The NIA is recruiting a Director for the Center for Alzheimer’s and Related Dementias, a tenure-eligible senior investigator leading translational dementia work
The Center for Alzheimer’s and Related Dementias (CARD) sits within the intramural research programme at the National Institute on Aging, and is run jointly with the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. Its remit is translational: to start, accelerate and support research into Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias that leads to better understanding, better treatments and ultimately cures.
About the role
The Director leads a group of intramural investigators and recruits others to join them, coordinating collaborative, multidisciplinary projects with scientists at institutions across the United States and internationally. The post carries an annual budget of around $26 million and a staff of roughly 86 (11 full time equivalents and 75 non-FTE posts), with both expected to grow through future recruitment. Scientific leadership, personnel management and experience of running complex budgets are all required.
About you
Essential criteria:
- A PhD, MD, MD/PhD or equivalent doctoral degree in neuroscience or a related field
- Long-standing research experience in the causes or treatment of neurodegenerative disease, including AD/ADRD, through genetics, molecular and cellular biology, animal models, neuropathology, neuroimaging biomarkers, or patient-oriented research and clinical trials
- A strong track record of developing testable hypotheses about the biological pathways behind causal associations in neurodegenerative disease, with an emphasis on AD/ADRD
- A strong record of peer-reviewed funding in those areas, and an outstanding publication record in relevant fields
- Demonstrated ability to stimulate and lead collaboration between scientists at multiple institutions
Desirable criteria:
- Experience working with genetic, genomic and large-scale clinical data, particularly datasets available in the public domain

Salary is set against experience and accomplishments, a full civil service benefits package may be available, and NIA may be able to contribute towards relocation costs. The post is subject to a background investigation and to a public financial disclosure report before the appointment takes effect. Anyone who studied outside the United States will need their qualifications evaluated for equivalence by an accredited organisation before the start date.
