Research Showcase – How Art Can Support Brain Health in Dementia Care

Can the design of a care environment actively support people living with dementia. And what if artwork could do more than brighten a room by helping people navigate, engage with, and better understand the spaces around them.
This live-stream is part of the Dementia Researcher weekly Showcase series. Each week we host a 45 minute online session bringing researchers together to share their work, methods, and ideas.
In this session, Sharron T. Mida will present her work on Art-Based Technologies Delivering Therapies for Aged-Care Residents Living with Cognitive Decline. Drawing on principles of neuroaesthetics, saliency, and perceptual neuroscience, she will explore how carefully designed visual environments can support attention, orientation, and emotional wellbeing for people living with dementia.
Rather than viewing art as decoration, Sharron proposes a new approach in which art becomes a continuous, non-pharmacological therapeutic system integrated into the built environment. The session will explore how environmental design can help the ageing brain interpret and navigate space more effectively while enhancing quality of life in residential care.
Sharron T. Mida is Founder and Creative Director of Tailored Art Works. Her work brings together art, neuroscience, and environmental design to develop innovative approaches that improve the everyday experiences of people living with cognitive decline.
