Increasing Black Communities Involvement in Research

Why are Black communities underrepresented in dementia research? And what can researchers do to build trust, strengthen relationships and create more meaningful opportunities for involvement?

This livestream is part of the Dementia Researcher weekly Showcase series. Each week we host a 45 minute online session bringing researchers together to share their work, methods and ideas.

In this session, Queenette Anwuluorah will explore how dementia research can better engage Black communities, examining the barriers that may prevent people from participating in research and the importance of developing approaches that reflect different cultural experiences, needs and priorities.

The session will consider the role of Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) and coproduction in building more inclusive research practices. Queenette will discuss how researchers can move beyond traditional recruitment approaches, develop meaningful relationships with communities and create opportunities for people to contribute to the design and delivery of dementia research.

The discussion will also consider why representation matters, how researchers can address mistrust and structural inequalities, and what practical steps might help ensure dementia research is more accessible, relevant and responsive to the communities it aims to serve.

Queenette Anwuluorah is a PhD student at the University of Wolverhampton. Her research interests include patient and public involvement, coproduction and increasing the engagement of Black communities in dementia research.

Attendees can expect a practical and research focused session with time for questions and discussion.
