Global Health Research Cohort Academic Development Award

New NIHR LogoThis funding opportunity supports cohorts of NIHR Global Health Research Academy Members, primarily focussed in Low and Middle Income Countries (LMICs), to undertake training and career development activities.

This scheme enables NIHR GHR Programme Training Leads, Co-Leads, Global Health Research Professors (GHRPs) and Global Advanced Fellows (GAFs) to apply for funding to deliver training and career development activities for NIHR GHR Academy Members.

Through this award, NIHR GHR Academy Members will be able to:

  • gain exposure to multi-disciplinary working
  • build networks with leading experts
  • provide peer support
  • collaborate with other GHR programmes and foster cross-NIHR GHR working

Strategic themes

The GHR CADA is open to all GHR Programmes with a contract end date after 31 December 2026. The GHR programme focus areas announced in January 2026 do not apply to this award.

How much funding is available?

You can apply for up to £30,000 to deliver a programme of activities. These activities should support NIHR GHR Academy Members on your programme and, where training needs are alike, members from other NIHR GHR Programme awards.

The activities delivered through the CADA will be unique to each GHR programme. You must complete an academic development training needs analysis or an assessment of the LMIC-based cohort of the NIHR GHR Programme. This should inform your proposed programme of activities.

Funding can cover:

  • training courses
  • travel, accommodation and subsistence for the delivery of the programme
  • speaker and facilitator costs
  • operational delivery costs such as venue hire, internet connectivity and printing

All costs should be appropriately justified within the application. All funding must comply with our GHR ODA financial guidelines.

Who is eligible to apply?

Visit the ‘Who can apply?’ section on the NIHR GHR CADA page for full eligibility information. To apply, you must be a Training Lead, Co-Lead, GAF or GHRP in NIHR GHR Programmes with a contract end date after 31 December 2026.

NIHR GHR Academy Members (early career researchers), from your programme, can be co-applicants on the application.

NIHR GHR Academy Members, training leads or NIHR GHR programme directors, from a different GHR programme, can be collaborators on the application.

To apply you must:

  • complete the GHR CADA activities before the soonest option:
    • 28 February 2027
    • 2 months before your NIHR GHR Programme contract ends
  • agree to submit a short report 2 months after completing your NIHR GHR CADA activities
  • have the support of your NIHR GHR programme’s lead institution

Official Development Assistance (ODA eligibility)

This award is ODA-funded. Therefore, all activities should support the career development of NIHR GHR Academy Members (particularly those in LMICs) and ultimately benefit patients and the public in countries on the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s Development Assistance Committee (DAC) List of ODA Recipients (OECD DAC list).

Collaboration

Training leads can collaborate with a training lead or NIHR GHR Academy Member from different GHR programmes on a shared application. Your proposed tailored programme of activities for your cohorts must align. Review the list of NIHR Global Health Research programmes.

The GHR training programme placement and collaboration guide will continue to be updated as we receive information from NIHR GHR Programmes. Where available, the website has been added to awards. Please use our funding and awards website to find out more information about programme awards you are interested in.

You can also collaborate with a researcher or research team in one of programme awards’ lead institutions or any of the associated official collaborating institutions.

To collaborate with an official collaborating institution, before submitting an application you should:

  • contact the training leads or programme directors for more details on the partner institutions
  • contact NIHR to confirm the institution you chose is an official collaborating institution
