Brighton and Sussex Medical School is recruiting a part-time Research Assistant to collect and analyse ultralow field MRI data for an Alzheimer’s Research UK-funded study testing whether MRI scans of this kind can be used to diagnose dementia.


Hours: Part time, considered up to a maximum of 0.5 FTE

Contract Type: 12 months

Expected start date: October 2026

About the role

The Clinical Sciences Imaging Centre (CISC) at the University of Sussex (Brighton, UK) is seeking a research assistant for a period of 12 months with possible extension for up to 6 months.

The research focus is on:

  1. Collecting and performing basic structural analysis of ultralow field MRI (ULF MRI) data for an Alzheimer’s Research UK (ARUK) funded study aimed at evaluating the clinical viability of ULF MRI data for dementia diagnosis.
  2. Analysing questionnaire data collected from patients scanned on both high field and ultralow field scanners at CISC, to evaluate the level of clinical readiness and patient experience on the newly introduced ultralow field MRI scanner.

The research assistant will assist with other activities related to the project, including but not limited to:

  • Participate in planning, designing, and conducting the scanning experiments.
  • Liaise with clinicians and staff at the Sussex Partnership Foundation Trust (SPFT) for enabling and promoting patient recruitment.
  • Liaise with the partner organization in the project (Kent and Medway Medical School) for coordination of scanning protocols and centralized data collection.
  • Liaise with the neuroradiologists in charge of clinical evaluation of the ensuing imaging data.
  • Participating in conferences and other research dissemination events.

The candidate should have excellent time management capabilities and communication skills. Experience with work with imaging data, and in particular with ultralow field MRI data is highly desirable. Basic background in MR physics and neuroscience is desirable. Good knowledge of Matlab or Python is a strong advantage. Ability to collaborate with others is a must.
