The NIHR Global Health Research Professorships award is a professorial-level funding opportunity. You can apply if you are an outstanding academic who is on track to become a future Global Health research leader. The award promotes effective translation of research.
It strengthens research leadership at the highest academic level for global health researchers from the UK and Official Development Assistance (ODA) eligible countries in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.

This award is for researchers close to professorial level or who have recently been appointed as a full professor. We expect that you would not have been employed at the professor level for more than 5 years as of September 2025. We welcome applications from different professional backgrounds, clinical and non-clinical.
What is available through a Global Health Research Professorship?
This award will fund up to £2,000,000 over 5 years to undertake a research project, cover salary costs, training and development, and institutional capacity strengthening in LMICs. Your proposed research project must be within our Global Health Research remit for career development awards.
Your application must focus on addressing global health security threats and challenges, improving the ability of health systems to protect the health of the poorest and most vulnerable in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. This, includes maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health.
Your proposed research should aim to produce scalable, solution focussed evidence to support regional or broader impact.
A portion of your award funding should contribute to long-term, sustainable research capacity strengthening in the LMIC contracting or partner institution named in your application.
