partner you named in the ‘Project partners’ section. These should be uploaded in English or Welsh only.

What the assessors are looking for in your response

If you do not have any project partners, you will be able to indicate this in the Funding Service.

What supporting statements we are looking for

We are looking for you to provide letters or emails of support from all your identified project partner(s).

What supporting statements we are not looking for

We don’t want any other letters (or emails) of support, from people who are not your identified project partner(s), such as those simply expressing general support for your project. If these are included by you, they will be ignored by us and will not be used in the assessment process.

Important information

You should only provide letters or emails of support from people you have identified in the ‘Project partner’ section of your application, who will have an integral role in your proposed research. Vendors should be included as project partners.

What each project partner letter or email of support must include

Each project partner letter or email you provide should:

  • include the name of the project partner organisation and contact information
  • explain the project partner(s) commitment to the project
  • explain the value, relevance, and possible benefits of the proposed contribution, to them
  • describe any additional value they will bring to the project
  • not exceed two sides of A4 per project partner
  • include the received quotation for the proposed equipment

Project partner(s) letters and emails of support are not required to be on headed paper or include handwritten signatures (electronic signatures are acceptable).
The Funding Service will provide document upload details when you apply.

Project partner(s) from industry or a company

Industry or company project partners other than equipment vendors are required to download and complete the industry or company letter of support template.

Agreement with your project partner(s)

Ensure you have prior agreement from project partners so that, if you are offered funding, they will support your project as indicated in the ‘Project partners’ section.

For audit purposes, UKRI requires formal collaboration or other agreements to be put in place if an award is made.

Data management and sharing

Word limit: 1,500

How will you manage and share data collected or acquired through the proposed research?

What the assessors are looking for in your response

Provide a data management plan which should clearly detail how you will comply with MRC’s published data management and sharing policies, which includes detailed guidance notes.

Provide your response in the text box following the headings in the MRC data management plan template. You are not required to upload the document to your application.

The length of your plan will vary depending on the type of study being undertaken:

  • population cohorts’ longitudinal studies, genetic, omics and imaging data, biobanks, and other collections that are potentially a rich resource for the wider research community: maximum of 1,500 words
  • all other research, less complex: the plan may be as short as 500 words
Guidance

You should demonstrate you understand the data challenges the new equipment will present and how you will mitigate these. The expert panel includes data experts who will consider likely data requirements and you provide a plan based on realistic calculations of the data requirements.

Ethics and responsible research and innovation (RRI)

What are the ethical and RRI considerations, implications and issues relating to the proposed work? If you do not think that the proposed work raises any ethical or RRI issues, explain why.

What the assessors are looking for in your response

Demonstrate that you have identified and evaluated:

  • the relevant ethical and RRI considerations, including both the research or topic area itself and the design and delivery of the project
  • the wider implications of the proposed work, and how you will maximise the positive societal, environmental, and economic benefits arising from the project, whilst minimising unintended negative impacts, such as research misuse or accidental harm
  • how you will manage these considerations throughout the lifecycle of the project

Please refer to the UKRI position statement on funding ethical research and Responsible innovation for more information around our expectations on ethical and responsible research and innovation.

Resources and cost justification

Word limit: 1,250

What will you need to procure to deliver the proposed equipment and how much will it cost?

What the assessors are looking for in your response

You should enter a single equipment cost that represents the total request from MRC. To calculate this, use the Cost Summary table (DOCX, 50KB). This should be inclusive of VAT if applicable and net of discounts and contributions from elsewhere (value in Row E of the Cost Summary table under Supplementary tables).

Costs should be requested at 100% full economic cost and added under ‘Exceptions–Equipment’ rather than ‘Directly Incurred–Equipment’.

Justify the application’s more substantial costs, in particular:

  • project staff
  • all facilities and infrastructure costs
  • all resources that have been costed as ‘Exceptions’
  • details of the equipment requested
  • details of the service or maintenance service requested (if applicable)
  • details of any cash contributions to the equipment from other sources reasons for choosing a quoted equipment (versus other quotes)
  • reasons for requesting a particular specification of equipment or a particular manufacturer
Guidance

The figures in the Cost Summary table must match the requested funds requested from MRC (Value in row E). The value in row E should equal A + B + C – D.

You can request costs associated with reasonable adjustments where they increase as a direct result of working on the project. For further information see Disability and accessibility support for UKRI applicants and grant holders. Where a funding limit is imposed on the opportunity, requested costs for reasonable adjustments may exceed the maximum funding amount.

The panel will expect you to exclude list prices where discounts are typically available. The panel will consider whether the equipment will be used at optimal capacity and capability.

Assessors are not looking for detailed costs or a line-by-line breakdown of all project resources. Overall, they want you to demonstrate how the resources you anticipate needing for your proposed work:

  • are comprehensive, appropriate, and justified
  • represent the optimal use of resources to achieve the intended outcomes
  • maximise potential outcomes and impacts

Related applications

Word limit: 500

Is this application related to another application to MRC or other funding organisation?

What the assessors are looking for in your response

If your application is not related to another, you will be able to indicate this in the Funding Service.

If your application is related to another, state your previous reference number and explain how this new application is related to the other application.

If the related application was submitted to another funder, you should identify the name of the funder and when you applied.

Resubmissions

Going forward, we will not accept uninvited resubmission of unsuccessful applications that were submitted after 1 August 2026 to MRC, the rest of UKRI or any other funder. Uninvited resubmissions will be rejected.

If your unsuccessful application was submitted before 1 April 2026 to a previous funding round, this is eligible but included in the organisation application limit.

Where relevant confirm the details of your previous application and describe how this application differs

Duplicate submissions

You can only apply to us at the same time as another funder to support the same equipment purchase if the other funder is outside of UKRI, also allows duplicate submissions and the application is time sensitive. You must explain the time sensitivity of the proposed equipment based on its urgency or feasibility and justify why a duplicate submission is necessary.

The end of a grant or contract is not considered justification for duplicate submission. If there isn’t a clearly justified time sensitive research need, your application will be rejected.

For more information see Submitting your application.

Trusted Research and Innovation (TR&I)

Trusted Research and Innovation is the protection of the UK’s intellectual property, sensitive research, people, and infrastructure from potential theft, misuse, and exploitation.

Organisations receiving UKRI funding are obliged to act in line with UK government legislation. They are also expected to undertake appropriate due diligence assessments of organisations involved in research partnerships, collaboration agreements, and commercial contracts.

You will be asked about:

  • which areas of the National Security and Investment (NSI) Act your project relates to
  • who you intend to collaborate with and how
  • if your project requires an export control licence

Your answers may affect the T&Cs of your funding agreement if you are successful. We may use your answers to determine that our current T&Cs are sufficient or if additional T&Cs are required.
