Our Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Programme funds research that assesses the impact of healthcare treatments, tests and other interventions, where there is already some evidence that they can be effective. The aim of this research is to provide additional evidence for these new technologies to potentially become standard care. This can then be used to inform clinicians, practitioners, policy makers and the public.

What is health technology assessment? For the HTA Programme, this is research on any health or social care intervention used to:

  • promote health
  • prevent, diagnose or treat disease
  • improve rehabilitation, quality of life or long-term care

HTA research establishes the clinical and cost-effectiveness of a health intervention or social care intervention. It then compares proposed interventions to current best alternative(s). This benefits patients, social care users, clinical and social care practice, the NHS and social care policy. It also benefits decision makers across these areas.
